Claims
- 1. A coaxial cable comprising a core including at least one inner conductor and a closed cell polyethylene foam dielectric surrounding the inner conductor and bonded thereto, said closed cell foam dielectric being free of chlorofluorocarbons and having a density of no more than 0.22 grams per cubic centimeter, an electrically and mechanically continuous smooth-walled tubular metallic sheath closely surrounding said core and being adhesively bonded thereto, and a protective jacket closely surrounding said tubular metallic sheath, said coaxial cable having a velocity of propagation (V.sub.P) of 90 percent the speed of light or greater.
- 2. A flexible coaxial cable comprising a core including at least one inner conductor and a closed cell foam dielectric that is free of chlorofluorocarbons surrounding the inner conductor, and a tubular metallic sheath closely surrounding said core, said coaxial cable having a velocity of propagation (V.sub.p) of 90 percent the speed of light or greater.
- 3. The coaxial cable according to claim 2 further comprising a protective jacket surrounding said tubular metallic sheath.
- 4. The coaxial cable according to claim 3 wherein said protective jacket is adhesively bonded to said tubular metallic sheath.
- 5. The coaxial cable according to claim 4 wherein said tubular metallic sheath comprises an electrically and mechanically continuous smooth-walled metal tube bonded to said core.
- 6. The coaxial cable according to claim 5 wherein said at least one inner conductor is bonded to said foam dielectric to form said core.
- 7. The coaxial cable according to claim 2 wherein said at least one inner conductor is bonded to said foam dielectric to form said core.
- 8. The coaxial cable according to claim 2 wherein said closed cell foam dielectric has an inner surface adjacent said inner conductor and an outer surface adjacent said metallic sheath, said closed cell foam dielectric having a gradient density increasing radially from the inner surface of said dielectric to the outer surface of said dielectric.
- 9. The coaxial cable according to claim 8 wherein said foam dielectric comprises an inner foam dielectric layer and a separate outer foam dielectric layer, said outer foam dielectric layer having a density greater than the density of said inner foam dielectric layer.
- 10. The coaxial cable according to claim 2, further comprising an unfoamed dielectric skin between said foam dielectric and said metallic sheath.
- 11. The coaxial cable according to claim 2 wherein said closed cell foam dielectric comprises a foamed polyolefin having a density of no more than 0.22 g/cc.
- 12. The coaxial cable according to claim 11 wherein said closed cell foam dielectric is a blend of low density polyethylene and high density polyethylene.
- 13. The coaxial cable according to claim 11 wherein said closed cell foam dielectric have a maximum cell diameter of 170 microns.
- 14. The coaxial cable according to claim 11 wherein closed cell foam dielectric have a mean cell diameter of between about 90 and 130 microns.
- 15. The coaxial cable according to claim 11 wherein the cable has a minimum bend radius of less than 10 cable diameters.
- 16. The coaxial cable according to claim 2 wherein said closed cell foam dielectric comprises a foamed polyolefin having a density of no more than 0.19 g/cc.
- 17. The coaxial cable according to claim 2 wherein said closed cell foam dielectric comprises a foamed polyolefin having a density of no more than 0.17 g/cc.
- 18. A coaxial cable comprising a core including at least one inner conductor and a polyolefin closed cell foam dielectric surrounding the inner conductor, and a tubular metallic sheath closely surrounding said core, said closed cell foam dielectric having a density of no more than 0.22 grams per cubic centimeter and containing residual amounts of an endothermic nucleating agent.
- 19. The coaxial cable according to claim 18 wherein said closed cell foam dielectric also includes residual amounts of an exothermic nucleating agent.
- 20. The coaxial cable according to claim 18 wherein said closed cell foam dielectric also includes residual amounts of a thermoplastic binder.
- 21. The coaxial cable according to claim 18 wherein said closed cell foam dielectric is a blend of low density polyethylene and high density polyethylene.
- 22. The coaxial cable according to claim 18 wherein said cable has a velocity of propagation (V.sub.P) of 90 percent of the speed of light or greater.
- 23. The coaxial cable according to claim 18 wherein closed cell foam dielectric have a maximum cell diameter of 170 microns.
- 24. The coaxial cable according to claim 18 wherein said closed cell foam dielectric have a mean cell diameter of between about 90 and 130 microns.
- 25. The coaxial cable according to claim 18 wherein said closed cell foam dielectric has a gradient density, said gradient density increasing radially from an inner surface of said dielectric to an outer surface of said dielectric.
- 26. The coaxial cable according to claim 25 wherein said foam dielectric comprises an inner foam dielectric layer and a separate outer foam dielectric layer, said outer foam dielectric layer having a density greater than the density of said inner foam dielectric layer.
- 27. The coaxial cable according to claim 18, further comprising an unfoamed dielectric skin between said foam dielectric and said metallic sheath.
- 28. A flexible coaxial cable comprising a core including at least one inner conductor and a closed sell foam dielectric surrounding the at least one inner conductor, and a tubular metallic sheath closely surrounding said core, said closed cell foam dielectric being free of chloroflurocarbons and containing residual amounts of endothermic nucleating agent and residual amounts of an exothermic nucleating agent, said coaxial cable having a velocity of propagation (V.sub.P) of 90 percent the speed of light or greater.
- 29. The coaxial cable according to claim 28 wherein said closed cell foam dielectric is a polyolefin.
- 30. The coaxial cable according to claim 28 wherein said closed cell foam dielectric has a density of less than 0.17 g/cc.
- 31. The coaxial cable according to claim 28 wherein said closed cell foam dielectric contains residual amounts of an azobisformamide exothermic nucleating agent and residual amounts of a sodium carbonate/citric acid endothermic nucleating agent.
