Claims
- 1. A process for making a composite material wherein carbon, in a form selected from the group consisting of granules and fibers, is distributed in an aluminum matrix via an interfacial bond of tantalum carbide, comprising the following steps:
- (a) preparing a preform pellet of aluminum, tantalum, and carbon in an atomic weight proportion being approximately within the trapezoidal areas identified as c-d-e-f of the ternary constitution diagram of the aluminum-tantalum-carbon system shown in FIG. 1 of the drawings; and
- (b) heating said preform pellet in an inert atmosphere at a temperature between about 850.degree. C. and about 1470.degree. C. for a time period sufficient to form an interface of tantalum carbide between the carbon and aluminum with the aluminum acting as a matrix for the carbon.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein in step (a) the preform pellets is composed of 10 grams of Al.sub.3 Ta powder and between about 0.66 and about 4.24 grams of graphite powder.
- 3. A process for making a composite material wherein carbon, in a form selected from the group consisting of granules and fibers, is distributed in an aluminum matrix via an interfacial bond of titanium carbide, comprising:
- (a) preparing a preform pellet of aluminum, titanium and carbon in an atomic weight proportion being approximately within the trapezoidal area identified as c-d-e-f of the ternary construction diagram of the aluminum-titanium-carbon system shown in FIG. 2 of the drawings; and
- (b) heating said preform pellet in an inert atmosphere at a temperature between about 880.degree. C. and about 1340.degree. C. for a time period sufficient to form an interface of titanium carbide between the carbon and aluminum with the aluminum acting as a matrix for the carbon.
- 4. A process for making a composite material wherein carbon is distributed in an aluminum matrix via an interfacial bond of a metal carbide, said metal selected from the group consisting of tantalum, titanium and hafnium, the process comprising:
- (a) preparing a mixture of carbon and a compound selected from the group consisting of Al.sub.3 Ta, Al.sub.3 Ti and Al.sub.3 Hf;
- (b) reacting said mixture at a temperature at which said metal is soluble in the aluminum for a time period sufficient to release the aluminum and form said metal carbide interface between the carbon and the aluminum; and
- (c) densifying said mixture at a temperature of about the melting temperature of aluminum.
- 5. A process as defined in claim 4 wherein said carbon is graphite.
- 6. A process as defined in claim 4 wherein said carbon is present in a form selected from the group consisting of granules and fibers.
- 7. A process as defined in claim 5 wherein said graphite is present in a form selected from the group consisting of granules and fibers.
