The combination as set forth in claim 95 including an electromagnet pole piece disposed intermediate each said pair of permanent magnets and at said midlocation between said pair of adjacent yarn feed locations that is operative to generate a magnetic flux in opposition to said magnetic retention flux to negate the latter in response to application of an externally generated and selectively applied electrical signal.
- 97. The combination as set forth in claim 96 wherein said electrical signal is delivered in response to preprogrammed instruction.
- 98. The combination as set forth in claim 72 including means for adjusting the vertical elevation of said knitting needle support cylinder relative to said stationary external sleeve.
- 99. In the circular weft knitting of articles through the controlled displacement of a hooked end needle element and an independently displaceable closing element of a compound needle member assembly conjointly slideably mounted in a longitudinal guide channel in a rotatable knitting needle support cylinder to selectively provide for optionally available knit, tuck or float operations at each yarn feed location, the steps of
- elastically deforming the intermediate body portion of said hooked end needle element to radially outwardly displace the dependent end portion thereof from a radially retracted location within said guide channel to a radially advanced location,
- magnetically retaining said displaced dependent end portion of said hooked end needle element in said radially advanced location concurrent with rotative displacement of said knitting needle support cylinder,
- selectively interrupting the magnetic retention of said displaced dependent end portion of said hooked end needle element to permit the stored energy in the elastically deformed intermediate body portion thereof to initiate a return of said dependent end portion thereof to its retracted position,
- independently concurrently elastically deforming the intermediate body portion of said closing element to radially outwardly displace the dependent end portion thereof from a radially retracted location within said guide channel to a radially advanced location,
- independently concurrently magnetically retaining said dependent end portion of said closing element in said radially advanced location concurrent with rotative displacement of said knitting needle support, and
- independently concurrently selectively interrupting the magnetic retention of the dependent end portion of said closing element to permit the stored energy in the elastically deformed intermediate body portion thereof to initiate a return of the dependent end portion thereof to its retracted position.
- 100. The circular weft knitting of variegated articles as set forth in claim 99 including the step of clamping the upper portions of said needle and closing elements coincident with the elastic deformation of said intermediate body portions thereof.
- 101. The circular weft knitting of variegated articles as set forth in claim 99 wherein said steps of interrupting the magnetic retention of said needle and closing element is effected by application of selective electrical signals responsive to preprogrammed instructions.
- 102. In the circular weft knitting of articles through the controlled displacement of a hooked end needle element and an independently displaceable closing element of a compound needle member assembly conjointly slideably mounted in a longitudinal guide channel in a rotatable knitting needle support cylinder, the steps of
- elastically deforming the intermediate body portion of said needle element to radially outwardly displace the dependent end portion thereof from a radially retracted location within said guide channel to a radially advanced location,
- magnetically retaining said displaced dependent end portion of said needle element in said radially advanced location concurrent with rotative displacement of said knitting needle support cylinder,
- selectively interrupting the magnetic retention of said displaced dependent end portion of said needle element to permit the stored energy in the elastically deformed intermediate body portion thereof to initiate a return of said dependent end portion thereof to its retracted position,
- independently elastically deforming the intermediate body portion of said closing element to radially outwardly displace the dependent end portion thereof from a radially retracted location within said guide channel to a radially advanced location,
- independently, magnetically retaining said dependent end portion of said closing element in said radially advanced location concurrent with rotative displacement of said knitting needle support cylinder,
- independently selectively interrupting the magnetic retention of the dependent end portion of said closing element to permit the stored energy in the elastically deformed intermediate body portion thereof to initiate a return of the dependent end portion thereof to its retracted position and
- clamping the upper portions of said needle and closing elements coincident with the elastic deformation of said intermediate body portions thereof.
- 103. The circular weft knitting of variegated articles as set forth in claim 102 wherein said steps of interrupting the magnetic retention of said needle and closing element is effected by application of selective electrical signals responsive to preprogrammed instructions.
