Claims
- 1. A disposable, single use personal cleansing article especially useful for cleansing skin or hair, which article comprising:(a) a water insoluble nonwoven substrate comprised of fibers having at least one cleansing surface, wherein the cleansing surface of said substrate contains a plurality of apertures which range in size from about 1.5 to 5 mm in diameter and which are located within said cleansing surface of said subtrate at a frequency of from about 2 to about 12 per linear centimeter; and (b) from about 0.5% to about 250% by weight of said substrate of a lathering surfactant releasably associated with said substrate.
- 2. The article according to claim 1 wherein the article is capable of generating an Average Lather Volume of greater than or equal to about 30 ml upon wetting.
- 3. The article according to claim 1 wherein the article is capable of generating an Average Lather Volume of greater than or equal to about 50 ml upon wetting.
- 4. The article according to claim 1 wherein the article is capable of generating an Average Lather Volume of greater than or equal to about 75 ml upon wetting.
- 5. The article according to claim 1 wherein the article is capable of generating an Average Lather Volume of greater than or equal to about 90 ml upon wetting.
- 6. The article according to claim 1 wherein the article is capable of generating an Average Lather Volume of greater than or equal to about 150 ml upon wetting.
- 7. The article according to claim 1 wherein the average size of said aperture ranges from about 2 mm to about 4 mm.
- 8. The article of claim 1 wherein the frequency of the aperture ranges from about 2 to about 8 per linear centimeter.
- 9. The article according to claim 1 wherein the lathering surfactant is present in an amount of from about 1% to about 250% by weight of said substrate.
- 10. The article according to claim 1 wherein the lathering surfactant is present in an amount of from about 10% to about 250% by weight of said substrate.
- 11. The article according to claim 1 wherein the lathering surfactant is selected from the group consisting of anionic lathering surfactants, nonionic lathering surfactants, amphoteric lathering surfactants, and mixtures thereof.
- 12. The article according to claim 1 wherein the lathering surfactant is comprised of one or more anionic lathering surfactants and one or more amphoteric lathering surfactants.
- 13. The article according to claim 12 wherein the article is capable of generating an Average Lather Volume of greater than or equal to about 75 ml upon wetting.
- 14. The article according to claim 12 wherein the lathering surfactant is present in an amount of from about 10% to about 250% by weight of said substrate.
- 15. The article according to claim 1 further comprising a conditioning component added onto or impregnated into said substrate.
- 16. The article according to claim 1 further comprising from about 0.1% to about 50% by weight of said substrate of a conditioning component added onto or impregnated into said substrate.
- 17. The article according to claim 1 further comprising from about 1% to about 50% by weight of said substrate of a conditioning component added onto or impregnated into said substrate.
- 18. The article according to claim 1 further comprising from about 1% to about 25% by weight of said substrate of a conditioning component added onto or impregnated into said substrate.
- 19. The article according to claim 1 wherein said conditioning component comprises at least one material selected from the group consisting of fatty acids, esters of fatty acids, fatty alcohols, ethoxylated alcohols, polyol polyesters, glycerin mono-esters, glycerin polyesters, epidermal and sebaceous hydrocarbons, lanolin, straight and branched hydrocarbons, silicone oil, silicone gum, vegetable oil, vegetable oil adduct, hydrogenated vegetable oils, nonionic polymers, natural waxes, synthetic waxes, polyolefinic glycols, polyolefinic monoester, polyolefinic polyesters, cholesterols, cholesterol esters and mixtures thereof.
- 20. The article according to claim 19 wherein said conditioning component comprises at least one material selected from the group consisting of paraffin, mineral oil, petrolatum, cholesterols, cholesterol esters, stearyl alcohol, cetyl alcohol, cetearyl alcohol, behenyl alcohol, C10-30 polyesters of sucrose, stearic acid, palmitic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid, myristic acid, lauric acid, ricinoleic acid, steareth-1-100, cetereath 1-100, cholesterols, cholesterols esters, glyceryl tribehenate, glyceryl dipalmitate, glyceryl monostearate, trihydroxystearin, ozokerite wax, jojoba wax, lanolin wax, ethylene glycol distearate, candelilla wax, carnauba wax, beeswax, silicone waxes.
