Claims
- 1. A manufacturing facility for applying a coating to vehicle structural frames, comprising:
- a moveable transport mechanism;
- a loading station for attaching a vehicle structural frame to said transport mechanism, the frame being a generally flat longitudinal member and of a size extending substantially the length and width of a vehicle and supporting the vehicle body, the frame having a height, a width substantially greater than said height, and a length substantially greater than said width;
- a coating station having a tank containing coating liquid, said transport mechanism transporting said vehicle structural frame from said loading station to said coating station and dipping said vehicle structural frame into said coating liquid in said tank in a horizontal orientation;
- an oscillating mechanism oscillating said vehicle structural frame in said coating liquid in said tank;
- an unloading station for detaching said vehicle structural frame from said transport mechanism, said transport mechanism moving said vehicle structural frame from said coating station to said unloading station.
- 2. The facility according to claim 1 wherein said oscillating mechanism comprises a rotating eccentric cam stroking said transport mechanism.
- 3. The facility according to claim 1 wherein said transport mechanism is a compound movement member having a vertical component of movement for dipping said vehicle structural frame into said coating liquid in said tank, and having a lateral component of movement for moving said vehicle structural frame between said stations, and wherein said oscillating mechanism comprises an oscillating member stroking said transport mechanism up and down along said vertical component of travel when said vehicle structural frame is in said coating liquid in said tank.
- 4. The facility according to claim 1 wherein said transport mechanism comprises a rotary carousel having a vertically stationary central hub rotatable about a vertical axis and having an arm thereon carrying said vehicle structural frame and swingable upwardly and downwardly in an arc about a pivot point at said hub, and said oscillating mechanism engages said arm and oscillates said arm to pivot about said pivot point to move said vehicle structural frame up and down in said coating liquid in said tank.
- 5. The facility according to claim 1 wherein said height of said frame is about 16 inches, said width of said frame is about 42 inches, and said length of said frame is about 178 inches.
- 6. A manufacturing facility for applying a coating to vehicle structural components, comprising:
- a moveable transport mechanism;
- a loading station for attaching a vehicle structural component to said transport mechanism;
- a coating station having a tank containing coating liquid, said transport mechanism transporting said vehicle structural component from said loading station to said coating station and dipping said vehicle structural component into said coating liquid in said tank;
- an oscillating mechanism oscillating said vehicle structural component in said coating liquid in said tank;
- an unloading station for detaching said vehicle structural component from said transport mechanism, said transport mechanism moving said vehicle structural component from said coating station to said unloading station,
- wherein said transport mechanism comprises a rotary carousel having a central hub rotatable about a vertical axis and having an arm thereon carrying said vehicle structural component and swingable upwardly and downwardly in an arc about a pivot point at said hub, and said oscillating mechanism engages said arm and oscillates said arm to pivot about said pivot point to move said vehicle structural component up and down in said coating liquid in said tank,
- wherein said arm has an inner end pivoted to said hub, and an outer end, and wherein said oscillating mechanism engages said outer end of said arm and moves said outer end up and down while said vehicle structural component is in said coating liquid in said tank.
- 7. A manufacturing facility for applying a coating to vehicle structural components, comprising:
- a moveable transport mechanism;
- a loading station for attaching a vehicle structural component to said transport mechanism;
- a coating station having a tank containing coating liquid, said transport mechanism transporting said vehicle structural component from said loading station to said coating station and dipping said vehicle structural component into said coating liquid in said tank;
- an oscillating mechanism oscillating said vehicle structural component in said coating liquid in said tank;
- an unloading station for detaching said vehicle structural component from said transport mechanism, said transport mechanism moving said vehicle structural component from said coating station to said unloading station,
- wherein said transport mechanism comprises a rotary carousel having a central hub rotatable about a vertical axis and having an arm thereon carrying said vehicle structural component and swingable upwardly and downwardly in an arc about a pivot point at said hub, and said oscillating mechanism engages said arm and oscillates said arm to pivot about said pivot point to move said vehicle structural component up and down in said coating liquid in said tank,
- wherein said arm has an inner end pivoted to said hub, and an outer end, and wherein said oscillating mechanism engages said outer end of said arm and moves said outer end up and down while said vehicle structural component is in said coating liquid in said tank,
- wherein said oscillating mechanism comprises a rotating eccentric cam stroking said outer end of said arm up and down.
- 8. A manufacturing facility for applying a coating to vehicle structural components, comprising:
- a moveable transport mechanism;
- a loading station for attaching a vehicle structural component to said transport mechanism;
- a coating station having a tank containing coating liquid, said transport mechanism transporting said vehicle structural component from said loading station to said coating station and dipping said vehicle structural component into said coating liquid in said tank;
- an oscillating mechanism oscillating said vehicle structural component in said coating liquid in said tank;
- an unloading station for detaching said vehicle structural component from said transport mechanism, said transport mechanism moving said vehicle structural component from said coating station to said unloading station,
- wherein said transport mechanism comprises a rotary carousel having a central hub rotatable about a vertical axis and having an arm thereon carrying said vehicle structural component and swingable upwardly and downwardly in an arc about a pivot point at said hub, and said oscillating mechanism engages said arm and oscillates said arm to pivot about said pivot point to move said vehicle structural component up and down in said coating liquid in said tank,
- wherein said oscillating mechanism comprises a cable engaging said arm and alternately lifting and lowering said arm while said vehicle structural component is in said coating liquid in said tank.
