Claims
- 1. A cigarette filter including a beaded, activated carbon of a spherical form and of a pre-selected diameter.
- 2. The cigarette filter as in claim 1, wherein the beaded carbon of spherical form has a diameter within the range of approximately 0.20 millimeter to 0.70 millimeter.
- 3. The cigarette filter as in claim 2, wherein the beaded carbon of spherical form has a diameter in the range of 0.20 millimeter to 0.40 millimeter.
- 4. The cigarette filter as in claim 3, wherein the beaded carbon of spherical form has a diameter of approximately 0.35 millimeter.
- 5. The cigarette filter as in claim 2, wherein at least a portion of the beaded carbon material has a specific surface area not greater than 1600 meters squared per gram BET.
- 6. The cigarette filter as in claim 5, wherein at least a portion of the beaded carbon material has a specific surface area in the range of 1100 to 1300 meters squared per gram BET.
- 7. The cigarette filter as in claim 2, wherein the activated beaded carbon has a density greater than 0.5 g/cm3.
- 8. The cigarette filter as in claim 2, including a cavity, and wherein the beaded carbon substantially completely fills the cavity.
- 9. The cigarette filter as in claim 2, including a cavity, and wherein the spherical beaded carbon fills approximately 80 to 95 percent of the cavity.
- 10. The cigarette filter as in claim 1, wherein the activated beaded carbon is of a predetermined amount sufficient to reduce at least one smoke constituent by a desired amount.
- 11. The cigarette filter as in claim 10, wherein the activated beaded carbon is of a predetermined amount sufficient to reduce 1,3-butadiene by approximately 90% or more.
- 12. The cigarette filter as in claim 11, wherein the predetermined amount is approximately 70 to 180 milligrams of activated beaded carbon.
- 13. The cigarette filter as in claim 1, including a second beaded material of lesser or no activation when compared to the activated beaded carbon.
- 14. The cigarette filter as in claim 13, wherein the second beaded material comprises a beaded carbon of substantially the same diameter as the activated beaded carbon.
- 15. The cigarette filter as in claim 1, wherein the spherical beaded carbon comprises a first group of individual beads of substantially the same diameter and a second group of individual beads of substantially the same diameter but smaller than the diameter of the beads of the first group.
- 16. The cigarette filter as in claim 15, wherein the spherical beads of the second group have a radius which is approximately
- 17. The cigarette filter as in claim 1, including a cylindrical cavity, and wherein the spherical beaded carbon comprises beads with diameters in the range of 1/10 to 1/40 of the diameter of the cylindrical cavity.
- 18. The cigarette filter as in claim 1, wherein at least a portion of the spherical beaded carbon is flavored.
- 19. The cigarette filter as in claim 18, including at least one additional flavor-releasing segment located downstream from the flavored spherical beaded carbon.
- 20. The cigarette filter as in claim 19, wherein the additional flavor-releasing segment includes yarn with flavorant thereon.
- 21. The cigarette filter as in claim 1, including a flavor-releasing segment downstream from the spherical beaded carbon.
- 22. A cigarette filter as in claim 1, wherein the spherical form of the beaded carbon results from suspending a meltable carbon precursor in a fluid and thereafter solidifying and carbonizing the precursor.
- 23. A cigarette filter as in claim 22, including a second beaded material of lesser or no activation when compared to the activated beaded carbon.
- 24. A cigarette filter as in claim 23, wherein the second beaded material has substantially the same diameter as the activated beaded carbon.
- 25. A cigarette comprising a tobacco rod and a cigarette filter including a beaded, activated carbon of a spherical form and of a pre-selected diameter.
- 26. The cigarette as in claim 25, wherein the beaded carbon of spherical form has a diameter within the range of approximately 0.20 millimeter to 0.70 millimeter.
- 27. The cigarette as in claim 26, wherein the beaded carbon has a diameter of approximately 0.20 millimeters to 0.40 millimeters.
- 28. The cigarette as in claim 27, wherein the beaded carbon of spherical form has a diameter of approximately 0.35 millimeter.
- 29. The cigarette as in claim 25, wherein at least a portion of the beaded carbon material has a specific surface area not greater than 1600 meters squared per gram BET.
- 30. The cigarette as in claim 29, wherein at least a portion of the beaded carbon material has a specific surface area in the range of 1100 to 1300 meters squared per gram BET.
