Claims
- 1. A coating composition comprising:
a) an acetal-functional binder, and b) a thiol-functional cross-linker, wherein the acetal-functional binder is represented by formula II 19wherein P is a binder backbone, A is oxygen, sulphur or NRVII, wherein RVII is hydrogen or an alkyl group with 1 to 4 carbon atoms, K is a divalent and/or trivalent organic moiety having 1 to 30 carbon atoms, optionally comprising hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and/or sulphur atoms, and having one link to the binder backbone when K is divalent and two links to the binder backbone when K is trivalent, and the individual moieties K1 to Km may be the same or different, m is an integer from 1 to 50, n is an integer from 1 to 10, and R and R′ may be the same or different and represent alkyl groups with 1 to 4 carbon atoms.

The coating composition according to claim 1 wherein K is a divalent organic moiety comprising an —O-bond linked to the binder backbone and the individual moieties K1 to Km may be the same or different and are the moieties represented by (i) the structure of formula IIIa or (ii) the structure of formula IIIb,

The coating composition according to claim 1 wherein the binder is an acetal-functional polyurethane and wherein the individual moieties K1 to Km in formula II comprise di- and trivalent moieties, and K1 to Km are linked to the binder backbone via —O-bonds and are the moieties represented by (i) the structure of formula IIIa, (ii) the structure of formula IIIb, (iii) the structure of formula Via or (iv) the structure of formula VIb

The coating composition according to claim 1 wherein the binder is an acetal-functional polyaddition polymer and wherein K is divalent and linked to the binder backbone via an —O-bond, and the individual moieties K1 to Km may be the same or different and are the moieties represented by (i) the structure of formula IXa or (ii) the structure of formula IXb,
- 6. The coating composition according to claim 2 wherein the acetal-functional binder is obtainable by amidation of esters with aminoacetals of formula Ia
- 7. The coating composition according to claim 6 wherein the acetal-functional binder is a compound represented by formula X
- 8. The coating composition according to claim 1 wherein the cross-linker is a thiol-functional polyurethanes or esterification reaction products of a polyol and a mercapto carboxylic acid.
- 9. The coating composition according to claim 1 wherein the molar ratio of acetal-functional groups to thiol-functional groups is in the range between 1.0:0.1 and 1.0:3.5.
- 10. A coating composition comprising an acetal-functional binder, wherein the acetal-functional binder is prepared from acetal-functional intermediates according to formulae Va and/or Vb

The coating composition according to claim 10 wherein the acetal-functional binder is a polyaddition polymer and the acetal-functional intermediate is (i) the monomer represented by the structure of formula VIIIa, (ii) the monomer represented by the structure of formula VIIIb or (iii) a mixture of the monomers represented by the structures of formulae VIIIa and VIIIb,

The coating composition according to claim 10 wherein the acetal-functional binder is a polyurethane and the acetal-functional intermediates are (i) the diols represented by the structure of formula Va, (ii) the diols represented the structure of formula Vb or (iii) mixtures of the diols represented by the structures of formulae Va and Vb,
- 13. The coating composition according to claim 12 wherein the intermediates comprise additionally an acetal-functional mono-ol according to formulae Va and/or Vb, wherein R″ is hydrogen or an alkyl group with 1 to 10 carbon atoms.
- 14. The coating composition according to claim 1 wherein the acetal-functional binder is a polyurethane or polyaddition polymer.
- 15. The coating composition according to claim 10 wherein the acetal-functional binder is a polyurethane or polyaddition polymer.
- 16. The coating composition according to claim 1 wherein the coating composition is solvent borne.
- 17. The coating composition according to claim 10 wherein the coating composition is solvent borne.
- 18. The coating composition according to claim 16 wherein the coating composition contains at most 10 weight-% of added organic solvent and which is liquid.
- 19. The coating composition according to claim 17 wherein the coating composition contains at most 10 weight-% of added organic solvent and which is liquid.
- 20. The coating composition according claim 1 wherein the coating composition is water borne.
- 21. The coating composition according claim 10 wherein the coating composition is water borne.
- 22. A coated substrate, wherein it has been coated with a composition according to claim 1.
- 23. A coated substrate, wherein it has been coated with a composition according to claim 10.
- 24. A method of using the coating composition according to claim 1 in the refinishing of large vehicles and the refinishing of cars.
- 25. A method of using the coating composition according to claim 10 in the refinishing of large vehicles and the refinishing of cars.
- 26. An adhesive composition comprising:
a) an acetal-functional binder, and b) a thiol-functional cross-linker, wherein the acetal-functional binder is represented by formula II 29wherein P is a binder backbone, K is a divalent and/or trivalent organic moiety having 1 to 30 carbon atoms, optionally comprising hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen or sulphur atoms, having one link to the binder backbone when K is divalent and two links to the binder backbone when K is trivalent, and the individual moieties K1 to Km may be the same or different, A is oxygen, sulphur or NRVII, wherein RVII is hydrogen or an alkyl group with 1 to 4 carbon atoms, m is an integer from 1 to 50, n is an integer from 1 to 10, and R and R″ may be the same or different and represent alkyl groups with 1 to 4 carbon atoms.
- 27. An acetal-functional ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable monomer which is (i) an ethylenically unsaturated monomer represented by the structure of formula VIIIa, (ii) an ethylenically unsaturated monomer represented by the structure of formula VIIIb or (iii) a mixture of the ethylenically unsaturated monomers represented by the structures of formulae VIIIa and VIIIb,
- 28. A process for the preparation of the ethylenically unsaturated monomer according to claim 26 comprising the step of reacting an aminoacetal of formula Ia
- 29. An ethylenically unsaturated monomer obtainable by reacting a hydroxyl-functional aminoacetal derivative according to formulae Va and/or Vb

- 34. A process for the preparation of a coating composition comprising an acetal-functional polyurethane dispersion and a thiol-functional cross-linker, wherein it comprises the steps of
a) mixing an acetal-functional polyurethane binder and a thiol-functional cross-linker in a substantially non-aqueous medium, and b) forming an aqueous dispersion of the mixture.
