Claims
- 1. A child car seat comprising
- a seat shell including a bottom seat portion, a back-support portion, a left side wall adjacent to one side of the bottom seat portion, and a right side wall adjacent to an opposite side of the bottom seat portion,
- a barrier shield having a first end adjacent the left side wall and a second end adjacent the right side wall,
- support means movably attached to the seat shell and pivotably attached to the barrier shield for supporting the barrier shield above the bottom seat portion and to provide for pivoting movement of the barrier shield about a horizontal pivot axis extending through the barrier shield between an initial position and a child-restraining position, the support means including means for engaging the left and right side walls of the seat shell during pivoting movement of the barrier shield, and
- a child-restraining harness assembly having a first portion coupled to the back-support portion of the seat shell, a second portion coupled to the barrier shield, and the first portion is coupled to the second portion to form a continuous harness extending between the back-support portion of the seat shell and the barrier shield.
- 2. The child car seat of claim 1, wherein the back-support portion of the seat shell includes an aperture receiving the first portion of the child-restraining harness assembly and the second portion of the child-restraining harness assembly includes a crotch strap having a first end anchored to the barrier shield and a movable second end that is spaced apart a fixed distance from the aperture so that movement of the second end causes the barrier shield to pivot.
- 3. A child car seat comprising
- a seat shell including a bottom seat portion, a back-support portion, a left side wall adjacent to one side of the bottom seat portion, and a right side wall adjacent to an opposite side of the bottom seat portion,
- a barrier shield,
- support means movably attached to the seat shell and pivotably attached to the barrier shield for supporting the barrier shield above the bottom seat portion and to provide for pivoting movement of the barrier shield about a horizontal pivot axis extending through the barrier shield between an initial position and a child-restraining position, the support means including means for engaging the left and right side walls of the seat shell during pivoting movement of the barrier shield, and
- a child-restraining harness assembly coupled to the seat shell and the barrier shield, the child-restraining harness including left and right shoulder straps that are fixed relative to the back-support portion and a crotch strap that has a first end anchored to the barrier shield and a second end fixed to the left and right shoulder straps.
- 4. A child car seat for restraining a child seated in the car seat, the child car seat comprising
- a seat shell including a bottom seat portion having a back edge and opposite sides extending from the back edge, a back-support portion appended to the back edge and extending upwardly therefrom, and side walls extending from the back edge adjacent the opposite sides of the seat portion,
- an axle,
- means for mounting the axle to the seat shell, the mounting means being movable relative to the seat shell about a rear horizontal axis so that the axle can be positioned to lie both in a first position in front of the back-support portion above the seat portion in a horizontal orientation defining a front horizontal axis, and in a second position away from the first position, the mounting means including a first portion and a second portion being positioned to lie over the opposite sides of the seat portion and supported by the opposite side walls when the axle is in the first position, and
- a barrier shield pivotably mounted to the axle for pivoting movement about the front horizontal axis relative to the axle, the barrier shield being coupled to the first and second portions and positioned to lie between the first and second side walls of the seat shell.
- 5. A child car seat for restraining a child seated in the car seat, the child car seat comprising
- a seat shell formed to include a seat portion having a back edge and a back-support portion appended to the back edge and extending upwardly therefrom,
- an axle,
- means for mounting the axle to the seat shell, the mounting means being movable relative to the seat shell so that the axle can be positioned to lie both in a first position in front of the back-support portion above the seat portion in a horizontal orientation defining a horizontal axis, and in a second position away from the first position, and
- a barrier shield pivotably mounted to the axle for pivoting movement about the horizontal axis relative to the axle, the barrier shield including a top shell coupled to a bottom shell to define an interior region therebetween and the axle extending through the interior region.
- 6. The child car seat of claim 5, wherein a spring having a first end and a second end is received within the interior region, the first end of the spring is fixed relative to the axle, and the second end of the spring is fixed to the bottom shell so that the spring biases the barrier shield toward the initial position.
- 7. A child car seat for restraining a child seated in the car seat, the child car seat comprising
- a seat shell formed to include a seat portion having a back edge and a back-support portion appended to the back edge and extending upwardly therefrom,
- an axle,
- means for mounting the axle to the seat shell, the mounting means being movable relative to the seat shell so that the axle can be positioned to lie both in a first position in front of the back support portion above the seat portion in a horizontal orientation defining a horizontal axis, and in a second position away from the first position,
- a barrier shield pivotably mounted to the axle for pivoting movement about the horizontal axis relative to the axle, the barrier shield including a top shell coupled to a bottom shell to define an interior region therebetween and the axle extends through the interior region,
- a spring received within the interior region, the spring having a first end and a second end, the first end of the spring being fixed relative to the axle, and the second end of the spring being fixed to the bottom shell so that the spring biases the barrier shield toward the initial position, and
- a crotch strap having a first end anchored to the bottom shell adjacent to the second end of the spring.
