Claims
- 1. A method for producing a directly compressible and highly compactible composition, said method comprising:
a) dissolving mannitol powder and sorbitol powder into a solution; b) drying the solution in an air stream, and c) forming particles having a nonfilamentous microstructure from the solution.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the moisture content of said composition is less than about 8%.
- 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the moisture content of said composition is less than about 5%.
- 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the moisture content of said composition is less than about 2%.
- 5. The method of claim 1, further comprising adding a disintegrant to the composition.
- 6. The method of claim 5, wherein the disintegrant is selected from the group consisting of crospovidone, croscarmellose, sodium starch glycolate, and combinations thereof.
- 7. The method of claim 5, further comprising adding a glidant to the composition.
- 8. The method of claim 7, wherein the glidant is selected from the group consisting of colloidal silica, silica gel, precipitated silica, and combinations thereof.
- 9. The method of claim 1, further comprising adding an active ingredient.
- 10. The method of claim 1, wherein said mannitol is present in a range of 60 to 99.5 percent and said sorbitol is present in a range of 0.5 to 40 percent.
- 11. The method of claim 10, wherein said mannitol is present in a range of 70 to 95 percent and said sorbitol is present in a range of 5 to 30 percent.
- 12. The method of claim 11, wherein said mannitol is present in a range of 80 to 90 percent and said sorbitol is present in a range of 10 to 20 percent.
- 13. The method of claim 1, further comprising in said step (b) dry feeding a blend of dry mannitol powder and dry sorbitol powder into the spray drying chamber.
- 14. The method of claim 1, further comprising diluting the resulting composition with a dry mixture of mannitol and a disintegrant.
- 15. The method of claim 14, wherein said mixture comprises about 90% mannitol and about 10% crospovidone.
- 16. The method of claim 1, further comprising forming a tablet.
- 17. A quick-dissolving composition comprising co-spray-dried mannitol and sorbitol, and a disintegrant, wherein said composition is highly compactible and dissolves in the oral cavity in less than 60 seconds.
- 18. The composition of claim 17, further comprising a glidant.
- 19. The composition of claim 17, wherein said disintegrant is selected from the group consisting of crospovidone, croscarmellose, sodium starch glycolate, and combinations thereof.
- 20. The composition of claim 18, wherein said glidant is selected from group consisting of colloidal silica, silica gel, precipitated silica, and combinations thereof.
- 21. The composition of claim 17, wherein said mannitol is present in a range of 60 to 99.5 percent and wherein said sorbitol is present in a range of 0.5 to 40 percent.
- 22. The composition of claim 21, wherein said mannitol is present in a range of 70 to 95 percent and wherein said sorbitol is present in a range of 5 to 30 percent.
- 23. The composition of claim 22, wherein said mannitol is present in a range of 80 to 90 percent and wherein said sorbitol is present in a range of 10 to 20 percent.
- 24. The composition of claim 17, further comprising an active ingredient.
- 25. The composition of claim 24, wherein said active ingredient is coated.
- 26. The composition of claim 24, wherein said active ingredient is uncoated.
- 27. The composition of claim 17, wherein said composition is directly compressible.
- 28. A tablet comprising the composition of claim 17.
- 29. A composition comprising particles including co-spray-dried mannitol and sorbitol, wherein said particles have a nonfilamentous microstructure and said composition is highly compactible.
- 30. The composition of claim 29, further comprising a disintegrant.
- 31. The composition of claim 29, further comprising a glidant.
- 32. The composition of claim 30, wherein said disintegrant is selected from the group consisting of crospovidone, croscarmellose, sodium starch glycolate, and combinations thereof.
- 33. The composition of claim 31, wherein said glidant is selected from group consisting of colloidal silica, silica gel, precipitated silica, and combinations thereof.
- 34. The composition of claim 29, wherein said mannitol is present in a range of 60 to 99.5 percent and wherein said sorbitol is present in a range of 0.5 to 40 percent.
- 35. The composition of claim 34, wherein said mannitol is present in a range of 70 to 95 percent and wherein said sorbitol is present in a range of 5 to 30 percent.
- 36. The composition of claim 35, wherein said mannitol is present in a range of 80 to 90 percent and wherein said sorbitol is present in a range of 10 to 20 percent.
- 37. The composition of claim 29, further comprising an active ingredient.
- 38. The composition of claim 37, wherein said active ingredient is coated.
- 39. The composition of claim 37, wherein said active ingredient is uncoated.
- 40. The composition of claim 29, said composition being directly compressible.
- 41. A tablet comprising the composition of claim 29.
- 42. A method for producing a directly compressible quick-dissolving composition, said method comprising:
a) dissolving mannitol powder and sorbitol powder into a solution; b) drying the solution in an air stream; and c) adding a disintegrant, thereby forming a directly compressible quick-dissolving composition.
- 43. The composition of claim 42, further comprising a glidant.
- 44. The composition of claim 42, wherein said disintegrant is selected from the group consisting of crospovidone, croscarmellose, sodium starch glycolate, and combinations thereof.
- 45. The composition of claim 43, wherein said glidant is selected from group consisting of colloidal silica, silica gel, precipitated silica, and combinations thereof.
- 46. The composition of claim 42, wherein said mannitol is present in a range of 60 to 99.5 percent and wherein said sorbitol is present in a range of 0.5 to 40 percent.
- 47. The composition of claim 46, wherein said mannitol is present in a range of 70 to 95 percent and wherein said sorbitol is present in a range of 5 to 30 percent.
- 48. The composition of claim 47, wherein said mannitol is present in a range of 80 to 90 percent and wherein said sorbitol is present in a range of 10 to 20 percent.
- 49. The composition of claim 42, further comprising an active ingredient.
- 50. The composition of claim 49, wherein said active ingredient is coated.
- 51. The composition of claim 49, wherein said active ingredient is uncoated.
- 52. The composition of claim 42, said composition being directly compressible.
- 53. A tablet comprising the composition of claim 42.
- 54. A composition comprising:
(a) particles including co-spray dried mannitol and sorbitol, wherein the particles have a nonfilamentous microstructure; (b) a disintegrant selected from the group consisting of crospovidone, croscarmellose, sodium starch glycolate, and combinations thereof; (c) a glidant selected from the group consisting of silica gel, colloidal silica, precipitated silica, and combinations thereof; and (d) an active ingredient.
- 55. A quick-dissolving composition comprising:
(a) particles including co-spray dried mannitol and sorbitol; (b) a disintegrant selected from the group consisting of crospovidone, croscarmellose, sodium starch glycolate, and combinations thereof; (c) a glidant selected from the group consisting of silica gel, and colloidal silica, precipitated silica, and combinations thereof; and (d) an active ingredient.
