Claims
- 1. A method of generating a gas comprising the steps of: disposing within a casing a material which produces the gas when supplied with heat for initiating decomposition thereof; burning a pyrotechnic material; supplying heat from burning of the pyrotechnic material to the gas producing material for initiating decomposition thereof; providing a gas impervious barrier for segregating from the produced gas all gases evolved from burning of the pyrotechnic material; and removing the produced gas, free of gases evolved from burning of the pyrotechnic material, from the casing.
- 2. A method according to claim 1 further comprising venting the evolved gases.
- 3. A method according to claim 1 further comprising venting the evolved gases to atmosphere.
- 4. A method of generating a gas comprising the steps of: disposing within a casing a material which produces the gas when supplied with heat for initiating decomposition thereof; disposing a pyrotechnic material within a container which is composed of material which is thermally conductive and impervious to gases which are evolved during burning of the pyrotechnic material; disposing the container in heat transfer relation with the gas producing material for transfer of heat from burning of the pyrotechnic material within the container directly to the gas producing material for initiation of decomposition thereof; burning the pyrotechnic material; segregating from the produced gas the gases evolved from burning of the pyrotechnic material; and removing the produced gas, free of gases evolved from burning of the pyrotechnic material, from the casing.
- 5. A method according to claim 4 further comprising venting the evolved gases.
- 6. A method according to claim 4 further comprising venting the evolved gases to atmosphere.
- 7. A method of generating a gas comprising the steps of: disposing within a casing a material which produces the gas when supplied with heat for initiating decomposition thereof; burning a pyrotechnic material to generate heat for initiation of decomposition of the gas producing material; providing a gas impervious barrier for segregating the pyrotechnic material and gases evolved from burning thereof from the gas producing material and the produced gas; venting the evolved gases from the burning of the pyrotechnic material; and removing the produced gas, free of gases evolved from burning of the pyrotechnic material, from the casing.
- 8. A method of generating oxygen comprising the steps of: disposing within a casing a material which produces oxygen when supplied with heat for initiating decomposition thereof; disposing within the casing a container for a pyrotechnic material which container has a first portion which is composed of a first material which is impervious to gases which evolve from burning of the pyrotechnic material and which has a second portion which is composed of a second material which is impervious to the evolved gases for restricting heat transfer to the casing; applying heat from burning of the pyrotechnic material through the first portion of the container to the oxygen producing material for initiating decomposition thereof; segregating from the produced oxygen the gases evolved from burning of the pyrotechnic material; and removing the produced oxygen, free of gases evolved from burning of the pyrotechnic material, from the casing.
- 9. A method according to claim 8 further comprising providing the first portion to have a mass to hold the heat from burning of the pyrotechnic material in heat transfer relation with the oxygen producing material for a period of time to effect initiation of decomposition thereof.
- 10. A method according to claim 8 further comprising venting the evolved gases.
- 11. A method of generating oxygen comprising the steps of: disposing within a casing a material which produces oxygen when supplied with heat for initiating decomposition thereof; burning a pyrotechnic material; supplying heat from burning of the pyrotechnic material through a mass of material to the oxygen producing material for initiation of decomposition thereof; holding the heat from burning of the pyrotechnic material in the mass of material in heat transfer relation with the oxygen producing material for a period of time to effect initiation of decomposition thereof; providing a gas impervious barrier for segregating from the produced oxygen gases evolved from burning of the pyrotechnic material; and removing the produced oxygen, free of gases evolved from burning of the pyrotechnic material, from the casing.
- 12. A method according to claim 11 further comprising disposing the pyrotechnic material in a container for burning thereof, and selecting the container to have a first portion comprising the mass of material and a second portion composed of a material for restricting heat transfer to the casing.
- 13. A method according to claim 11 further comprising venting the evolved gases.
- 14. A method of generating oxygen comprising the steps of: disposing within a casing a material which produces oxygen when supplied with heat for initiating decomposition thereof; disposing pyrotechnic material in a container for burning thereof and selecting the container to have a first portion comprising the mass of material and a second portion composed of a material for restricting heat transfer to the casing; burning the pyrotechnic material; supplying heat from burning of the pyrotechnic material through a mass of material to the oxygen producing material for initiation of decomposition thereof; holding the heat from burning of the pyrotechnic material in the mass of material in heat transfer relation with the oxygen producing material for a period of time to effect initiation of decomposition thereof; segregating from the produced oxygen gases evolved from burning of the pyrotechnic material; and removing the produced oxygen, free of gases evolved from burning of the pyrotechnic material, from the casing.
