Claims
- 1. A process for preparing a chlorinated ethylene-alpha olefin-nonconjugated diolefin terpolymer characterized by a superior stability on storage or exposure to elevated temperatures and containing from about 0.5 to about 14 weight percent chlorine substituted in the allylic position wherein the base ethylene-alpha olefin-nonconjugated diolefin terpolymer comprises:
- (i) about 40 to 80 mol percent ethylene,
- (ii) about 20 to 60 mol percent of a C.sub.3 to C.sub.8 alpha olefin, and
- (iii) about 0.5 to 10 mol percent of a C.sub.7 to C.sub.16 nonconjugated diolefin wherein one olefinic bond is monosubstituted and terminal and the other olefinic bond is trisubstituted, which comprises the steps of:
- (A) forming a solution of said base ethylene-alpha olefin-nonconjugated diolefin terpolymer in an inert organic solvent wherein there is dispersed from about 0 to 10 percent by volume per volume of inert organic solvent of water,
- (B) adding to said terpolymer solution molecular chlorine in a quantity sufficient to achieve the desired level of chlorination,
- (C) subjecting the resulting solution to a temperature of from about 0.degree. C. to 50.degree. C. in the absence or near absence of light, whereby said ethylene-alpha olefin-nonconjugated diolefin terpolymer becomes chlorinated, adding
- (D) an alkaline solution to the solution of the chlorinated ethylene-alpha olefin-nonconjugated diolefin terpolymer sufficient to neutralize said solution, and
- (E) recovering from the solution the chlorinated ethylene-alpha olefin-nonconjugated diolefin terpolymer.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein said molecular chlorine is dissolved in an organic solvent selected from chloroform and carbon tetrachloride.
- 3. The process of claim 1 wherein said temperature is from about 15.degree. C. to about 35.degree. C.
- 4. The process of claim 3 wherein said inert organic solvent is selected from the group consisting of C.sub.6 to C.sub.7 saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons, C.sub.7 and C.sub.8 aromatic hydrocarbons, C.sub.6 and C.sub.7 alicyclic hydrocarbons and C.sub.1 halogenated hydrocarbons.
- 5. The process of claim 4 wherein said inert organic solvent is selected from the group consisting of hexane, cyclohexane, chloroform and carbon tetrachloride.
- 6. The process of claim 5 wherein said C.sub.3 to C.sub.8 alpha olefin is propylene.
- 7. The process of claim 6 wherein said C.sub.7 to C.sub.16 nonconjugated diolefin is selected from the group consisting of 3,7-dimethyl-1,6-octadiene, 5,7-dimethyl-1,6-octadiene, 7-methyl-1,6-octadiene, 5-methyl-1,4-hexadiene and 6-methyl-1,5-heptadiene.
- 8. A process for preparing a chlorinated ethylene-propylene nonconjugated diolefin terpolymer characterized by a superior stability on storage or exposure to elevated temperatures and containing from about 0.5 to about 14 weight percent chlorine substituted in the allylic position wherein the base ethylene-propylene-nonconjugated diolefin terpolymer comprises:
- (i) about 40 to 80 mol percent ethylene,
- (ii) about 20 to 60 mol percent of a C.sub.3 to C.sub.8 alpha olefin, and
- (iii) about 0.5 to 10 mol percent of a nonconjugated diolefin characterized in that it is an acyclic nonconjugated diolefin wherein one olefinic bond is monosubstituted and terminal and the other olefinic bond is trisubstituted, which comprises the steps of:
- (A) forming a solution of said base ethylene-alpha olefin-nonconjugated diolefin terpolymer in an inert organic solvent,
- (B) adding to said terpolymer solution a chlorinating agent selected from the group of N-chloroamides in a quantity sufficient to achieve the desired level of chlorination,
- (C) subjecting the resulting solution to a temperature of from about 15.degree. C. to about 35.degree. C. in the absence or near absence of light, whereby said ethylene-alpha olefin-nonconjugated diolefin terpolymer becomes chlorinated, and
- (D) recovering from the solution the chlorinated ethylene-alpha olefin-nonconjugated diolefin terpolymer.
- 9. The process of claim 8 wherein said inert organic solvent is selected from the group consisting of dichloromethane, chloroform and carbon tetrachloride.
- 10. The process of claim 8 wherein said chlorinating agent is 1,3-dichloro-5,5-dimethyl hydantoin.
- 11. The process of claim 10 wherein said C.sub.3 to C.sub.8 alpha olefin is propylene.
