Claims
- 1. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver having a drive shaft, said chuck comprising:
a) a generally cylindrical body member having a nose section and a tail section, said tail section having an axial bore formed therein to mate with said drive shaft of said driver and said nose section having an axial bore formed therein and a plurality of angularly disposed passageways formed therethrough and intersecting said axial bore; b) a plurality of jaws slidably positioned in each of said angularly disposed passageways, each of said jaws having a jaw face formed on one side thereof and threads formed on the opposite side thereof; c) a nut disposed about said body member for rotational movement with respect to said body member, said nut in driving engagement with said threads on said jaws; d) a generally cylindrical front sleeve member overlying said nose section of said body member; and e) a generally cylindrical nut retainer member disposed about said body, said nut retainer member including a frusto-conical portion.
- 2. The chuck as in claim 1, including
a rust resistant nosepiece secured to said nose section of said body member, said nose piece maintaining said front sleeve member on said body member.
- 3. The chuck as in claim 2, wherein said body member includes a front transverse face, and wherein at least a portion of said nosepiece extends radially inward over at least a portion of said front transverse face of said body member.
- 4. The chuck as in claim 1, wherein said frustoconical portion includes a radially inward facing frustoconical portion.
- 5. The chuck as in claim 1, including
a thrust bearing ring disposed axially rearward of said nut.
- 6. The chuck as in claim 5, wherein said thrust bearing ring is formed integrally with said nut.
- 7. The chuck as in claim 5, including a bearing disposed axially rearward of said nut between said nut and said thrust bearing ring.
- 8. The chuck as in claim 7, wherein said bearing includes a plurality of rolling balls.
- 9. The chuck as in claim 1, wherein said nut retainer member includes a first axially extending substantially cylindrical portion and a second axially extending frusto-conical portion, said first portion adapted for receipt about a portion of said body nose section and said second portion configured to contact said nut for preventing movement of said nut on said body member in the axial direction towards said nut retainer member.
- 10. The chuck as in claim 9, wherein said nut retainer member is fixed against axial movement with respect to said body member.
- 11. The chuck as in claim 9, wherein said first axially extending substantially cylindrical portion of said nut retainer member is press-fit to said body member.
- 12. The chuck as in claim 1, wherein said front sleeve is rotatable with respect to said body member.
- 13. The chuck as in claim 12, wherein said front sleeve is in rotational driving engagement with said nut.
- 14. The chuck as in claim 1, wherein said nut retainer member maintains said nut on said body member.
- 15. The chuck as in claim 1, wherein said nut retainer member is fixed against movement in the axially forward direction with respect to said body member.
- 16. The chuck as in claim 1, including a rear sleeve rotationally fixed to said body member and extending axially forward and surrounding at least a portion of said body member tail section.
- 17. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver having a drive shaft, said chuck comprising:
a) a generally cylindrical body member having a nose section and a tail section, said tail section having an axial bore formed therein to mate with said drive shaft of said driver and said nose section defining a front transverse face of said body member, said nose section having an axial bore formed therein and a plurality of angularly disposed passageways formed therethrough and intersecting said axial bore; b) a plurality of jaws slidably positioned in each of said angularly disposed passageways, each of said jaws having a jaw face and threads; c) a nut rotatably disposed about said body member and in engagement with said threads on said jaws so that rotational movement of said nut with respect to said body member moves said jaws in said passageways; d) a nut retainer member disposed about said body nose section, said nut retainer member including a first radial portion that defines a radial diameter that is greater than the outer diameter of said chuck body at a corresponding axial distance and a second radial portion that defines a radial diameter that is greater than said radial diameter of said first radial portion; e) a generally cylindrical sleeve member overlying said nose section of said body member; and f) a rust resistant nosepiece secured to said nose section of said body member, said nosepiece being dimensioned and configured to prevent said sleeve from moving axially past said nosepiece in a direction away from said nut to a position where said sleeve does not overlay said nose section of said body member, wherein said nosepiece covers at least a portion of said front transverse face of said body member.
- 18. The chuck as in claim 17, wherein said first radial portion of said nut retainer member is defined axially forward of said second radial portion.
- 19. The chuck as in claim 17, wherein said nut retainer member defines a frusto-conical portion between said first radial portion and said second radial portion.
- 20. The chuck as in claim 17, wherein said second radial portion of said nut retainer member defines a radial diameter that permits said chuck jaws to move to a fully open position of said chuck without contacting said nut retainer member.
