Claims
- 1. A microcontroller clocking system comprising:
- an input to accept a crystal controlled oscillator;
- a means for said microcontroller to accept a stop signal;
- a second oscillator separate from said crystal oscillator for providing a clock signal to said microcontroller in response to the receipt of said stop signal for a period of time after the removal of said stop signal.
- 2. A system as in claim 1 wherein said second oscillator is a ring oscillator.
- 3. A system as in claim 2 wherein said ring oscillator frequency is preprogrammed and trimmed using digital values with the digital trimmed value being stored as bits in a non-volatile RAM.
- 4. A system as in claim 2 wherein said ring oscillator frequency is preprogrammed and trimmed using digital values with the digital trimmed value being stored as bits in an EPROM.
- 5. A system as in claim 2 wherein said ring oscillator further comprises:
- a temperature compensation circuit.
- 6. A system as in claim 2 wherein said ring oscillator further comprises:
- a voltage compensation circuit.
- 7. A system as in claim 1 wherein said second oscillator is an oscillator that provides a clock signal as soon as power is supplied thereto.
- 8. A system as in claim 1 wherein the so supplied crystal controlled oscillator is supplied to said microcontroller after said period of time from the removal of the stop signal.
- 9. A system as in claim 8 wherein said period of time is programmable.
- 10. A system as in claim 8 wherein said period of time is greater than a time period necessary for the crystal oscillator to stabilize after a restarting thereof.
