Claims
- 1. An aqueous coating dispersion for catalysis-promoting coatings comprising finely divided solid materials, said solid materials comprising at least one support material and optionally one or more promoters, wherein the ensemble of said solid materials has a multimodal particle size distribution including a fine-particle solids fraction and a course-particle solid fraction, wherein the coarsest particle solids fraction has an average particle diameter in the range of 20 to 100 .mu.m.
- 2. A coating dispersion as claimed in claim 1, wherein the ensemble of said solid materials has a bimodal particle size distribution.
- 3. A coating dispersion as claimed in claim 2, wherein at least one of said solid materials has a bimodal particle size distribution with one fine and one coarse particle fraction.
- 4. A coating dispersion as claimed in claim 2, wherein at least one promoter being present only in the fine-particle fraction.
- 5. A coating dispersion as claimed in claim 2, wherein the fine-particle fraction has an average particle diameter between 1 and 10 .mu.m and is present in a ratio by weight of 20:1 to 1:2 to the coarse-particle faction.
- 6. A coating dispersion as claimed in claim 1, wherein the coating dispersion further includes an aqueous coating dispersion for catalysis-promoting coatings comprising finely divided solid materials, said solid materials comprising at least one support material and optionally one or more promoters, and further optionally one or more soluble and/or insoluble precursors of said promoters wherein the ensemble of said solid materials has a multimodal particle size distribution including a fine-particle solids fraction and a course-particle solid fraction, wherein the coarsest particle solids fraction has an average particle diameter in the range of 20 to 100 .mu.m.
- 7. A coating dispersion as claimed in claim 1, wherein the dispersion further includes at least one catalytically active component.
- 8. A coating dispersion as claimed in claim 7, wherein the coating dispersion further includes soluble and/or insoluble precursors of said catalytically active components and of said promoters.
- 9. A coating dispersion as claimed in claim 1, wherein said support material is at least one member selected from the group comprising: aluminum oxide, titanium oxide, silicon oxide, tin oxide, zirconium oxide, magnesium oxide, are earth oxides, aluminum silicate, zeolites, and alkaline earth metal titanate, wherein the support material is optionally stabilized.
- 10. A coating dispersion as claimed in claim 1, wherein said promoters are selected from the group of: compounds of iron, cobalt, nickel, rare earth metals, alkaline earth metals, and the compounds of the elements of group IIIA, IVA, VA, and IB to VIIB of the periodic system of elements.
- 11. A catalyst comprising a catalysis-promoting coating on an inert structure-reinforcing carrier wherein said catalysis-promoting coating comprises at least one layer formed from a multimodal coating dispersion according to claim 1.
- 12. A catalyst according to claim 11, wherein the coating further comprises additional catalytically active components.
- 13. A catalyst according to claim 11, wherein at least one of said layers if formed from a monomodal coating dispersion.
- 14. A catalyst according to claim 12 wherein a bottom layer is formed from a monomodal coating dispersion.
- 15. A catalyst according to claim 12 wherein a top layer is formed from a monomodal coating dispersion.
- 16. An aqueous coating dispersion for catalysis-promoting coatings comprising finely divided solid materials, said solid materials comprising at least one support material and optionally one or more promoters, and further optionally one or more soluble and/or insoluble precursors of said promoters wherein the ensemble of said solid materials has a multimodal particle size distribution including a fine-particle solids fraction and a course-particle solid fraction, wherein the coarsest particle solids fraction has an average particle diameter in the range of 20 to 100 .mu.m.
- 17. A catalyst according to claim 11 wherein at least one of said layers contains a catalytically active component selected from the group consisting of platinum, palladium, rhodium and iridium or mixtures thereof.
