Claims
- 1. A coated ceramic fiber for incorporation into an organic resin composite, the coated ceramic fiber comprising a ceramic fiber, a thin, amorphous silanol coating on the outer surface of the ceramic fiber, and a coupling agent including organic binding sites bound to the silanol coating.
- 2. The coated ceramic fiber of claim 1, wherein the silanol coating comprises alkylsilicate.
- 3. The coated ceramic fiber of claim 1, wherein the silanol coating is a cohydrated silanol ceramic layer.
- 4. The coated ceramic fiber of claim 1, wherein the silanol coating is applied to the ceramic fibers as a solution of hydrated alkylsilicate.
- 5. The coated ceramic fiber of claim 1, wherein the silanol is applied as a sol-gel.
- 6. The coated ceramic fiber of claim 5, wherein the sol-gel comprises a hydrolyzed solution of tetraethyl-o-silicate.
- 7. The coated ceramic fiber of claim 1 wherein the coupling agent bound to the amorphous silanol coating comprises a thin film.
- 8. The coated ceramic fiber of claim 7, wherein the coupling agent has a silanol binding site and a resin-philic site.
- 9. The coated ceramic fiber of claim 8, wherein the coupling agent comprises an aminoalkylsilane.
- 10. The coated ceramic fiber of claim 9, wherein the aminoalkylsilane comprises gamma-aminopropyltriethoxysilane.
- 11. The coated ceramic fiber of claim 1, wherein the ceramic fiber is selected from the group consisting of aluminoborosilicate, alumina, silicon carbide, zirconium oxide, or mixtures thereof.
