Claims
- 1. A compound of structural formula (I): ##STR27## or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof wherein a is 0 or 1;
- A is --C(O)--, --NR.sup.3 --C(O)--, or --OC(O)--;
- R.sup.1 is selected from the group consisting of:
- (1) C.sub.1-20 alkyl,
- (2) substituted C.sub.1-20 alkyl in which one or more of the carbons atoms is substituted with X.sup.3 ;
- (3) C.sub.1-20 alkyl wherein one or more of the carbons is replaced by --NR.sup.3 --, --O--, or --S(O).sub.n --;
- (4) substituted C.sub.1-20 alkyl wherein one or more of the carbons is replaced by --NR.sup.3 --, --O-- or --S(O).sub.n -- and wherein one or more of the carbon atoms is substituted with X.sup.3 ;
- (5) aryl substituted with X and Y;
- (6) heteroaryl substituted with X and Y;
- (7) C.sub.2-20 alkenyl wherein alkenyl contains one or more double bonds;
- (8) substituted C.sub.2-20 alkenyl wherein alkenyl contains one or more double bonds and wherein one or more of the carbons is substituted with X.sup.3 ;
- (9) C.sub.2-20 alkenyl wherein alkenyl contains one or more double bonds and one or more of the nonolefinic carbons is replaced by --NR.sup.3 --, --O-- or --S(O).sub.n --;
- (10) substituted C.sub.2-20 alkenyl wherein alkenyl contains one or more double bonds and one or more of the nonolefinic carbons is replaced by --NR.sup.3 --, --O-- or --S(O).sub.n -- and wherein one or more carbon atoms is substituted with X.sup.3 ;
- (11) C.sub.3-10 cycloalkyl; and
- (12) substituted C.sub.3-10 cycloalkyl in which one or more of the substituents is selected from:
- (a) halogen,

- (c) R.sup.3 R.sup.3 N--,

- (4) substituted C.sub.1-20 alkyl wherein one or more of the carbons is replaced by --NR.sup.3 --, --O--, or --S(O).sub.n -- and wherein one or more of the carbons is substituted with X.sup.3 ;
- (5) aryl substituted with X and Y;
- (6) heteroaryl substituted with X and Y;
- (7) C.sub.2-20 alkenyl wherein alkenyl contains one or more double bonds;
- (8) substituted C.sub.2-20 alkenyl wherein alkenyl contains one or more double bonds and wherein one or more of the carbons is substituted with X.sup.3 ;
- (9) C.sub.2-20 alkenyl wherein alkenyl contains one or more double bonds and one or more of the nonolefinic carbons

- (3) C.sub.1-20 alkyl wherein one or more of the carbons is replaced by --NR.sup.3 --, --O--, or --S(O).sub.n --;
- (4) substituted C.sub.1-20 alkyl wherein one or more of the carbons is replaced by --NR.sup.3 --, --O--, or --S(O).sub.n -- and wherein one or more of the carbon atoms is substituted with X.sup.3 ;
- (5) aryl substituted with X and Y;
- (6) heteroaryl substituted with X and Y;

- (b) HMG--CoA synthase inhibitor;
- (c) Squalene expoxidase inhibitor;
- (d) Probucol;
- (e) Niacin;
- (f) Gemfibrozil; and
- (g) Clofibrate. 12. The composition of claim 10 wherein the composition
- additionally comprises an HMG--CoA reductase inhibitor. 13. A composition of claim 11 wherein the HMG--CoA reductase inhibitor is selected from
- lovastatin, simvastatin, pravastatin and fluvastatin. 14. A method of treating hypercholesterolemia comprising the administration to a subject in need of such treatment a nontoxic therapeutically effective amount of
- the compound of claim 1. 15. A method of inhibiting squalene synthetase comprising the administration to a subject in need of such treatment a
- nontoxic therapeutically effective amount of a compound of claim 1. 16. A method of inhibiting fungal growth comprising applying to the area where growth is to be controlled an antifungally effective amount of a compound