- 21. The article according to claim 15 wherein the conditioning component is a conditioning emulsion.
- 22. The article according to claim 15 wherein the weight ratio of the lathering surfactant to conditioning component is less than about 40:1.
- 23. The article according to claim 22 wherein the weight ratio is greater than 5:1.
- 24. The article according to claim 22 wherein the weight ratio is greater than 2:5:1.
- 25. The article according to claim 22 wherein the weight ratio is greater than 1:1.
- 26. The article according to claim 1 wherein the article is contained within a package which provides instructions for cleansing the face with the substrate.
- 27. The article according to claim 1 further comprising an optional component selected from the group consisting of abrasives, absorbents, anticaking agents, antioxidants, vitamins, binders, biological additives, buffering agents, bulking agents, chelating agents, chemical additives, colorants, cosmetic astringents, cosmetic biocides, denaturants, drug astringents, external analgesics, film formers, fragrance components, humectants, opacifying agents, pH adjusters, preservatives, propellants, reducing agents, skin bleaching agents, sunscreening agents, fragrances, pigments, colorings, essential oils, skin sensates, astringents, skin soothing agents, skin healing agents, and combinations thereof.
- 28. The article according to claim 1 wherein at least a portion of the apertured substrate is wet extensible.
- 29. The article according to claim 1 wherein the substrate is hydroentangled.
- 30. The article according to claim 29 wherein the substrate is comprised of rayon, polyester, or mixtures thereof.
- 31. The article according to claim 30 wherein the substrate contains a mixture of rayon and polyester.
- 32. The article according to claim 29 wherein the substrate comprises a latex binder.
- 33. The article according to claim 1 wherein the substrate has a basis weight of from about 25 to about 96 gsm.
- 34. The article according to claim 33 wherein the substrate has a basis weight of from about 36to about 84 gsm.
- 35. The article according to claim 34 wherein the substrate has a basis weight of from about 42 to about 78 gsm.
- 36. The article according to claim 29 wherein the substrate has a basis weight of from about 25 to about 96 gsm.
- 37. The article according to claim 36 wherein the substrate has a basis weight of from about 42 to about 78 gsm.
- 38. The article according to claim 1 wherein the cleansing surface area is from about 6 to about 1000 cm2.
- 39. The article according to claim 38 wherein the cleansing surface area is from about 65 to about 775 cm2.
- 40. The article according to claim 39 wherein the cleansing surface area is from about 150 to about 400 cm2.
- 41. The article according to claim 1 wherein the thickness of the substrate is from about 1 to about 500 mil.
- 42. The article according to claim 41 wherein the thickness of the substrate is from about 5 to about 250 mil.
- 43. The article according to claim 1 wherein the substrate is a nonwoven made by a hydroentanglement process, a thermally bonding or themo-bonding process, or a combination of such processes.
- 44. The article according to claim 1 wherein the apertured substrate provides a lather generating effect.
- 45. The article according to claim 1 wherein the apertured of the substrate are substantially uniform in both size and shape.
- 46. The article according to claim 1 wherein the substrate has a different texture on each side.
- 47. The article according to claim 1 wherein the texture on the cleansing surface side is more abrasive than the texture on the opposite side.
- 48. The article according to claim 1 wherein the wet caliper to dry caliper ratio of the article is greater than about 1.0.
- 49. The article according to claim 1 wherein the wet caliper to dry caliper ratio of the article is greater than about 1.2.
- 50. The article according to claim 1 wherein the substrate has a wet extensibility of at least about 4%.
- 51. The article according to claim 1 wherein the substrate has a wet extensibility of at least about 10%.
- 52. The article according to claim 1 wherein the aperture comprise from about 15 to about 75% of the total surface of the substrate.
- 53. The article according to claim 1 wherein the substrate has a peak load wet burst strength of from about 100 to about 1200 grams per ply.
- 54. The article according to claim 1 wherein the substrate has a peak load wet burst strength of from about 400 to about 700 grams per ply.
