Claims
- 1. A system for detecting wheel sensor malfunctions for an automotive vehicle having a plurality of wheels each having a rotational behavior and having a brake system with a control unit including at least one of anti-lock control and traction slip control, said system for detecting wheel sensor malfunctions comprising:
- sensor means for sensing the rotational behavior of said plurality of wheels and generating output signals representative of the rotational behavior;
- first circuit means, responsive to said output signals, for generating:
- (a) wheel speed signals individually representative of the wheel speeds of said plurality of wheels and
- (b) wheel acceleration signals individually representative of the wheel accelerations of said plurality of wheels;
- logic circuit means, responsive to:
- (a) said wheel speed signals and
- (b) said wheel acceleration signals,
- for generating valve control signals;
- a valve block responsive to said valve control signals for modulating braking pressure; and
- second circuit means, responsive to:
- (a) said wheel speed signals,
- (b) said wheel acceleration signals,
- (c) a predetermined overspeed threshold,
- (d) a predetermined top speed threshold, and
- (e) a predetermined bottom speed threshold
- for initiating a time monitoring function having a duration when:
- (a) at least one of said wheel acceleration signals has a wheel acceleration value which has exceeded said overspeed threshold at some point since the starting of the automotive vehicle,
- (b) at least one of said wheel speed signals has a wheel speed value which is below said bottom speed threshold, and
- (c) at least one of said wheel speed signals has a wheel speed value which exceeds said top speed threshold.
- 2. A system in accordance with claim 1, wherein said second circuit means include means for disconnecting said control unit when said means for initiating a time monitoring function have been maintained for said duration.
- 3. A system in accordance with claim 2, wherein said duration is in the range between 1 and 3 minutes.
- 4. A system in accordance with claim 3 wherein said duration is approximately 2 minutes.
- 5. A system for detecting wheel sensor malfunctions for an automotive vehicle having a plurality of wheels each having a rotational behavior and having a brake system with a control unit including at least one of anti-lock control and traction slip control, said system for detecting wheel sensor malfunctions comprising:
- sensor means for sensing the rotational behavior of said plurality of wheels and generating output signals representative of the rotational behavior;
- first circuit means, responsive to said output signals, for generating:
- (a) wheel speed signals individually representative of the wheel speeds of said plurality of wheels and
- (b) wheel acceleration signals individually representative of the wheel accelerations of said plurality of wheels;
- logic circuit means, responsive to:
- (a) said wheel speed signals and
- (b) said wheel acceleration signals,
- for generating valve control signals;
- a valve block responsive to said valve control signals for modulating braking pressure; and
- second circuit means, responsive to:
- (a) said wheel speed signals,
- (b) said wheel acceleration signals,
- (c) a predetermined overspeed threshold,
- (d) a predetermined top speed threshold, and
- (e) a predetermined bottom speed threshold
- for initiating a time monitoring function having a duration when:
- (a) at least one of said wheel acceleration signals has a wheel acceleration value which has exceeded said overspeed threshold at some point since the starting of the automotive vehicle,
- (b) at least one of said wheel speed signals has a wheel speed value which is below said bottom speed threshold, and
- (c) at least one of said wheel speed signals has a wheel speed value which exceeds said top speed threshold,
- wherein said second circuit means further include:
- means for accumulating the time periods during which at least one of said wheel speed signals has a wheel speed value which exceeds said top speed threshold; and
- means for resetting the accumulated time period to zero when said at least one of said wheel speed signals which had a wheel speed value exceeding said top speed threshold decreases to a value less than the bottom speed threshold.
- 6. A system for detecting wheel sensor malfunctions for an automotive vehicle having a plurality of wheels each having a rotational behavior and having a brake system with a control unit including at least one of anti-lock control and traction slip control, said system for detecting wheel sensor malfunctions comprising:
- sensor means for sensing the rotational behavior of said plurality of wheels and generating output signals representative of the rotational behavior;
- first circuit means, responsive to said output signals, for generating:
- (a) wheel speed signals individually representative of the wheel speeds of said plurality of wheels and
- (b) wheel acceleration signals individually representative of the wheel accelerations of said plurality of wheels;
- logic circuit means, responsive to:
- (a) said wheel speed signals and
- (b) said wheel acceleration signals,
- for generating valve control signals;
- a valve block responsive to said valve control signals for modulating braking pressure; and
- second circuit means, responsive to:
- (a) said wheel speed signals,
- (b) said wheel acceleration signals,
- (c) a predetermined overspeed threshold,
- (d) a predetermined top speed threshold, and
- (e) a predetermined bottom speed threshold
- for initiating a time monitoring function having a duration when:
- (a) at least one of said wheel acceleration signals has a wheel acceleration value which has exceeded said overspeed threshold at some point since the starting of the automotive vehicle,
- (b) at least one of said wheel speed signals has a wheel speed value which is below said bottom speed threshold, and
- (c) at least one of said wheel speed signals has a wheel speed value which exceeds said top speed threshold,
- wherein said second circuit means further include:
- means for identifying the fastest vehicle wheel which has a wheel speed value greater than the remaining wheels; and
- means for shortening said duration when said fastest wheel has an approximately constant acceleration.
- 7. A system in accordance with claim 6, wherein said means for shortening said duration include means for detecting an approximately constant acceleration of said fastest wheel by monitoring the variation of speed of said fastest wheel over a predetermined time interval beginning after said wheel speed value of said fastest wheel exceeds said top speed threshold.
- 8. A system in accordance with claim 6, wherein said means for shortening said duration shorten said duration by a predetermined value in the range between 10 and 50 seconds when the variation of speed of said fastest wheel, after said wheel speed value of said fastest wheel exceeds said top speed threshold, is measured to be below approximately 0.1 to 0.2 g.
- 9. A system in accordance with claim 8, wherein said predetermined value is approximately 20 seconds.
- 10. A system in accordance with claim 6, wherein said means for shortening said duration include means for detecting an approximately constant acceleration of said fastest wheel by monitoring the variation of speed of said fastest wheel over a predetermined time interval beginning after an acceleration occurs which is in excess of predetermined limit value of approximately .+-.1 g.
