Claims
- 1. Clamshell action Post Hole Digger comprising:
- a stationary hollow shaft having an upper end and a lower end;
- support bracket means mounted at said lower end of said stationary shaft for mounting a pair of spaced apart opposed shovel blades;
- a pair of opposed facing shovel blades hingedly and symmetrically mounted to said support bracket means;
- stationary handle means mounted at said upper end of said stationary hollow shaft for allowing the user to hold and manipulate said post hole digger;
- a rotatable rod having an upper end and a lower end positioned in said hollow shaft and being slightly longer than said hollow shaft;
- movable handle means mounted to said upper end of said rod for allowing the user to hold the post hole digger and to act as a handle to open and close said shovel blades by pivotally turning said movable handle means;
- eccentric cam means centrally mounted to said lower end of said rod for closing and opening said pair of opposed shovel blades in response to the user pivotally turning said movable handle means attached to said upper end of said rod; means for mounting said pair of opposed shovel blades to said support bracket means;
- biasing means for keeping said opposed facing shovel blades open unless closed in response to said eccentric cam means being rotated by turning said handle means at said upper end of said rotatable rod; and
- locking means on said eccentric cam means and locking means on said means for mounting said shovel blades to said bracket means for locking said pair of opposed shovel blades in the open position to prevent deflection of said opposed shovel blades during the digging operation.
- 2. The clamshell action post hole digger as recited in claim 1 wherein:
- said locking means on said eccentric cam means includes a pair of tang locks;
- said locking means on said shovel blade mounting means includes a receiving hole for one of said tang locks.
- 3. The clamshell action post hole digger as recited in claim 2 wherein said means for mounting each said opposed shovel blade to said support bracket means includes:
- an elongate metal bar having a lower portion and an upper portion and a lengthwise short edge;
- said lower portion of said lengthwise short edge of said bar welded to the inside face of said shovel blade;
- said upper portion of said metal bar having an upper hole, a middle hole, and a lower hole aligned lengthwise;
- said lower hole for connecting said bar to a slotted fork on said support bracket means;
- a hinge pin means passed through said lower hole and said slotted fork for allowing said shovel blade to tilt back and forth in a plane;
- said biasing means comprises a tension spring having at least one hooked end;
- said middle hole in said bar for receiving said hooked end of said tension spring; and
- said upper hole for receiving said tang lock on said eccentric cam means.
- 4. Clamshell action Post Hole Digger comprising:
- a hollow shaft having an upper end and a lower end;
- bracket means at said lower end of said shaft for mounting a pair of shovel blades;
- a pair of shovel blades mounted to said bracket means;
- handle means mounted at said upper end of said hollow shaft for allowing the user to hold and manipulate said post hole digger;
- a rotatable rod having an upper end and a lower end positioned in said hollow shaft;
- handle means at said upper end of said rod for allowing the user to open and close said shovel blades by turning said handle means;
- eccentric cam means mounted at said lower end of said rod for closing and opening said pair of shovel blades in response to the user turning said handle means;
- means for mounting said pair of shovel blades to said bracket means;
- biasing means for keeping said pair of shovel blades open unless closed in response to said eccentric cam means being rotated by turning said rotatable rod; and
- means for locking said pair of shovel blades in the open position to prevent deflection of said shovel blades during the digging operation.
- 5. The device as recited in claim 4 wherein said means for locking said pair of shovel blades in the open position includes a locking bar.
- 6. The device as recited in claim 4 wherein said means for mounting the shovel blades is a rectangular-shaped bar having a notch and a portion of one edge beveled.