- 55. The article according to claim 1 wherein the substrate has a peak load wet burst strength of from about 500 to about 600 grams per ply.
- 56. The article according to claim 1 wherein the substrate is a nonwoven comprising a collection of fibers made by air-laying, water-laying, meltblowing, conforming, spinbonding, or carding processes in which the nonwoven fibers are cut to desired lengths, passed into a water or air stream, and then deposited onto a screen or belt through which the fiber-laden air or water is passed.
- 57. The article according to claim 1 wherein the frequency of aperture in the substrate is about 3 per linear centimeter.
- 58. The article according to claim 1 wherein the apertures protrude completely through the substrate to the surface of the substrate which is opposite to the cleansing surface.
- 59. The article of claim 1 wherein the aperture are uniformly distributed within the cleansing surface.
- 60. The article of claim 1 wherein the article is substantially dry.
- 61. The article of claim 1 wherein the substrate consists essentially of fibers.
- 62. The article of claim 1 wherein the substrate is a single ply substrate.
- 63. The article of claim 19 wherein the conditioning component comprises silicone.
- 64. The article of claim 1 which additionally comprises a material selected from the group consisting of cationic polymers, nonionic polymers and mixture thereof.
- 65. The article of claim 1 wherein the substrate is a multilayered substrate.
- 66. The article of claim 65 wherein the apertures protrude completely through the substrate to the surface of the substrate which is opposite to the cleansing surface.
- 67. The article of claim 65 wherein the aperture protrude completely through one layer of the substrate.
- 68. The article of claim 65 wherein the substrate consists essentially of fibers.
- 69. The article of claim 1 wherein the article comprises greater than about 10% by weight of water.
- 70. A disposable, single use, single ply personal cleansing article especially useful for cleansing skin or hair, which article comprises:(a) a water insoluble, nonwoven substrate comprised of fibers having at least one cleansing surface, wherein the cleansing surface of said substrate contains a plurality of apertures which range in size from about 2 to 4 mm in diameter and which are located within said cleansing surface of said substrate at a frequency of from about 2 to about 8 per linear centimeter; and (b) from about 0.5% to about 250% by weight of said substrate of a lathering surfactant releasably associated with said substrate, and (c) from about 0.01% to about 99% of a conditioning agent, wherein the substrate is substantially dry and wherein the apertures are uniformly distributed on the cleansing surface of the substrate and wherein the apertures protrude completely through the substrate to the surface of the substrate which is opposite to the cleansing surface.
- 71. A disposable, single use, personal cleansing article for cleansing and conditioning the skin, said personal cleansing article being water-activated during use to generate lather, said article comprising:(a) a water-insoluble, nonwoven substrate comprised of a web fibers, said substrate having at least one cleansing surface containing a plurality of aperture, said apertures ranging in average size from about 0.5 to about 5 mm in diameter and being located within said cleansing surface of said substrate at a frequency of from about 0.5 to about 12 per linear centimeter; (b) From about 0.5% to about 250% by weight said substrate of a lathering surfactant releasably associated with said substrate, and (c) From about 0.01% to about 99% of a conditioning component by weight of the substrate added onto or impregnated into said substrate, wherein said personal cleaning article generating an Average Lather Volume of greater than or equal to about 75 mls upon wetting.
- 72. The article of claim 71 wherein the article is substantially dry.
- 73. The article of claim 71 wherein said aperture range in size from about 2 mm to about 4 mm.
- 74. The article of claim 71 wherein the apertures are located within said cleansing surface of said substrate at a frequency of from about 2 to about 6 per linear centimeter.
- 75. The article of claim 71 wherein the apertures are uniformly distributed on the cleansing surface of the substrate.
- 76. The article of claim 71 wherein the apertures protrude completely through the substrate to the surface of the substrate which is opposite to the cleansing surface.
- 77. The article of claim 71 wherein the substrate is a single ply substrate.
- 78. The article of claim 71 wherein the nonwoven substrate consists essentially of fibers.
- 79. The article of claim 71 wherein the conditioning component comprises a water soluble conditioning ingredient which comprises glycerin.
- 80. The article according to claim 71 wherein the article is capable of generating an Average Lather Volume of greater than or equal to about 90 ml upon wetting.
