Claims
- 1. A double containment pipe connection comprising:an inner primary pipe and an outer secondary pipe with a fluid passage between the pipes, wherein an end portion of the secondary pipe has a reduced outer diameter forming an annular lip; a fitting including an inner tube and an outer tube with a fluid passage between the tubes; an intermediate diameter portion adjacent to the end of the outer tube of the fitting having a diameter intermediate between the inside diameter and the outside diameter of the outer tube, the intermediate diameter portion comprising a cylindrical surface; a sealing reducer comprising: a smaller diameter end having an inside diameter sufficiently larger than the outside diameter of the outer secondary pipe to slide over the outside of the outer secondary pipe, and a larger diameter end having an inside diameter sufficiently larger than the outside diameter of the inner tube to permit fluid flow therebetween; a first seal between the smaller diameter end of the reducer and the outside of the outer secondary pipe; a second seal between the larger diameter end of the reducer and the intermediate diameter portion of outer tube of the fitting, the second seal comprising an adhesive cement between the outside of the outer secondary pipe and the inside of the smaller diameter end of the reducer; and a split ring positioned around the annular lip of the secondary pipe and adhered to the secondary pipe with an adhesive cement, wherein the split ring has a thickness approximately equal to difference between the outside diameter of the annular lip and outside diameter of the secondary pipe adjacent the annular lip, and wherein the second seal comprises an adhesive cement between the outside of the split ring and the inside of the smaller diameter end of the reducer.
- 2. A double containment pipe connection according to claim 1 whereinthe intermediate diameter portion comprises a thread on an inside surface of outer tube, and the second seal comprises an elastomeric ring having an inside diameter sufficiently larger than the outside diameter of the inner tube to permit fluid flow therebetween; and further comprising: a thread on the reducer for compressing the second seal between the reducer and the outer tube.
- 3. A double containment pipe connection according to claim 2 further comprisinga male thread on the smaller diameter end of the reducer, and a nut threaded onto the male thread on the smaller diameter end; and wherein the first seal comprises an elastomeric ring between the smaller diameter end of the reducer, the inside of the nut and bearing against the outside of the outer secondary pipe.
- 4. A double containment pipe connection according to claim 1 whereinthe first seal comprises an adhesive cement between the outside of the outer secondary pipe and the inside of the smaller diameter end of the reducer.
- 5. A double containment pipe connection comprising:an inner primary pipe and an outer secondary pipe with a fluid passage between the pipes wherein an end portion of the secondary pipe has a reduced outer diameter forming an annular lip; a fitting including an inner tube and an outer tube with a fluid passage between the tubes; an intermediate diameter portion adjacent to the end of the outer tube of the fitting having a diameter intermediate between the inside diameter and the outside diameter of the outer tube, the intermediate diameter portion comprising a cylindrical surface; a sealing reducer comprising: a smaller diameter end having an inside diameter sufficiently larger than the outside diameter of the outer secondary pipe to slide over the outside of the outer secondary pipe, and a larger diameter end having an inside diameter sufficiently larger than the outside diameter of the inner tube to permit fluid flow therebetween; a first seal between the smaller diameter end of the reducer and the outside of the outer secondary pipe; and a second seal between the larger diameter end of the reducer and the intermediate diameter portion of outer tube of the fitting, the second seal comprising an adhesive cement between the outside of the outer secondary pipe and the inside of the smaller diameter end of the reducer; and a pair of complementary wedges, which together form an annular ring, positioned around the annular lip of the secondary pipe and adhered to the secondary pipe with an adhesive cement, wherein the wedges each have a thickness approximately equal to difference between the outside diameter of the annular lip and outside diameter of the secondary pipe adjacent the annular lip, and wherein the second seal comprises an adhesive cement between the outside of the wedges and the inside of the smaller diameter end of the reducer.
- 6. A double containment pipe connection according to claim 5 further comprising a second pair of complementary wedges, which together form an annular ring, positioned around the intermediate diameter portion of the outer tube of the fitting and adhered to the outer tube with an adhesive cement,wherein the second pair of wedges each have a thickness approximately equal to difference between the diameter of the intermediate diameter portion and the outside diameter of the outer tube adjacent the intermediate diameter portion, and wherein the first seal comprises an adhesive cement between the outside of the wedges and the inside of the larger diameter end of the reducer.
