Claims
- 1. A method for protecting a pipeline comprising the steps of:
- (a) wrapping a heat-shrinkable film around the surface of a portion of pipeline;
- (b) overlapping the longitudinal edges of the heat-shrinkable film;
- (c) applying a closure device comprising:
- (i) a polyimide backing layer;
- (ii) a silicone based adhesive applied to one surface of said backing layer; and
- (iii) a polyolefinic heat-shrinkable film dimensionally smaller than said silicone adhesive layer, applied to said adhesive layer so as to maintain a peripheral area of exposed silicone adhesive;
- over the overlapped edges of the heat shrinkable film;
- (d) applying heat to said closure until said closure heat-shrinkable film and the underlying heat shrinkable film are fused together.
- 2. A method for protecting a pipeline comprising the steps
- (a) wrapping a heat-shrinkable film around the surface of a portion of pipeline;
- (b) overlapping the longitudinal edges of the heat-shrinkable film;
- (c) applying a closure device comprising:
- (i) A 0.5-5 mil thick high temperature resistant, flame-resistant and dimensionally stable backing layer;
- (ii) a 0.5-3 mil thick crosslinked, high temperature-resistant, shear-resistant, and flame-resistant pressure sensitive adhesive applied to one surface of said backing layer; and
- (iii) a 10-30 mil thick heat-shrinkable film dimensionally smaller than said pressure sensitive adhesive layer applied to said pressure sensitive adhesive layer so as to maintain a peripheral area of exposed pressure sensitive adhesive;
- over the overlapped edges of the heat-shrinkable film;
- (d) applying heat to said closure until said closure heat-shrinkable film and the underlying heat shrinkable film are fused together.
- 3. A method for protecting a pipeline comprising the steps of:
- (a) wrapping a heat-shrinkable film around the surface of a portion of pipeline
- (b) overlapping the longitudinal edges of the heat-shrinkable film;
- (c) applying a closure device comprising:
- (i) a high temperature-resistant, flame-resistant, and dimensionally stable backing layer;
- (ii) a crosslinked, high temperature-resistant, shear-resistant, and flame resistant, pressure sensitive adhesive applied to one surface of said backing layer; and
- (iii) a heat-shrinkable film dimensionally smaller than said pressure sensitive adhesive layer applied to said pressure sensitive adhesive layer so as to maintain a peripheral area of exposed pressure sensitive adhesive;
- over the overlapped edges of the heat-shrinkable film;
- (d) heating the closure device at a temperature sufficient to allow for fusion between the closure device and the heat-shrinkable film.
- 4. The method as described in claim 3, further comprising a release sheet dimensionally larger than said backing layer and applied to cover the exposed adhesive containing areas prior to application.
- 5. The method as described in claim 3, wherein the heat-shrinkable film is a polyolefin.
- 6. The method as described in claim 5, wherein said polyolefin is polyethylene.
- 7. The method as described in claim 3, wherein said backing layer is selected from the group of high temperature-resistant materials consisting of polyimide aluminum foil, Kevlar fabric, fiberglass fabric, laminates of fiberglass fabric with aluminum foil, and flame-resistant cotton.
- 8. The method as described in claim 7, wherein said backing layer is polyimide.
- 9. The method as described in claim 3, wherein the pressure-sensitive adhesive is a silicone-based adhesive.