- 8. A child car seat for restraining a child seated in the car seat, the child car seat comprising
- a seat shell formed to include a seat portion having a back edge and a back-support portion appended to the back edge and extending upwardly therefrom,
- an axle,
- means for mounting the axle to the seat shell, the mounting means being movable relative to the seat shell so that the axle can be positioned to lie in front of the back-support portion and above the seat portion in a horizontal orientation to define a horizontal axis,
- a barrier shield pivotably mounted to the axle for pivoting movement about the horizontal axis relative to the axle, and
- means appended to the seat shell and the barrier shield for pivoting the barrier shield downwardly about the horizontal axis to restrain forward movement of the child seated in the seat shell away from the back-support portion and under the barrier shield in response to movement of the child in a direction away from the back-support portion, the pivoting means including a first portion slidably coupled to the seat portion of the seat shell and a second portion coupled to both the first portion and to the back support portion.
- 9. A child car seat for restraining a child seated in the car seat, the child car seat comprising
- a seat shell formed to include a seat portion having a back edge and a back-support portion appended to the back edge and extending upwardly therefrom,
- an axle,
- means for mounting the axle to the seat shell, the mounting means being movable relative to the seat shell so that the axle can be positioned to lie in front of the back-support portion and above the seat portion in a horizontal orientation to define a horizontal axis,
- a barrier shield pivotably mounted to the axle for pivoting movement about the horizontal axis relative to the axle, and
- means appended to the seat shell and the barrier shield for pivoting the barrier shield downwardly about the horizontal axis to restrain forward movement of the child seated in the seat shell away from the back-support portion and under the barrier shield in response to movement of the child in a direction away from the back-support portion, the pivoting means being coupled to the back-support portion of the seat shell.
- 10. A child car seat for restraining a child seated in the car seat, the child car seat comprising
- a seat shell formed to include a seat portion having a back edge and a back-support portion appended to the back edge and extending upwardly therefrom,
- an axle,
- means for mounting the axle to the seat shell, the mounting means being movable relative to the seat shell so that the axle can be positioned to lie in front of the back-support portion and above the seat portion in a horizontal orientation to define a horizontal axis,
- a barrier shield pivotably mounted to the axle for pivoting movement about the horizontal axis relative to the axle, and
- means appended to the seat shell and the barrier shield for pivoting the barrier shield downwardly about the horizontal axis to restrain forward movement of the child seated in the seat shell away from the back-support portion and under the barrier shield in response to movement of the child in a direction away from the back-support portion, the pivoting means pivoting the barrier shield toward the seat portion in response to the movement of the child away from the back-support portion.
- 11. A child seat comprising
- a seat shell including an upwardly-facing bottom seat portion and a back-support portion extending upwardly from the seat portion,
- an axle movably coupled to the seat shell and positionable above the bottom seat portion,
- a barrier shield mounted to the axle for pivoting movement between an initial position spaced apart from the bottom seat portion a first distance and a child-restraining position spaced apart from the bottom seat portion a second distance which is less than the first distance, the barrier shield including a bottom portion having a downwardly-facing bottom surface, and
- a child-restraining harness assembly extending from the back-support portion of the seat shell to the downwardly-facing bottom surface of the barrier shield, the child-restraining harness having an end that anchors to the bottom portion of the barrier shield.
- 12. The child seat of claim 11, wherein the bottom portion of the barrier shield is a bottom shell, the barrier shield includes a top shell cooperating with the bottom shell to form a hollow interior region therebetween, the bottom shell is formed to include an aperture, and the child-restraining harness assembly includes an end extending through the aperture into the interior region of the barrier shield.
- 13. The child seat of claim 11, wherein the child-restraining harness assembly extends from the back-support portion to the barrier shield through a buckle coupled to the bottom seat portion.
- 14. The child seat of claim 11, wherein the barrier shield includes a rear wall spaced apart from the back-support portion and a front wall spaced apart from the rear wall, the axle is spaced apart from the front wall and the rear wall, and the child-restraining harness assembly is spaced apart from the front wall and the rear wall.
- 15. The child seat of claim 14, wherein the barrier shield includes an upwardly-facing top surface spaced apart above the bottom surface of the barrier shield and the child-restraining harness assembly is spaced apart from the top surface of the barrier shield.
- 16. The child seat of claim 14, wherein an end of the child-restraining harness assembly is anchored to the barrier shield between the axle and the rear wall.
- 17. The child seat of claim 11, wherein the axle extends in a transverse direction and the child-restraining harness assembly includes a portion slidably coupled to the seat portion of the seat shell beneath the bottom surface of the barrier shield and between the axle and the back support portion of the seat shell.
- 18. A child seat comprising
- a seat shell including an upwardly-facing bottom seat portion,
- an axle movably coupled to the seat shell and positionable above the bottom seat portion,
- a barrier shield mounted to the axle for pivoting movement between an initial position spaced apart from the bottom seat portion a first distance and a child-restraining position spaced apart from the bottom seat portion a second distance which is less than the first distance, the barrier shield including a top shell cooperating with a bottom shell to form a hollow interior region therebetween, and
- a spring having a first end and a second end, the spring being received within the interior region, the first end of the spring being fixed relative to the axle, and the second end of the spring being fixed to the bottom shell so that the spring biases the barrier shield toward the initial position.