- 9. A manufacturing facility for applying a coating to vehicle structural components, comprising:
- a moveable transport mechanism;
- a loading station for attaching a vehicle structural component to said transport mechanism;
- a coating station having a tank containing coating liquid, said transport mechanism transporting said vehicle structural component from said loading station to said coating station and dipping said vehicle structural component into said coating liquid in said tank;
- an oscillating mechanism oscillating said vehicle structural component in said coating liquid in said tank;
- an unloading station for detaching said vehicle structural component from said transport mechanism, said transport mechanism moving said vehicle structural component from said coating station to said unloading station,
- wherein said transport mechanism comprises a rotary carousel having a central hub rotatable about a vertical axis and having an arm thereon carrying said vehicle structural component and swingable upwardly and downwardly in an arc about a pivot point at said hub, and said oscillating mechanism engages said arm and oscillates said arm to pivot about said pivot point to move said vehicle structural component up and down in said coating liquid in said tank,
- wherein said oscillating mechanism comprises a cable engaging said arm, and a pulley around which said cable extends, and means stroking said pulley back and forth to oscillate said arm up and down while said vehicle structural component is in said coating liquid in said tank.
- 10. The facility according to claim 9 wherein said pulley is stroked rectilinearly back and forth.
- 11. The facility according to claim 9 wherein said pulley is eccentrically mounted on a wheel, and said pulley is stroked by rotating said wheel.
- 12. A manufacturing facility for applying a coating to vehicle structural frames, comprising a rotary carousel having a vertically stationary central hub rotatable about a vertical axis, an arm having a first portion extending upwardly, and having a second portion extending outwardly from said first portion and forming an elbow therewith at a given angle, said arm being pivoted at said first portion to said hub to swing in an arc about a horizontal pivot axis, a plurality of hands extending downwardly from said second portion of said arm for engaging one or more stacked vehicle structural frames, each frame being a generally flat longitudinal member and of a size extending substantially the length and width of a vehicle and supporting the vehicle body, the frame having a height, a width substantially greater than said height, and a length substantially greater than said width, a loading station for attaching said one or more vehicle structural frames to said arm at said hands, a coating station having a tank containing coating liquid, rotation of said hub moving said arm from said loading station to said coating station, downward swinging of said arm about said pivot axis lowering said one or more stacked vehicle structural frames into said coating liquid in said tank, said second portion of said arm being spaced above the horizontal plane of said pivot axis when said one or more stacked vehicle structural frames are in said coating liquid in said tank, upward swinging of said arm about said pivot axis raising said one or more stacked vehicle structural frames out of said coating liquid in said tank.
- 13. The facility according to claim 12 wherein said given angle of said elbow is selected such that said pivot axis is substantially horizontally coplanar with the center of the stack of said one or more stacked vehicle structural frames in said tank to provide more nearly vertical travel of said one or more stacked vehicle structural frames into and out of said tank as the one or more stacked vehicle structural frames are dipped in said coating liquid, to in turn provide more uniform coating by minimizing the differential travel path length and time between inner and outer ends of the vehicle structural frames.
- 14. A manufacturing facility for applying a coating to vehicle structural components, comprising a rotary carousel having a central hub rotatable about a vertical axis, an arm for carrying a vehicle structural component, parallelogram linkage pivotally mounting said arm to said hub such that said parallelogram linkage pivots about said hub and swings up and down in arn arc in a vertical plan and such that said arm moves up and down in a said vertical plan along a travel path including a given range of motion substantially parallel to said vertical axis, a loading station for attaching said vehicle structural component to said arm, a coating station having a tank containing coating liquid, rotation of said hub moving said arm from said loading station to said coating station, said vehicle structural component having a longitudinal extent of given length between longitudinal ends, downward pivoting and swinging of said parallelogram linkage and downward movement of said arm lowering said vehicle structural component into said coating liquid in said tank in a generally horizontal position such that said longitudinal extent of said vehicle structural component is substantially horizontal, upward pivoting and swinging of said parallelogram linkage and upward movement of said arm raising said vehicle structural component out of said coating liquid in said tank in a generally horizontal position, said lowering and raising into and out of said coating liquid in said tank being in said given range of motion such that both said longitudinal ends of said vehicle structural component enter said coating liquid in said tank substantially simultaneously and leave said coating liquid in said tank substantially simultaneously and have substantially the same travel path length and time in said coating liquid in said tank, to provide uniform coating;
- wherein said parallelogram linkage comprises an upper link and a lower link each having an inner end pivotally connected to said hub, and each having an outer end pivotally connected to said arm; and
- wherein said upper link is shorter than said lower link, and said arm moves along said travel path upwardly through said given range of motion and then moves through an upper range of motion wherein said arm swings in an arc nonparallel to said vertical axis.
- 15. The facility according to claim 14 wherein said upper link pivots through a greater angle than said lower link during said upper range of motion of said arm.
- 16. The invention according to claim 15 wherein said hub has an extended trunion extending outwardly therefrom towards said arm and pivotally mounting said inner end of said upper link.