- 31. The cigarette as in claim 25, wherein at least a portion of the beaded carbon as determined by DFT specific micropore volume is at least 0.4 cm3/gm and the total pore volume is not greater than 0.6 cm3/gm.
- 32. The cigarette as in claim 25, wherein the filter includes a cavity and the beaded carbon substantially completely fills the cavity.
- 33. The cigarette as in claim 25, wherein the filler includes a cavity and the spherical beaded carbon fills approximately 80 to 95 percent of the cavity.
- 34. The cigarette as in claim 25, wherein the activated beaded carbon is of a predetermined amount sufficient to reduce at least one smoke constituent by an desired amount.
- 35. The cigarette as in claim 34, wherein the activated beaded carbon is of a predetermined amount sufficient to reduce 1,3-butadiene by approximately 90%.
- 36. The cigarette as in claim 35, wherein the predetermined amount is approximately 70 to 180 milligrams of activated beaded carbon.
- 37. The cigarette as in claim 25, including a second beaded material of lesser or no activation when compared to the activated beaded carbon.
- 38. The cigarette as in claim 37, wherein the second beaded material has substantially the same diameter as the activated beaded carbon.
- 39. The cigarette as in claim 25, wherein the spherical beaded carbon comprises a first group of individual beads of substantially the same diameter and a second group of individual beads of substantially the same diameter but smaller than the diameter of the beads of the first group.
- 40. The cigarette as in claim 39, wherein the spherical beads of the second group have a radius which is approximately
- 41. The cigarette as in claim 25, including a cylindrical cavity, and wherein the spherical beaded carbon comprises beads with diameters in the range of 1/10 to 1/40 of the diameter of the cylindrical cavity.
- 42. The cigarette as in claim 25, wherein the spherical beaded carbon is flavored.
- 43. The cigarette as in claim 42, including at least one additional flavor-releasing segment located downstream from the flavored spherical beaded carbon.
- 44. The cigarette as in claim 43, wherein the additional flavor-releasing segment includes yarn with flavorant thereon.
- 45. The cigarette as in claim 25, including a flavor-releasing segment downstream from the spherical beaded carbon.
- 46. The cigarette as in claim 25, wherein the spherical form of the beaded carbon results from suspending a meltable carbon precursor in a fluid and thereafter solidifying and carbonizing the precursor.
- 47. A cigarette comprising a tobacco rod and a filter including a cavity filled with spherical beaded carbon for removing at least one mainstream tobacco smoke constituent from mainstream tobacco smoke as such smoke is drawn through the filter.
- 48. The cigarette as in claim 47, wherein the spherical beaded carbon cooperates with a material selected from the group consisting of zeolite, silica gel, modified silica gel, inorganic polymers, clay, metal oxides, metal silicates, aluminophosphates and metal phosphates.
- 49. The cigarette as in claim 47, wherein the spherical beaded carbon comprises a first group of individual beads of substantially the same diameter and a second group of individual beads of substantially the same diameter but smaller than the diameter of the beads of the first group.

- 51. The cigarette as in claim 47, wherein the spherical beaded carbon is flavored.
- 52. The cigarette as in claim 51, including at least one additional flavor-releasing segment located downstream from the flavored spherical beaded carbon.
- 53. The cigarette as in claim 52, wherein the additional flavor-releasing segment includes yarn with flavorant thereon.
- 54. The cigarette as in claim 47, including a flavor-releasing segment downstream from the spherical beaded carbon.
- 55. The cigarette as in claim 47, including another beaded carbon material within the cavity of inactivated or less activated carbon beads.
- 56. The cigarette as in claim 47, wherein the filter is cylindrical and the cavity has a diameter approximately equal to the diameter of the filter and a cavity length of approximately 2.5 to 12 millimeters.
- 57. The cigarette as in claim 47, wherein the beaded carbon material has a particle size diameter in the range of 0.2 to 0.7 millimeters.
- 58. The cigarette as in claim 57, wherein the beaded carbon material has a particle size diameter in the range of 0.2 to 0.4 millimeters.
- 59. The cigarette as in claim 58, wherein the beaded carbon material has a particle size diameter of approximately 0.35 mm.
- 60. The cigarette as in claim 47, wherein the beaded carbon material is activated in the range of 1100 to 1300 BET as measured by the BET method.
- 61. The cigarette as in claim 47, further including non-carbon beads in the cavity of approximately the same size as the carbon beads.
