Claims
- 1. A computer system, comprising:
- a bus;
- one or more bus devices coupled to said bus, one of the bus devices being a hard disk system, each bus device operable to provide a bus device request signal if access said bus is desired;
- a microprocessor subsystem including a processor and memory coupled to said bus, said microprocessor subsystem operable to provide a processor request signal if access to said bus is desired, said microprocessor subsystem operable to post a write cycle except when a flush request signal is received, and said microprocessor subsystem operable to force a retry of any memory access cycle received from a bus device if a write cycle is posted by said microprocessor subsystem;
- an arbiter responsive to said processor request signal and each of said bus device request signals for granting bus ownership to one of the bus devices or said microprocessor subsystem;
- a minimum grant timer responsive to said arbiter for indicating a minimum grant time, said arbiter granting said bus to the bus owner for at least the minimum grant time;
- monitoring logic coupled to each of the bus devices for monitoring said bus device request signals; and
- flushing logic coupled to said monitoring logic for providing a flush request signal to said microprocessor subsystem if one of said plurality of bus device request signals is provided.
- 2. The computer system of claim 1, wherein said arbiter asserts one of a plurality of grant signals to indicate which one of the bus devices or microprocessor subsystem has bus ownership, and wherein any one of said one or more bus devices or microprocessor subsystem that is a target device of the bus owner forces a retry if said target device is unable to complete a bus transaction, said bus transaction including at least a first data transfer cycle, the computer system further comprising:
- timer clearing logic coupled to said bus and said minimum grant timer for clearing said minimum grant timer if the retry is detected before said target device completes the first data transfer cycle, and
- wherein clearing said minimum grant timer causes said arbiter to deassert said grant signal corresponding to the bus owner.
- 3. The computer system of claim 2, wherein said timer clearing logic is inoperable to clear said minimum grant timer if a retry is detected before the target device completes a subsequent data transfer cycle.
- 4. The computer system of claim 2, wherein said arbiter maintains the priority of the bus owner whose grant signal was deasserted due to said minimum grant timer being cleared.
- 5. The computer system of claim 2, wherein said minimum grant timer remains enabled if a retry is detected after said target device completes said data transfer cycle.
- 6. The computer system of claim 1, wherein said minimum grant timer is loaded with a minimum grant time value to indicate the minimum time period that a bus device is to be granted ownership of said bus, and wherein said flushing logic does not assert said flush request signal if said loaded minimum grant time value is equal to zero.
- 7. The computer system of claim 1, wherein said bus is according to the PCI standard and wherein said microprocessor subsystem includes a bridge coupled to said PCI bus.
- 8. The computer system of claim 7, wherein said bridge is the Intel 82434 chip.
- 9. A computer system, comprising:
- a bus;
- one or more bus devices coupled to said bus, one of the bus devices being a hard disk system, each bus device operable to provide a bus device request signal if access said bus is desired, each bus device operable to force a retry of a bus transaction if the bus device is a target device and cannot complete the bus transaction, the bus transaction including at least a first data transfer cycle;
- a microprocessor subsystem including a processor and memory coupled to said bus, said microprocessor subsystem operable to provide a processor request signal if access to said bus is desired, said microprocessor subsystem operable to force a retry of a bus transaction if said microprocessor subsystem is a target device and cannot complete the bus transaction, the bus transaction including at least a first data transfer cycle;
- an arbiter responsive to the request signals and a minimum grant time for granting bus ownership to one of the bus devices or said microprocessor subsystem;
- a minimum grant timer responsive to said arbiter for indicating a minimum grant time, said arbiter operable to grant said bus to the bus owner for at least the minimum grant time; and
- timer clearing logic coupled to said bus and said minimum grant timer for clearing said minimum grant timer if a retry is detected before the target device completes the first data transfer cycle, and
- wherein clearing said minimum grant timer causes said arbiter to deassert said grant signal corresponding to the bus owner.
- 10. The computer system of claim 9, wherein said timer clearing logic is inoperable to clear said minimum grant timer if a retry is detected before the target device completes a subsequent data transfer cycle.
- 11. The computer system of claim 9, wherein said arbiter maintains the priority of the bus owner whose grant signal was deasserted due to said minimum grant timer being cleared.
- 12. The computer system of claim 9, wherein said minimum grant timer remains enabled if the retry is detected after the target completes the data transfer cycle.
- 13. The computer system of claim 9, wherein said bus is according to the PCI standard.
- 14. The computer system of claim 9, wherein said minimum grant timer is loaded with a minimum grant time value to indicate the minimum grant time that a bus device is to be granted ownership of said bus.
- 15. A method of selectively preventing a first bus master from posting write cycles, the method comprising the steps of:
- loading a minimum grant timer with a value, the minimum grant timer indicating a minimum grant period for each bus owner;
- a second bus master requesting access to the bus;
- providing the flush request signal while the second bus master request is active if the minimum grant timer value is greater than zero;
- blocking posted write cycles from the first bus master to a target device responsive to the flush request signal; and
- granting access to the second bus master for the minimum grant period according to a priority.
- 16. The method of claim 15, wherein the target device is operable to force a retry if a write cycle is posted, further comprising the step of:
- clearing the minimum grant timer if a retry is detected during a first data transfer cycle.
- 17. The method of claim 16, further comprising the step of:
- maintaining the priority of the bus owner whose minimum grant period was cut short due to the minimum grant timer being cleared.
- 18. The method of claim 15, wherein the bus is according to a peripheral component interconnect (PCI) standard.