- 19. A child seat comprising
- a seat shell including an upwardly-facing bottom seat portion and a back support portion,
- an axle movably coupled to the seat shell and positionable above the bottom seat portion,
- a barrier shield mounted to the axle for pivoting movement between an initial position spaced apart from the bottom seat portion a first distance and a child-restraining position spaced apart from the bottom seat portion a second distance which is less than the first distance, and
- a child-restraining harness assembly being coupled to the back support portion and being coupled to the barrier shield, the child-restraining harness assembly including left and right shoulder straps fixed to the seat shell, a connecting device connecting the left shoulder strap to the right shoulder strap, and a crotch strap having a first end anchored to the connecting device and a second end anchored to the barrier shield.
- 20. A child car seat comprising
- a seat shell including a bottom seat portion having a first edge and an opposite second edge and a back-support portion extending upwardly from the bottom seat portion between the first and second edges,
- a barrier shield including a first end positioned to lie adjacent to the first edge and an opposite second end positioned to lie adjacent to the second edge, the barrier shield being supported above the bottom seat portion to lie in spaced-apart relation with the back-support portion, the barrier shield being pivotable between an initial position and a child-restraining position about a horizontal axis positioned to extend between the first and second ends, and
- a flexible child-restraining belt including a first flexible belt portion coupled to the back-support portion of the seat shell and a second flexible belt portion coupled to the first flexible belt portion and the barrier shield.
- 21. A child car seat comprising
- a seat shell including a bottom seat portion having a first edge and an opposite second edge and a back-support portion extending upwardly from the bottom seat portion between the first and second edges,
- a barrier shield including a first end positioned to lie adjacent to the first edge and an opposite second end positioned to lie adjacent to the second edge, the barrier shield being supported above the bottom seat portion to lie in spaced-apart relation with the back-support portion, the barrier shield being pivotable between an initial position and a child-restraining position about a horizontal axis positioned to extend between the first and second ends, and
- a child-restraining harness assembly including a first portion coupled to the back-support portion of the seat shell and a second portion coupled to the first portion and the barrier shield and slidably coupled to the bottom seat portion of the seat shell.
- 22. The child car seat of claim 21, wherein the second portion of the child-restraining harness assembly is slidably coupled to the bottom seat portion of the seat shell by a buckle having a slot through which the second portion of the child-restraining harness assembly extends.
- 23. The child car seat of claim 22, wherein the seat shell includes a buckle case and a latch received in the buckle case, the latch is movable between a locking position in which the latch engages the buckle to couple the buckle to the seat shell and a releasing position in which the latch is disengaged from the buckle so that the buckle is decoupled from the seat shell.
- 24. A child car seat comprising
- a seat shell including a bottom seat portion having a first edge and an opposite second edge and a back-support portion extending upwardly from the bottom seat portion between the first and second edges,
- a barrier shield including a first end positioned to lie adjacent to the first edge and an opposite second end positioned to lie adjacent to the second edge, the barrier shield being supported above the bottom seat portion to lie in spaced-apart relation with the back-support portion, the barrier shield being pivotable between an initial position and a child-restraining position about a horizontal axis positioned to extend between the first and second ends,
- a U-shaped arm unit coupled to the back-support portion and wherein the barrier shield is pivotably connected to the U-shaped arm unit, and
- a child-restraining harness assembly including a first portion coupled to the back-support portion of the seat shell and a second portion coupled to the first portion and the barrier shield.
- 25. The child car seat of claim 24, wherein the seat shell includes a left side wall extending from the first edge and a right side wall extending from the second edge, the left and right side walls are arranged in spaced-apart relation to position the bottom seat portion therebetween, and the U-shaped arm unit is positioned to engage the left and right side walls during pivoting movement of the barrier shield.
- 26. A child car seat comprising
- a seat shell including a bottom seat portion having a first edge and an opposite second edge and a back-support portion extending upwardly from the bottom seat portion between the first and second edges,
- a barrier shield including a first end positioned to lie adjacent to the first edge and an opposite second end positioned to lie adjacent to the second edge, the barrier shield being supported above the bottom seat portion to lie in spaced-apart relation with the back-support portion, the barrier shield being pivotable between an initial position and a child-restraining position about a horizontal axis positioned to extend between the first and second ends,
- a U-shaped arm unit having a left swing arm pivotably coupled to the back support portion, a right swing arm pivotably coupled to the back-support portion, and an axle arm arranged to interconnect the left and right swing arms, and wherein the barrier shield is pivotably coupled to the axle arm and positioned to lie between the left and right swing arms, and
- a child-restraining harness assembly including a first portion coupled to the back-support portion of the seat shell and a second portion coupled to the first portion and the barrier shield.
- 27. The child car seat of claim 26, wherein the barrier shield includes a top shell and a bottom shell coupled to the top shell to define an interior region therebetween and the axle arm extends through the interior region.
