Claims
- 1. An aqueous cleaning and disinfecting composition, comprising:
- (a) from about 2% to about 25%, by weight, based on the total weight of the composition, of an interhalogen selected from the group consisting of iodine chloride, iodine trichloride, iodine bromide, bromine chloride, and mixtures thereof; and
- (b) from about 24% to about 95% by weight, based on the total weight of the composition of at least one acid which is not appreciably oxidized by the interhalogen, selected from the group consisting of nitric acid, phosphoric acid, hydrochloric acid, sulfamic acid, sulfuric acid, and mixtures thereof.
- 2. A composition as claimed in claim 1, wherein the interhalogen is present in an amount of up to about 10 percent by weight.
- 3. A composition as claimed in claim 2, wherein the interhalogen is present in an amount ranging about 2% to about 3% by weight.
- 4. A composition as claimed in claim 1, which further comprises:
- an interhalogen solubilizing agent selected from the group consisting of metal halides, hydrohalic acids and mixtures thereof, the solubilizing agent being present in the composition in an amount ranging from about 0%, by weight to about 25%, by weight.
- 5. A composition as claimed in claim 4, wherein:
- (a) the solubilizing component is selected from the group consisting of an alkali metal chloride and hydrochloric acid when the interhalogen is iodine chloride, iodine trichloride, iodine bromide or bromine chloride, and
- (b) the solubilizing agent is selected from the group consisting of an alkali metal bromide and hydrobromic acid when the interhalogen is iodine bromide.
- 6. A composition as claimed in claim 5, wherein the solubilizing component is present in an amount up to about 25% by weight.
- 7. A composition as claimed in claim 1, wherein the acid is nitric acid.
- 8. A composition as claimed in claim 1, wherein the acid is present in an amount of up to about 40%, by weight.
- 9. A composition as claimed in claim 8, wherein the acid is present in an amount ranging about 24 to 26% by weight.
- 10. A composition as claimed in claim 1, which further comprises at least one compatible auxiliary additive, wherein the additive is selected from the group consisting of dispersants, surfactants, corrosion inhibitors, tracers, and mixtures thereof, the auxiliary additive being present in an amount from about 0 to 5%, by weight, based on the total weight of the composition.
- 11. A composition as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that the composition is in solid form.
- 12. A composition as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that the composition is in liquid concentrate form.
- 13. An in-use cleaning and disinfecting solution comprising:
- (a) water; and
- (b) up to about 5% by weight of the composition of claim 10.
- 14. An in-use cleaning and disinfecting solution comprising:
- (a) water; and
- (b) up to about 5% by weight of the composition of claim 1.
