Claims
- 1. A stabilized coal slurry comprising pulverized and purified coal, water and a dispersing agent, said dispersing agent by selective absorption having produced different charging of particles of coal and particles of other substances to obtain purified coal and maintain the stability of the slurry.
- 2. Composition as claimed in claim 1, wherein the dispersing agent is a polyelectrolyte.
- 3. Composition as claimed in claim 1, wherein the particle size of the pulverized carbon is less than 30 microns.
- 4. Composition as claimed in claim 3, wherein the particle size is less than 10 microns.
- 5. Composition as claimed in claim 1, wherein the pulverized carbon amounts to at most about 80% by weight of the mixture.
- 6. Composition as claimed in claim 5, wherein the carbon amounts to at least about 55% by weight of the mixture.
- 7. Composition as claimed in claim 1, wherein said stabilized coal slurry comprises an amount of dispersing agent effective to deflocculate the particles of coal and to maintain the coal particles in dispersed form in said slurry.
- 8. Composition as claimed in claim 1, wherein said slurry has a pH of at least about 10.
- 9. A method for preparing from a carbonaceous starting material which, in addition to coal, also includes impurities, a stabilized coal slurry containing the coal in pulverized purified form, as well as water and a dispersing agent, wherein the carbonaceous starting material is mixed with water, pulverized and, in connection with or subsequent to pulverization, supplied with a dispersing agent by selective adsorption produces different charging of coal particles and impurity particles, and wherein this different charging is utilized in order to stabilize the coal slurry.
- 10. Method as claimed in claim 9, wherein as dispersing agent there is added a polyelectrolyte.
- 11. Method as claimed in claim 9, wherein the carbonaceous starting material is pulverized to a particle size of less than 30 microns.
- 12. Method as claimed in claim 11, wherein the carbonaceous starting material is pulverized to a particle size of less than 10 microns.
- 13. Method as claimed in claim 9, wherein the separation of carbon and impurities is effected by sedimentation.
- 14. Method as claimed in claim 9, wherein the carbon content prior to separation is at most about 10% by weight.
- 15. Method as claimed in claim 14, wherein the carbon content is raised to at least about 55% after said separation.
- 16. Method as claimed in claim 9, wherein an amount of dispersing agent effective to deflocculate the particles of coal and to maintain the coal particles in dispersed form in the slurry is supplied to the slurry.
- 17. Method as claimed in claim 1, wherein said slurry has a pH of at least about 10.
- 18. A stabilized coal slurry comprising pulverized and purified coal, water, and a dispersing agent, wherein:
- (a) said dispersing agent produces different charging of particles of coal and particles of other substances, to obtain purified coal and maintain the stability of the slurry; and
- (b) from about 5 to about 36 weight percent (by weight of dry coal) of the coal particles in said slurry are of colloidal size, being less than 3 microns in size.
- 19. The coal-water slurry as recited in claim 18, wherein said particles of coal have particle sizes in the range of 1180 microns to 0.05 microns.
- 20. The coal-water slurry as recited in claim 19, wherein said coal-water slurry is comprised of at least 60 weight percent of coal.
- 21. The coal-water slurry as recited in claim 20, wherein said coal-water slurry is comprised of from about 0.05 to about 4.0 weight percent (by weight of dry coal) of water-soluble dispersing agent which, when dissolved in water, provides electrically charged ions.
- 22. The coal-water slurry as recited in claim 21, wherein said coal-water slurry has a Brookfield viscosity at 60 revolutions per minute of less than about 4000 centipoise.
- 23. A stabilized coal slurry comprising pulverized and purified coal, water, and a dispersing agent, wherein:
- (a) said dispersing agent produces different charging of particles of coal and particles of other substances, to obtain purified coal and maintain the stability of the slurry; and
- (b) said coal-water slurry is comprised of at least 60 weight percent of coal.
- 24. The coal-water slurry as recited in claim 23, wherein said particles of coal have particle sizes in the range of 1180 microns to 0.05 microns.
- 25. The coal-water slurry as recited in claim 24, wherein said coal-water slurry is comprised of from about 0.05 to about 4.0 weight percent (by weight of dry coal) of water-soluble dispersing agent which, when dissolved in water, provides electrically charged ions.
- 26. The coal-water slurry as recited in claim 25, wherein said coal-water slurry has a Brookfield viscosity at 60 revolutions per minute of less than about 4000 centipoise.
