Claims
- 1. A urinary catheter system for delivering irrigation fluid into a patient comprising: An indwelling urinary catheter having a distal end adapted to reside within the bladder of a patient and a proximal end adapted to reside outside the body of the patient, a fluid passageway transversing between the distal end and the proximal end, a closed system irrigation connector attached to the proximal end of the urinary catheter, the connector including a lower fluid communication path, an upper entrance port, and a valve positioned between the lower fluid communication path and the upper entrance port, the lower fluid communication path in fluid communication with the catheter fluid passageway, the valve positioned in a normally biased sealed closed first position thereby preventing fluid from exiting the lower fluid communication path and out the valve, the valve adapted to be positioned to an open second position by the direct manual engagement of the catheter tip portion of an irrigation syringe with the upper entrance port to provide irrigation fluid to flow into the lower fluid communication path and on into the catheter passageway to deliver irrigation fluid into the bladder, the valve automatically returning to its positioned normally biased sealed closed first position upon manual disengagement of the catheter tip irrigation syringe from the upper entrance port.
- 2. The urinary catheter system of claim 1 wherein the urinary catheter is a 3-way urinary foley type catheter.
- 3. The urinary catheter system of claim 1 wherein the urinary catheter is a 2-way urinary foley type catheter.
- 4. The system of claim 1 wherein the catheter tip of said irrigation syringe has a tapered outer surface and the upper entrance port has a tapered inner surface wherein said irrigation syringe catheter tip forms a sealing engagement with the upper entrance port.
- 5. The system of claim 4 wherein the inner surface of the upper entrance port is tapered at approximately 4-½° and wherein the catheter tip irrigation syringe forms a tapered wedge lock engagement with the upper entrance port.
- 6. The system of claim 1 wherein the valve is a molded part.
- 7. The system of claim 1 wherein the valve is a diaphragm slit type valve.
- 8. The urinary catheter system of claim 1 wherein the closed system irrigation connector is pre-connected to a urinary drainage bag tubing line.
- 9. The urinary catheter system of claim 1 wherein the closed system irrigation connector is pre-connected to a urinary catheter.
- 10. The urinary catheter system of claim 1 wherein the closed system irrigation connector is pre-connected to both a urinary catheter and a urinary drainage bag tubing line.
- 11. The urinary catheter system of claim 1 wherein the closed system irrigation connector is a separate component attachable to the proximal end of the urinary catheter.
- 12. The urinary catheter system of claim 1 wherein the closed system irrigation connector is used both as a means for delivering closed system irrigation as well as urine sampling.
- 13. The urinary catheter system of claim 1 wherein the closed system irrigation connector provides both irrigation into the bladder as well as aspiration out of the bladder.
- 14. A closed system irrigation connector for use with a urinary catheter, the connector adapted to accept either a continuous irrigation set or a catheter tip irrigation syringe for delivering irrigation fluid into the urinary catheter, the connector having a lower fluid communication path, an upper entrance port, and a valve positioned between the lower fluid communication path and the upper entrance port, the valve positioned in a normally biased sealed closed first position, the valve adapted to be positioned to an open second position by the direct manual sealing engagement of either the continuous irrigation set or a catheter tip irrigation syringe into the upper entrance port, the valve automatically returning to its positioned normally biased sealed closed first position upon direct manual unsealing disengagement of either the continuous irrigation set or the catheter tip syringe.
- 15. The closed system irrigation connector of claim 14 wherein the connector is part of the urinary catheter.
- 16. The closed system irrigation connector of claim 14 wherein the connector is a separate component inserted into the urinary catheter.
- 17. The closed system irrigation connector of claim 14 wherein the urinary catheter is a 3-way urinary catheter.
- 18. The closed system irrigation connector of claim 14 wherein the urinary catheter is a 2-way urinary catheter.
- 19. The closed system irrigation connector of claim 14 wherein the connector includes a universal continuous irrigation set adapter.
- 20. The closed system irrigation connector of claim 14 wherein the continuous irrigation set or the catheter tip irrigation syringe forms a tapered sealing engagement with the upper entrance port.
- 21. The closed system irrigation connector of claim 14 wherein the continuous irrigation set or the catheter tip irrigation syringe forms a wedge lock engagement with the upper entrance port.
- 22. The closed system irrigation connector of claim 14 wherein the valve is a molded part.
- 23. The closed system irrigation connector of claim 14 wherein the valve is a diaphragm slit type valve.
- 24. A method of delivering either continuous or intermittent catheter tip syringe irrigation fluid into a urinary catheter having a closed system irrigation connector with a normally self biased closed positioned valve with an upper entrance port comprising the following steps of: directly manually engaging the dispensing projection portion of a device including a continuous irrigation set or a tapered catheter tip irrigation syringe into the upper entrance port so as to form a sealing engagement between said projection portion and said upper entrance port and to additionally engage the valve with said projection to cause the valve to open, next infusing irrigation fluid from the projection portion into the urinary catheter, then manually disengaging either the projection portion from the upper entrance port sealing engagement to cause the valve to automatically return to its normally self biased closed position when delivery of irrigation fluid into the urinary catheter is completed.
- 25. The method of claim 24 wherein the urinary catheter used is a 3-way catheter.
- 26. The method of claim 24 wherein the urinary catheter used is a 2-way catheter.
- 27. The method of claim 24 wherein the urinary catheter used is a suprapubic catheter.
