Claims
- 1. A method of cutting limp sheet material with a controlled cutting machine having a cantilever-mounted, reciprocated cutting blade with a sharp knife edge comprising:
- generating fundamental machine command signals for translating the cutting blade and the limp sheet material relative to one another along a predetermined cutting path with the cutting blade in cutting engagement with the sheet material;
- sensing lateral loads applied to the cutting blade by the limp sheet material engaging the sides of the blade with a force sensor as the blade and material translate relative to one another in cutting engagement;
- generating additional signals representative of the sensed lateral loads from the material; and
- controlling the orientation of the cutting blade about an axis perpendicular to the sheet material and relative to the predetermined cutting path with the additional signals as the blade and material translate relative to one another along the path to cause the sensed lateral loads applied by the material to be reduced toward zero.
- 2. A method of cutting sheet material as defined in claim 1 including the additional steps of generating a reduced feed rate signal from the sensed loads and additionally controlling the rate of relative movement of the tool and material along the cutting path at a reduced feed rate in accordance with the reduced feed rate signal.
- 3. A method of cutting sheet material as defined in claim 1 wherein:
- the step of generating fundamental machine command signals includes generating blade orientation command signals for rotating the cutting blade about the axis perpendicular to the material to orient the blade relative to the cutting path at each point of the path; and
- the step of controlling blade orientation with the additional signals comprises modifying the blade orientation commands in accordance with the additional signals generated from the sensed forces to direct the cutting blade toward the side of the cutting path from which the sensed forces are applied.
- 4. A method of cutting sheet material as defined in claim 1 wherein:
- the step of sensing comprises sensing side forces applied to the blade by the sheet material through the blade.
- 5. A method as defined in claim 1 wherein an additional sensing step includes detecting the rate at which the cutting blade is rotated about the perpendicular axis by the additional signals as lateral loads are sensed, and an additional controlling step comprises reducing the speed at which the blade and the material translate relative to one another as a function of the detected rate of blade rotation.
- 6. A method of cutting sheet material as defined in claim 1 wherein:
- the step of generating fundamental machine commands includes generating displacement signals which determine the amount and the speed of relative movement of the blade and the sheet material relative to one another along the cutting path;
- an additional step of sensing comprises sensing forces applied rearwardly to the cutting blade by the sheet material as the blade and material are advanced; and
- an additional step of controlling comprises changing the speed of advancement of the blade and material as a function of the sensed rearward forces.
- 7. A method of cutting as defined in claim 6 wherein the step of changing includes reducing the speed of advancement when the rearward forces exceed a preselected force level.
- 8. A method of cutting as defined in claim 6 wherein the step of changing includes reducing the speed of advancement when the rearward forces fall below a preselected force level.
- 9. A method of cutting sheet material as described in claim 1 wherein:
- an additional step of sensing includes sensing the force of the material rearwardly against the advancing blade; and
- an additional step comprises producing a dull-tool signal when the rearward forces exceed a given level.
- 10. A method of cutting sheet material as defined in claim 1 further including the steps of spreading the sheet material in a multi-ply layup for cutting and evacuating air from the layup to compress and rigidize the material to more accurately detect the loads.
- 11. A method of cutting sheet material as defined in claim 4 wherein the force sensor is coupled with the blade.
- 12. A method of cutting sheet material as defined in claim 11 wherein the cantilevered blade is held in a resiliently mounted guide and the sensor is coupled to the blade through the guide for sensing the lateral forces.