- 27. The coal-water slurry as recited in claim 26, wherein from about 5 to about 20 weight percent (by weight of dry coal) of the coal particles in said slurry are of colloidal size, being less than 3 microns in size.
- 28. A stabilized coal slurry comprising pulverized and purified coal, water, and a dispersing agent, wherein:
- (a) said dispersing agent produces different charging of particles of coal and particles of other substances, to obtain purified coal and maintain the stability of the slurry; and
- (b) said coal-water slurry has a Brookfield viscosity at 60 revolutions per minute of less than 4000 centipoise.
- 29. The coal-water slurry as recited in claim 28, wherein from about 5 to about 36 weight percent (by weight of dry coal) of the coal particles in said slurry are of colloidal size, being less than 3 microns in size.
- 30. The coal-water slurry as recited in claim 29, wherein said coal-water slurry contains at least about 60 weight percent of coal.
- 31. The coal-water slurry as recited in claim 30, wherein said coal-water slurry is comprised of from about 0.05 to about 4.0 weight percent (by weight of dry coal) of water-soluble dispersing agent which, when dissolved in water, provides electrically charged ions.
- 32. The coal-water slurry as recited in claim 30, wherein said particles of coal have particle sizes in the range of 1180 microns to 0.05 microns.
- 33. A stabilized coal slurry comprising pulverized and purified coal, water, and a dispersing agent, wherein:
- (a) said dispersing agent produces different charging of particles of coal and particles of other substances, to obtain purified coal and maintain the stability of the slurry; and
- (b) said particles of coal have particles sizes in the range of 1180 microns to 0.05 microns.
- 34. The coal-water slurry as recited in claim 33, wherein said coal-water slurry is comprised of from about 0.05 to about 4.0 weight percent (by weight of dry coal) of water-soluble dispersing agent which, when dissolved in water, provides electrically charged ions.
- 35. The coal-water slurry as recited in claim 34, wherein said coal-water slurry has a Brookfield viscosity at 60 revolutions per minute of less than about 4000 centipoise.
- 36. The coal-water slurry as recited in claim 35, wherein from about 5 to about 36 weight percent (by weight of dry coal) of the coal particles in said slurry are of colloidal size, being less than 3 microns in size.
- 37. A stabilized coal slurry comprising pulverized and purified coal, water, and a dispersing agent, wherein:
- (a) said dispersing agent produces different charging of particles of coal and particles of other substances, to obtain purified coal and maintain the stability of the slurry; and
- (b) said coal-water slurry is comprised of from about 0.05 to about 4.0 weight percent (by weight of dry coal) of water-soluble dispersing agent which, when dissolved in water, provides electrically charged ions.
- 38. The coal-water slurry as recited in claim 32, wherein said coal-water slurry is comprised of at least 60 weight percent of coal.
- 39. The coal-water slurry as recited in claim 37, wherein from about 5 to about 36 weight percent (by weight of dry coal) of the coal particles in said slurry are of colloidal size, being less than 3 microns in size.
- 40. The coal-water slurry as recited in claim 37, wherein said coal-water slurry has a Brookfield viscosity at 60 revolutions per minute of less than about 4000 centipoise.
- 41. The coal-water slurry as recited in claim 30, wherein from about 5 to about 20 weight percent (by weight of dry coal) of the coal particles in said slurry are of colloidal size, being less than 3 microns in size.
- 42. The coal-water slurry as recited in claim 41, wherein said slurry contains from about 0 to about 20 weight percent of ash.
- 43. The coal-water slurry as recited in claim 42, wherein said coal-water slurry contains from about 60 to about 80 weight percent of coal.
- 44. The coal-water slurry as recited in claim 43, wherein said particles of coal have particle sizes in the range of 1180 microns to 0.05 microns.
- 45. The coal-water slurry as recited in claim 44, wherein said slurry contains at least about 20 weight percent of water.
- 46. The coal-water slurry as recited in claim 45, wherein said slurry contains from about 0.5 to about 10 weight percent of ash.
- 47. The coal-water slurry as recited in claim 46, wherein said particles of coal have particle sizes in the range from about 0.05 to about 600 microns.
- 48. The coal-water slurry as recited in claim 47, wherein said coal-water slurry is comprised of from about 0.05 to about 4.0 weight percent (by weight of dry coal) of water-soluble dispersing agent which, when dissolved in water, provides electrically charged ions.
- 49. The coal-water slurry as recited in claim 48, wherein said slurry contains from about 65 to about 80 weight percent of coal.
