Claims
- 1. In a wireless communication system supporting data transmissions, the wireless communication system having a plurality of base stations, a method for determining reverse link transmission rate at a mobile station comprising:
transmitting data at a first transmission rate; receiving a busy signal from each of a first set of the plurality of base stations; and if any of the received busy signals indicates capacity loading on the reverse link, stochastically reducing the first transmission rate to a second transmission rate.
- 2. The method as in claim 1, further comprising:
if all of the received busy signals indicate additional capacity on the reverse link, stochastically increasing the first transmission rate to a second transmission rate.
- 3. In a wireless communication system supporting data transmissions, the wireless communication system having a plurality of base stations, a method for determining reverse link transmission rate at a mobile station comprising:
transmitting data at a first transmission rate; receiving a busy signal from each of a first set of the plurality of base stations; and if all of the received busy signals indicate additional capacity on the reverse link, stochastically increasing the first transmission rate to a second transmission rate.
- 4. The method as in claim 3, further comprising:
if any of the received busy signals indicates capacity loading, stochastically reducing the first transmission rate to a second transmission rate.
- 5. In a wireless communication system supporting data transmissions, the wireless communication system having a plurality of base stations, a mobile station comprising:
means for transmitting data at a first transmission rate on a reverse link; means for receiving a busy signal from each of a first set of the plurality of base stations; and means for stochastically reducing the first transmission rate to a second transmission rate if any of the received busy signals indicates capacity loading.
- 6. The mobile station as in claim 5, further comprising:
means for stochastically increasing the first transmission rate to a second transmission rate if all of the received busy signals indicate additional capacity on the reverse link.
- 7. In a wireless communication system supporting data transmissions, the wireless communication system having a plurality of base stations, a mobile station comprising:
means for transmitting data at a first transmission rate on the reverse link; means for receiving a busy signal from each of a first set of the plurality of base stations; and means for stochastically increasing the first transmission rate to a second transmission rate if all of the received busy signals indicate additional capacity on the reverse link.
- 8. The mobile station as in claim 7, further comprising:
means for stochastically reducing the first transmission rate to a second transmission rate if any of the received busy signals indicates capacity loading.
- 9. A base station comprising:
means of measuring reverse link loading; and means for transmitting a busy tone signal indicative of said reverse link loading.
- 10. The base station of claim 9 wherein said busy tone signal is transmitted as a two bit number and wherein
(0,0) indicates a scarcely loaded base station; (0,1) indicates a stable base station; (1,0) indicates a heavily loaded base station; and (1,1) indicates a base station overload condition.
- 11. The base station of claim 10 wherein said base station is a CDMA base station.
- 12. The base station of claim 11 wherein busy tone signal is time multiplexed into a CDMA signal.
- 13. The base station of claim 10 wherein said base station is further for transmitting a signal indicative of a maximum permissible reverse link transmission rate.
- 14. A method for determining reverse link transmission rate at an access terminal, comprising:
initializing a current rate limit to a first rate limit value; receiving a message indicating a second rate limit value; comparing the second rate limit value to the first rate limit value; if the second rate limit value is less than or equal to the first rate limit value:
storing the second rate limit value as the current rate limit; and if the second rate limit value is greater than the first rate limit value:
maintaining the first rate limit value as the current rate limit for one frame after receiving the message; and storing the second rate limit value as the current rate limit.
- 15. The method as in claim 14, wherein initializing the current rate limit comprises:
if the access terminal is transmitting data at a transmission rate, the first rate limit value is the transmission rate; and if the access terminal is not transmitting data, the first rate limit value is zero.