- 81. The article according to claim 71 wherein the lathering surfactant is present in an amount of from about 0.5% to about 12.5% by weight of said substrate.
- 82. The article according to claim 71 wherein the lathering surfactant is present in an amount of from about 10% to about 250% by weight of said substrate.
- 83. The article according to claim 71 wherein the lathering surfactant is selected from the group consisting of anionic lathering surfactants, nonionic lathering surfactants, amphoteric lathering surfactants, and mixtures thereof.
- 84. The article according to claim 71 wherein the lathering surfactant is comprised of one or more anionic lathering surfactants and one or more amphoteric lathering surfactants.
- 85. The article according to claim 71 wherein the lathering surfactant consists essentially of a lathering surfactant selected from the group consisting of anionic surfactants, amphoteric surfactants and mixtures thereof.
- 86. The article according to claim 71 wherein the article comprises from about 0.1% to about 50% by weight of said substrate of a conditioning component added onto or impregnated into said substrate.
- 87. The article according to claim 71 wherein the article comprises from about 1% to about 50% by weight of said substrate of a conditioning component added onto or impregnated into said substrate.
- 88. The article according to claim 71 wherein the article comprises from about 1% to about 25% by weight of said substrate of a conditioning component added onto or impregnated into said substrate.
- 89. The article according to claim 71 wherein said conditioning component comprises at least one material selected from the group consisting of fatty acids, esters of fatty acids, fatty alcohols, ethoxylated alcohols, polyol polyesters, glycerin mono-esters, glycerin polyesters, epidermal and sebaceous hydrocarbons, lanolin, straight and branched hydrocarbons, silicone oil, silicone gum, vegetable oil, vegetable oil adduct, hydrogenated vegetable oils, nonionic polymers, natural waxes, synthetic waxes, polyolefinic glycols, polyolefinic monoester, polyolefinic polyesters, cholesterols, cholesterol esters, paraffin, mineral oil, petrolatum, cholesterols,cholesterol esters, stearyl alcohol, cetyl alcohol, cetearyl alcohol, behenyl alcohol, C10-30 polyesters of sucrose, stearic acid, palmitic acid, behenic acid, aleic acid, linoleic acid, myristic acid, lauric acid, ricinoleic acid, steareth-1-100, cetereath 1-100, cholesterol esters, glyceryl tribehenate, glyceryl dipalmitate, glyceryl monostearate, trihydroxystearin, ozokerite wax, jojoba wax, lanolin wax, ethylene glycol distearate, candelilla wax, carnauba wax, beeswax, silicone waxes and mixtures thereof.

The article according to claim 71 wherein said conditioning component comprises at least one material selected from the group consisting of glycerin mono-esters, glycerin polyesters, epidermal and sebaceous hydrocarbons, lanolin, straight and branched hydrocarbons, vegetable oil adduct, hydrogenated vegetable oils, natural waxes, polyolefinic polyesters, cholesterols, cholesterol estersparaffin, petrolatum, cholesterols, cholesterols esters, C10-30 polyesters of sucrose, cholesterol esters, glyceryl tribehenate, glyceryl dipalmitate, glyceryl monostearate, trihydroxystearin, and mixtures thereof.
- 91. The article according to claim 71 wherein the conditioning component is a conditioning emulsion.
- 92. The article according to claim 71 wherein the weight ratio of the lathering surfactant to conditioning component is less than about 40:1.
- 93. The article according to claim 71 wherein the weight ratio is greater than 5:1.
- 94. The article according to claim 71 wherein the weight ratio is greater than 2.5:1.
- 95. The article according to claim 71 wherein the weight ratio is greater than 1:1
- 96. The article according to claim 71 wherein the article is contained within a package which provides instructions on cleansing the face with the substrate.
- 97. The article according to claim 71 further comprising an optional component selected from the group consisting of abrasives, absorbents, anticaking agents, antioxidants, vitamins, binders, biological additives, buffering agents, bulking agents, chelating agents, chemical additives, colorants, cosmetic astringents, cosmetic biocides, denaturants, drug astringents, external analgesics, film formers, fragrance components, humectants, opacifying agents, pH adjusters, preservatives, propellants, reducing agents, skin bleaching agents, sunscreening agents, fragrances, pigments, colorings, essential oils, skin sensates, astringents, skin soothing agents, skin healing agents, and combinations thereof.