- 7. A double containment joint comprising:a first annular fitting comprising an inner annular member, having first and second ends, within an outer annular member forming an annulus there between; a double containment pipe comprising, a secondary pipe, and a primary pipe within the secondary pipe forming an annulus there between wherein the primary pipe comprises a section extending beyond an end of the secondary pipe, wherein a portion of the section has its outer surface bonded to an inner surface of the inner annular member; a second annular fitting comprising a first end and a second end, wherein the first end of the second annular fitting is fitted around the secondary pipe, and wherein the second annular fitting is threaded to the outer annular member second end; a nut fitted over the secondary pipe and threaded to the first end of the second annular fitting, wherein the second annular fitting first end comprises a threaded outer surface, wherein the nut comprises a threaded inner surface threaded to the threaded outer surface of the second annular fitting, and wherein the nut further comprises, a first annular section having an inner diameter slightly greater than the outer diameter of the secondary pipe, and a second annular section coaxial with the first annular section and having an inner diameter greater than the inner diameter of the first annular section defining an annular shoulder on the first annular section, wherein the nut threaded inner surface is formed on the inner surface of the second annular section, and wherein a seal is bounded by the second annular fitting first end, the inner surface of the nut second annular section, the annular shoulder and the outer surface of the secondary pipe; and said seal in surrounding contact with the secondary pipe and sandwiched between the second annular fitting and the nut, wherein at least a portion of the annular shoulder forms a taper extending radially outward and toward the second annular fitting first end for contacting the seal and urging it toward the secondary pipe outer surface.
- 8. A joint as recited in claim 7 wherein the outer annular member comprises an inner surface comprising threads.
- 9. A joint as recited in claim 7 wherein the outer annular member comprises an outer surface comprising threads.
- 10. A joint as recited in claim 7 further comprising a second seal sandwiched between the second annular fitting and the outer annular member.
- 11. A double containment joint comprising:a first annular fitting comprising an inner annular member, having first and second ends, within an outer annular member forming an annulus there between; a double containment pipe comprising, a secondary pipe, and a primary pipe within the secondary pipe forming an annulus there between wherein the primary pipe comprises a section extending beyond an end of the secondary pipe, wherein a portion of the section has its outer surface bonded to an inner surface of the inner annular member; a second annular fitting comprising a first end and a second end, wherein the first end of the second annular fitting is fitted around the secondary pipe, and wherein the second annular fitting is threaded to the outer annular member second end; a nut fitted over the secondary pipe and threaded to the first end of the second annular fitting; and a seal in surrounding contact with the secondary pipe and sandwiched between the second annular fitting and the nut, wherein the section of the primary pipe extending beyond the secondary pipe comprises an end portion having an outer surface, wherein the end portion outer surface tapers radially inward in an axial direction away from the secondary pipe forming a taper, and wherein the inner surface of the inner coupling bonded to the pipe section is tapered forming a taper complementary to the taper of the pipe section end portion.
- 12. A joint as recited in claim 11 wherein the second annular fitting defines a flow path between the annulus of the first fitting and the annulus of the double containment pipe.
- 13. A joint as recited in claim 12 wherein the second annular fitting first end has an inner surface diameter smaller than the diameter of the inner surface of the second annular fitting second end.
- 14. A double containment joint comprising:a first annular fitting comprising an inner annular member, having first and second ends, within an outer annular member forming an annulus there between; a double containment pipe comprising, a secondary pipe, and a primary pipe within the secondary pipe forming an annulus there between wherein the primary pipe comprises a section extending beyond an end of the secondary pipe, wherein a portion of the section has its outer surface bonded to an inner surface of the inner annular member; a second annular fitting comprising a first end and a second end, wherein the first end of the second annular fitting is fitted around the secondary pipe, and wherein the second annular fitting is threaded to the outer annular member second end; a nut fitted over the secondary pipe and threaded to the first end of the second annular fitting, the nut comprising, a first annular section having an inner diameter slightly greater than the outer diameter of the secondary pipe, and a second annular section coaxial with the first annular section and having an inner diameter greater than the inner diameter of the first annular section defining an annular shoulder on the first annular section, wherein the nut threaded inner surface is formed on the inner surface of the second annular section, the annular shoulder and the outer surface of the second pipe; and a seal in surrounding contact with the secondary pipe and sandwiched between the second annular fitting and the nut, wherein the seal is bounded by the second annular fitting first end, the inner surface of the nut second annular section, wherein the second annular fitting first end comprises a threaded outer surface, wherein the nut comprises a threaded inner surface threaded to the threaded outer surface of the second annular fitting, and wherein at least a portion of the annular shoulder forms a taper extending radially outward and toward the second annular fitting second end for contacting the seal and urging it toward the secondary pipe outer surface.
- 15. A double containment joint comprising:a first annular fitting comprising an inner annular member having first and second ends, within an outer annular member forming an annulus there between; a double containment pipe comprising, a secondary pipe, and a primary pipe within the secondary pipe forming an annulus there between wherein the primary pipe comprises a section extending beyond an end of the secondary pipe, wherein a portion of the section has its outer surface bonded to an inner surface of the inner annular member; a second annular fitting comprising a first end and a second end, wherein the first end of the second annular fitting is fitted around the secondary pipe, and wherein the second annular fitting is threaded to the outer annular member second end; a nut fitted over the secondary pipe and threaded to the first end of the second annular fitting; and a seal in surrounding contact with the secondary pipe and sandwiched between the second annular fitting and the nut, wherein the section of the primary pipe extending beyond the secondary pipe comprises an end portion having an outer surface, wherein the end portion outer surface tapers radially inward in an axial direction away from the secondary pipe forming a taper, and wherein the inner surface of the inner coupling bonded to the pipe section is tapered forming a taper complementary to the taper of the pipe section end portion.
