Claims
- 1. In a closure unit of the type having a sash member with central glazing area, wherein one side of the sash member is designated as the exterior face and the opposite side is designated as the interior face, the central glazing area is bounded by an inner perimetric face of the sash member, and the sash member also is bounded by an outer perimetric face, the improved construction of the sash member comprising:
- a cellulosic core;
- an outer coating of synthetic plastic material attached to said core and covering substantial portions thereof from external exposure; and
- a metal cladding substantially entirely defining the exterior face of said sash member to protect said synthetic coating from ultraviolet degradation;
- wherein the coating of synthetic plastic material forms a unitary structure with the cellulosic core and metal cladding.
- 2. The closure unit of claim 1, wherein said cellulosic core of the sash member defines a closed rectangle at the inner perimetric face for receiving glazing materials.
- 3. The closure unit of claim 2, wherein said inner perimetric face of the sash member defines a glazing material retaining ledger near the interior race, a glazing strip retaining slot near the exterior face, and a glazing material support area intermediate said ledge and slot, wherein said cellulosic core provides a substantial portion of the surface area of said glazing support area.
- 4. The closure unit of claim 1, wherein said sash member comprises:
- a glazing strip reception slot; and
- a weather strip reception slot;
- the slots being defined at least partially by a channel-shaped contour of said metal cladding.
- 5. The closure unit of claim 4, wherein said metal cladding comprises:
- an exterior wall substantially entirely defining the surface of said exterior face of said sash member;
- an inner perimetric wall defining the surface of said inner perimetric face of the sash member between the exterior face and said glazing strip reception slot; and
- an outer perimetric wall defining at least a portion of the surface of said outer perimetric face of the sash member adjacent to the exterior face thereof.
- 6. The closure unit of claim 5, wherein said portion of the metal cladding defining the weather strip reception slot is at the outer perimetric face of the sash member.
- 7. The closure unit of claim 1, wherein said metal cladding defines first and second channels, one channel being at each of the opposite perimetric edges thereof such that said first channel is positioned at an inner perimeter of the sash member to receive glazing strip and said second channel is positioned on the outer perimeter of the sash member to receive weatherstrip.
- 8. The closure unit of claim 1, wherein the sash member is constructed from elements comprising:
- a stile;
- an inside check rail opposite said stile; and
- first and second rails spaced apart from each other on opposite sides of said central glazing area;
- wherein said metal cladding covers the external surface of the stile and of the first and second rails; and
- an external surface of said inside check rail is formed of an unclad synthetic plastic material.
- 9. The closure unit of claim 1, wherein the sash member is constructed from elements comprising:
- a stile;
- an outside check rail opposite said stile; and
- first and second rails spaced apart from each other on opposite sides of said central glazing area;
- wherein said metal cladding covers an exterior face of each of said elements.
- 10. The closure unit of claim 1, wherein the inner perimetric face of said sash member comprises:
- a glazing support area having a glazing strip receiving slot formed at the exterior edge of said glazing support area; and
- wherein a face of said cellulosic core is exposed at the glazing support area and juxtaposed to said glazing strip receiving slot at an interior side of the glazing strip receiving slot.
- 11. The closure unit of claim 1, wherein said outer coating of synthetic plastic material comprises polyurethane having bonded attachment to said cellulosic core and to said metal cladding.
- 12. The closure unit of claim 1, wherein said metal cladding comprises, in transverse cross-section;
- a first cladding portion defining an exterior wall surface of said sash member,
- said first cladding portion joined at an edge next adjacent to said inner perimetric face of the sash member to a second cladding portion defining a partial inner perimeter wall surface,
- said second cladding portion joined at an edge opposite from the junction to the first cladding portion to a channel that depends toward said outer perimetric face of the sash member, and
- the first cladding portion joined at an edge next adjacent to said outer perimetric face of the sash member to a third cladding portion defining a partial outer perimeter wall surface,
- said third cladding portion further defining an inset wall portion, and
- said inset wall portion joined at an edge opposite from the junction to the first cladding portion to a channel that depends toward the inner perimetric face of the sash member.