- 98. The article according to claim 71 wherein at least a portion of the apertured substrate is wet extensible.
- 99. The article according to claim 71 wherein the substrate is hydroentangled.

- 101. The article according to claim 71 wherein the substrate comprises a latex binder.

- 106. The article according to claim 71 wherein the apertures of the substrate are substantially uniform in both size and shape.
- 107. The article according to claim 71 wherein the substrate has a different texture on each side.
- 108. The article according to claim 107 wherein the texture on the cleansing surface side is more abrasive than the texture on the opposite side.
- 109. The article according to claim 71 wherein the substrate has a wet extensibility of at least about 10 %.
- 110. The article according to claim 71 wherein the apertures comprise from about 15 to about 75% of the total surface of the substrate.
- 111. The article according to claim 71 wherein the substrate has a peak load wet burst strength of from about 500 to about 600 grams per ply.
- 112. The article according to claim 71 wherein the apertures are hydroapertured.
- 113. The article of claim 71 which additionally comprises a material selected from the group consisting of cationic polymers, nonionic polymers and mixtures thereof.
- 114. The article of claim 71 wherein the article comprises greater than 10% by weight of water.
- 115. The article of claim 71 wherein the substrate is multilayered.
- 116. The article of claim 115 wherein the apertures protrude completely through the substrate to the surface of the substrate which is opposite to the cleansing surface.
- 117. The article of claim 115 wherein the apertures protrude complete through one layer of the substrate.
- 118. A disposable, single use, single ply personal cleansing article for cleansing and conditioning the skin, said personal cleansing article being water-activated during use to generate lather, said article comprising:(a) a water-insoluble, substrate having at least one cleansing surface containing a plurality of aperture, said apertures ranging in average size from about 0.5 to about 5 mm in diameter and being located within said cleansing surface of said substrate at a frequency of from about 0.5 to about 12 per linear centimeter; (b) From about 0.5% to about 250% by weight said substrate of a lathering surfactant releasably associated with said substrate; wherein the substrate is a nonwoven substrate comprised of fibers.
- 119. The article of claim 118 which generates an average lather volume of greater than or equal to about 90 mls up wetting.
- 120. The article of claim 118 wherein the article is substantially dry.
- 121. The article of claim 118 wherein said apertures range in size from about 1 mm to about 4 mm.
- 122. The article of claim 118 wherein the apertures are located within said cleansing surface of said substrate at a frequency of from about 2 to about 6 per linear centimeter.
- 123. The article of claim 118 wherein the apertures are uniformly distributed on the cleansing surface of the substrate.
- 124. The article of claim 118 wherein the apertures protrude completely through the substrate to the surface of the substrate which is opposite to the cleansing surface.
- 125. The article of claim 118 wherein the nonwoven substrate consists essentially of fibers.
- 126. The article of claim 118 wherein the lathering surfactant is present in an amount of from about 10% to about 250% by weight of the surfactant.
- 127. The article of claim 118 wherein the lathering surfactant is present in an amount of from about 0.5% to about 12.5% by weight of the surfactant.
- 128. The article according to claim 118 wherein the lathering surfactant is selected from the group consisting of anionic lathering surfactants, nonionic lathering surfactants, amphoteric lathering surfactants, and mixtures thereof.
- 129. The article according to claim 128 wherein the lathering surfactant is comprised of one or more anionic lathering surfactants and one or more amphoteric lathering surfactants.
- 130. The article according to claim 118 wherein the article is contained within a package which provides instructions on cleansing the face with the substrate.
