Claims
- 1. A transplant suitable for transplantation from a donor into an immunologically incompatible individual, said transplant being coated with an insoluble immunological barrier immunological barrier membrane, said membrane comprising:
- a) a non-cytotoxic first layer comprising a gellable polymer and a cationic amino acid polymer; and
- b) a non-cytotoxic second layer covering and chemically bonded to said non-cytotoxic first layer, the second layer comprising an anionic amino acid polymer.
- 2. The transplant of claim 1 wherein said transplant is an allograft.
- 3. The transplant of claim 1 wherein said transplant is an endocrine transplant.
- 4. The transplant of claim 1 wherein said transplant is a pancreatic islet.
- 5. The transplant of claim 1 wherein the cationic amino acid polymer comprises poly-L-lysine.
- 6. The transplant of claim 1 wherein the anionic amino acid polymer comprises poly-L-aspartic acid.
- 7. The transplant of claim 1 wherein the molecular weight of the anionic amino acid polymer is in the range of 2000 to 500,000 daltons, and the membrane has a total thickness within the range of 1 and 100 microns.
- 8. A transplant suitable for transplantation from a donor into an immunologically incompatible individual, said transplant being coated with an insoluble immunological barrier membrane, said insoluble immunological barrier membrane comprising:
- a) a non-cytotoxic first layer comprising a cationic amino acid polymer; and
- b) overcoating the non-cytotoxic first layer, a noncytotoxic second layer that comprises agarose and an anionic amino acid polymer wherein said non-cytotoxic second layer is chemically bonded to said non-cytotoxic first layer.
- 9. The transplant of claim 8 wherein a additionally non-cytotoxic third layer overcoats and is chemically bonded to said non-cytotoxic second layer, said non-cytotoxic third layer comprising a cationic amino acid polymer.
- 10. The transplant of claim 8 wherein said transplant is an allograft.
- 11. The transplant of claim 8 wherein said transplant is an endocrine transplant.
- 12. The transplant of claim 8 wherein said transplant is a pancreatic islet.
- 13. The transplant of claim 8 wherein the cationic amino acid polymer of the non-cytotoxic first layer is poly-L-lysine and the anionic amino acid polymer of the second non-cytotoxic layer is poly-L-aspartic acid.
- 14. The transplant of claim 9 wherein the cationic acid polymer of the non-cytotoxic third layer has a molecular weight in the range of from 2,000 to 500,000 daltons and the membrane has a total thickness between 1 and 100 microns.
