Claims
- 1. A check valve assembly for permitting unrestricted flow in one direction and limited flow in the reverse direction comprising:
- (a) a valve body having a longitudinal flowbore comprising first and third concentric sections connected by a second concentric section of restricted diameter;
- (b) seat means carried by said valve body at one end of said third flowbore section;
- (c) recess means in said valve body communicating with said flowbore near the junction of said second and third flowbore sections;
- (d) ball closure means carried in said recess means out of said flowbore but movable into said flowbore for sealing engagement with said seat means, in response to a predetermined rate of reverse flow through said check valve assembly, to block reverse flow of fluids through said check valve assembly;
- (e) equalizing passage means in said valve body providing fluid communication between said recess means and said first flowbore section; and
- (f) tubular sleeve means mounted in said first flowbore section for limited movement from a first position downstream of said second flowbore section to a second position immediately adjacent said second flowbore section in response to reverse flow of fluid through said check valve means above said predetermined rate.
- 2. A check valve assembly as set forth in claim 1 comprising an outer sleeve member surrounding said valve body and retained thereon by retainer means, said outer sleeve member being removable on removal of said retainer means to permit access to said recess means.
- 3. A check valve assembly as set forth in claim 1 in which said valve body has a cylindrical exterior of substantially uniform diameter throughout its length.
- 4. A check valve assembly as set forth in claim 1 in which said recess means is a cylindrical hole of a diameter slightly larger than the diameter of said ball closure member and whose axis intersects the axis of said flowbore at an inclined angle so that said cylindrical hole is inclined toward said third flowbore section.
- 5. A drill string assembly comprising a drill bit connected to the lower end of a string of drill pipe and check valve means connected in said drill pipe above said drill bit, said check valve means comprising:
- (a) a valve body having a longitudinal flowbore therethrough, said flowbore having a lower section, an intermediate section of restricted diameter and an upper section of a diameter greater than said intermediate section;
- (b) seat means carried by said valve body adjacent said upper flowbore section;
- (c) recess means in said valve body communicating with said flowbore near the upper end of said intermediate section;
- (d) ball closure means normally carried in said recess means out of said flowbore but movable from said recess means into said upper flowbore section in response to upward flow of fluids through said check valve means above a predetermined rate to sealingly engage said seat means, blocking upward flow of fluids through said drill string assembly; and
- (e) tubular sleeve means mounted in said lower flowbore section for limited movement from a first position below said intermediate section to a second position immediately adjacent said intermediate section in response to upward flow of fluid through said check valve means above said predetermined rate.
- 6. A drill string assembly as set forth in claim 5 in which said seat means is removably mounted in said valve body, allowing replacement thereof through said flowbore.
- 7. A drill string assembly as set forth in claim 5 in which said valve body has a reduced outside diameter portion around which is carried a removable outer sleeve member, removal of said outer sleeve member permitting access to said recess means from the exterior of said check valve means.
- 8. A drill string assembly as set forth in claim 7 in which said check valve assembly further comprises collar means threadedly attached to said valve body for maintaining said outer sleeve member on said valve body.
- 9. A drill string assembly as set forth in claim 8 in which said valve body, outer sleeve member and collar means are joined together so as to present a substantially uniform external cylindrical surface.
- 10. A drill string assembly as set forth in claim 5 in which the outside diameter of said check valve means is no greater than the largest outside diameter of said string of drill pipe.
- 11. A drill string assembly as set forth in claim 5 in which said valve recess means communicates with said lower flowbore section through a pressure equalizing passage in said valve body.
