Claims
- 1. A method of forming a coating, said method comprising the steps of:
a.) applying a coating composition to a hard surface, said coating composition having a contact angle of less than 20 degrees when applied to said hard surface, and comprising:
(i) a plurality of nanoparticles selected from the group consisting of synthetic fluorohectorites, synthetic boehmite and mixtures thereof; (ii) a nonionic surfactant; (iii) water; and (iv) the balance adjunct ingredients; and b.) drying or allowing said coating to dry to a sufficient degree such that a coating exhibiting sheeting, when tested according to Applicants' Visual Performance Assessment, and having
(i) a contact angle, when measured according to Applicants' Contact Angle Test, of less than or equal to 60 degrees; and (ii) a gloss value, when measured according to Applicants' Gloss Value Test, of greater than or equal to 75% of the gloss value of the untreated hard surface; is formed on said hard surface.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein said plurality of nanoparticles comprises, a synthetic fluorohectorite having the following formula:
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein said nonionic surfactant is selected from the group consisting of C9/11EO8-cyclohexyl acetal alkyl capped nonionic, C11EO7-n-butyl acetal, C9/11EO8-2-ethylhexyl acetal, C11EO8-pyranyl, alcohol alkoxylate, C9/11EO2-8-linear alcohol ethoxylate, C9/11EO2-8-branched alcohol ethoxylate and mixtures thereof.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein said coating composition comprises, based on the total weight of said composition:
a.) from about 0.02 to about 0.2% nanoparticles; b.) from about 0.02 to about 0.2% nonionic surfactant; and c.) at least 60% water.
- 5. The method of claim 4 wherein said coating composition comprises, based on the total weight of said composition:
a.) from about 0.03 to about 0.1% nanoparticles; and b.) from about 0.025 to about 0.075% nonionic surfactant.
- 6. The method of claim 1 wherein said coating composition is substantially free of polymers.
- 7. The method of claim 1 wherein said coating composition is dried or allowed to dry to a sufficient degree such that a said coating's contact angle is less than or equal to 40 degrees; and said coating's gloss value is greater than or equal to 85%.
- 8. The method of claim 1 wherein said coating comprises, when measured according to Applicants' X-Ray Fluorescence Analysis, from 0.1 ug to less than 3 ug of nanoparticles per cm2 of coating.
- 9. A hard surface comprising a coating formed in accordance with the method of claim 1.
- 10. A hard surface according to claim 9, said hard surface comprising a material selected from the group consisting of polyurethane fiberglass, plastics, metals, glass, dishware, ceramic, wood, stone, concrete, asphalt, mineral, painted and mixtures thereof.
- 11. An article of manufacture comprising a hard surface according to claim 10.
- 12. The article of manufacture according to claim 11, said article of manufacturing being a vehicle.
- 13. A hard surface coating, said hard surface coating:
a.) exhibiting sheeting, when tested according to Applicants' Visual Performance Assessment; b.) having a contact angle, when measured according to Applicants' Contact Angle Test, of less than or equal to 60 degrees; and a gloss value, when measured according to Applicants' Gloss Value Test, of greater than or equal to 75% of the gloss value of the untreated hard surface; and c.) comprising, when measured according to Applicants' X-Ray Fluorescence Analysis, from 0.1 ug to less than 3 ug of nanoparticles per cm2 of coating, said nanoparticles being selected from the group consisting of synthetic fluorohectorites, synthetic boehmite and mixtures thereof.
- 14. The hard surface coating of claim 13 said coating comprising a nanoparticulate synthetic fluorohectorite having the following formula:
- 15. The hard surface coating of claim 13, said hard surface coating being substantially free of polymers.
- 16. The hard surface coating of claim 13, said hard surface coating having a contact angle of less than or equal to 40 degrees and a gloss value greater than or equal to 85%.
- 17. A hard surface comprising the hard surface coating of claim 13.
- 18. A hard surface according to claim 17, said hard surface comprising a material selected from the group consisting of polyurethane fiberglass, plastics, metals, glass, dishware, ceramic, wood, stone, concrete, asphalt, mineral, painted and mixtures thereof.
- 19. An article of manufacture comprising a hard surface according to claim 17.
