Claims
- 1. A charge-mode analog to digital converter comprising:
- a signal charge input adapted for input of a signal charge;
- a charge channel coupled to the signal charge input having a plurality of serially coupled charge wells;
- a reference channel having a plurality of serially coupled charge wells;
- charge injection means for selectively injecting predetermined charges including a reference charge into the reference channel;
- comparator means coupled to the charge channel and the reference channel for sensing the signal charge and the reference charge, and for comparing the signal charge to the reference charge to generate control signals, responsive thereto; and
- a digital channel for generating a digital word responsive to the control signals wherein the digital word further includes digital bits such that each digital bit corresponds to an analog to digital conversion stage.
- 2. The analog to digital converter of claim 1 further comprising:
- reference channel switch means for conditionally adding a selected charge to the reference charge responsive to the control signals; and
- digital channel switch means for conditionally adding a selected charge to the digital charge responsive to the control signals.
- 3. The analog to digital converter of claim 2 wherein the selected charge added to the reference charge for a first analog to digital conversion stage is equal to a most significant bit charge and the selected charge added to the reference charge for a subsequent analog to digital conversion stage is equal to one half of the charge added to the first analog to digital conversion stage.
- 4. The analog to digital converter to claim 2 wherein the selected charge added to the digital charge is equal to the charge of a most significant bit.
- 5. A differential symmetric charge-mode analog to digital converter comprising:
- means configured in stages for carrying first and second substantially equivalent and independent streams of reference charges and signal charges sequentially from stage to stage;
- comparator means for simultaneously comparing the signal charge to the reference charge from the first independent stream and the reference charge to the signal charge from the second independent stream for each stage and for generating control signals in response thereto;
- control means for controlling conditional addition of a selected charge to the signal charge at each stage and in each independent stream responsive to the control signals;
- means for generating a digital word representative of the signal charge responsive to the control signals.
- 6. The analog to digital converter of claim 5 wherein the control means for controlling conditional addition of a selected charge to the signal charge further comprises:
- charge splitter means for selecting a fractional charge.
- 7. The analog to digital converter of claim 6 wherein the charge splitter means selectively splits an input charge in half for selective transmission to a subsequent stage.
- 8. The analog to digital converter of claim 5 wherein the means for carrying first and second substantially equivalent and independent streams of reference charges and signal charges further comprises two parallel series of charge wells, and wherein each signal and reference charge is stored substantially identically in adjacent charge wells as a leading and trailing charge such that the trailing charge is utilized by the comparator means and the control means.
