Claims
- 1. A carbon article having at least a portion of its surface chemically bonded to aluminum via a metal carbide interfacial bond, said metal being selected from the group consisting of tantalum, titanium and hafnium, said metal carbide having been formed in situ in the presence of said aluminum and with the formation of aluminum carbide substantially prevented.
- 2. The carbon article of claim 1 being a graphite electrode and having an interfacial bond thickness of about 0.0001 inch and an aluminum thickness of about 0.02 inch.
- 3. The carbon article of claim 1 wherein said metal is tantalum; and wherein nickel is present in the aluminum in an amount between about 1% and 15% of the weight of the aluminum.