- 131. The article according to claim 118 further comprising an optional component selected from the group consisting of abrasives, absorbents, anticaking agents, antioxidants, vitamins, binders, biological additives, buffering agents, bulking agents, chelating agents, chemical additives, colorants, cosmetic astringents, cosmetic biocides, denaturants, drug astringents, external analgesics, film formers, fragrance components, humectants, opacifying agents, pH adjusters, preservatives, propellants, reducing agents, skin bleaching agents, sunscreening agents, fragrances, pigments, colorings, essential oils, skin sensates, astringents, skin soothing agents, skin healing agents, and combinations thereof.
- 132. The article according to claim 118 wherein at least a portion of the apertured substrate is wet extensible.
- 133. The article according to claim 118 wherein the substrate is hydroentangled.
- 134. The article according to claim 118 wherein the substrate is comprised of rayon, polyester, or mixtures thereof.
- 135. The article according to claim 118 wherein the substrate comprises a latex binder.
- 136. The article to claim 118 wherein the substrate has a basis weight of from about 42 to about 78 gsm.
- 137. The article according to claim 118 wherein the cleansing surface area is from about 150 to about 400 cm2.
- 138. The article according to claim 118 wherein the thickness of the substrate is from about 5 to about 250 mil.
- 139. The article according to claim 118 wherein the substrate is a nonwoven made by a hydroentanglement process, a thermally bonding or themo-bonding process, or a combination of such processes.
- 140. The article according to claim 118 wherein the apertures of the substrate are substantially uniform in both size and shape.
- 141. The article according to claim 118 wherein the apertures comprise from about 15 to about 75% of the total surface of the substrate.
- 142. The article according to claim 118 wherein the substrate has a peak load wet burst strength of from about 500 to about 600 grams per ply.
- 143. The article according to claim 118 wherein the apertures are hydroapertured.
- 144. The article according to claim 118 wherein the article comprises greater than about 10% by weight of water.
- 145. A disposable, single use personal cleansing article especially useful for cleansing skin or hair, which article comprises:(a) a water insoluble nonwoven substrate comprised of fibers having at least one cleansing surface, wherein the cleansing surface of said substrate contains a plurality of apertures which range in size from about 1.5 to 4 mm in diameter and which are located within said cleansing surface of said subtrate at a frequency of from about 2 to about 8 per linear centimeter; and (b) from about 0.5% to about 250% by weight of said substrate of a lathering surfactant releasably associated with said substrate.
- 146. The article of claim 145 wherein the article is capable of generating an Average Lather Volume of greater than or equal to about 75 ml upon wetting.
- 147. The article of claim 146 wherein the substrate is hydroentangled.
- 148. The article of claim 147 wherein th apertures are uniformly distributed on the cleansing surface of the substrate.
- 149. The article of claim 148 wherein the lathering surfactant is present in an amount of from about 1% to about 250% by weight of the substrate.
- 150. The article of claim 149 wherein the article comprises from about 0.01% to about 99% of a conditioning agent.
- 151. The article of claim 150 which has a basis weight of from about 42 to about 78 grams.
- 152. The article of claim 151 wherein the cleansing surface is form about 150 to about 400 cm2.
- 153. The article of claim 152 wherein the thickness of th substrate is from about 5 to about 250 mil.
- 154. The article of claim 153 wherein the apertures are hydroapertured.
- 155. The article of claim 154 wherein the aperture of the substrate are substantially uniform in both size and shape.
- 156. The article of claim 155 wherein the substrate comprises a latex binder.
- 157. The article of claim 156 wherein the wet caliper to dry caliper ratio of the article is greater than about 14.
- 158. The article of claim 157 wherein the weight ratio of the lathering surfactant to conditioning component is less than about 40:1.
- 159. The article of of claim 157 wherein the surfactant comprises an anionic surfactant selected from the group consisting of sodium lauroyl sarcosinate, ammonium lauryol sarcosinate, potassium lauroyl sarcosinate and mixtures thereof and an amphoteric surfactant comprising a betaine surfactant.
- 160. The article of claim 157 which from about 0.5% to about 12.5% by weight of said substrate of a lathering surfactant releasably associated with said substrate.
- 161. The article of claim 160 which generates an Average Lather Volume of greater than or equal to about 90 ml up wetting.

This application is a divisional of copending U.S. patent application Ser. No. 09/318,676, filed May 25, 1999, now U.S. Pat.
