The present disclosure relates to a carrier for transporting animals. More particularly, the present disclosure relates to a collapsible pet carrier that can, for example, potentially fit into a pocket of a user when not in use.
The discussion in this section is intended to introduce the reader to various aspects of art that may be related to various aspects of the structure and techniques of the present invention, which are described below. This discussion is believed to be helpful to facilitate a better understanding of the various aspects of the present disclosure, and these statements are not an admission of prior art.
Pet carriers have been in use for many years. Many different types of pet carriers, such as cages and bags, have been used to transport pets, such as dogs and cats. However, these pet carriers are either both heavy and difficult to transport or are both light and structurally unstable. Furthermore, these pet carriers tend to be uncomfortable for the pets and do not provide proper ventilation or support. In addition, when they are not in use, these pet carriers occupy a large amount of space during storage or transport. Moreover, these pet carriers tend to have a simple design and functionality with few or no pockets designed for storing items or accessories for the pet and/or the pet owner.
The above and other needs are met by a folding pet carrier. In a first aspect, a collapsible pet carrier includes: an interior space defined between opposing side walls, opposing end walls, and a bottom wall; one or more straps attached to one of the opposing side walls and opposing end walls; a cover movably attached over a top opening of the collapsible carrier; a pair of opposing pockets located on an exterior portion of the bottom wall, the pair of opposing pockets separated by a slit; a board shaped to fit at least partially within the paid of opposing pockets and across the slit; and a closure mechanism formed along an edge of the exterior portion of the bottom wall. In an expanded configuration the board is located at least partially within both of the pair of opposing pockets of the bottom wall. In a collapsed configuration the opposing side walls, opposing end walls, straps, and cover are folded towards the bottom wall and the bottom wall is folded along a center of the bottom wall and secured closed with the closure mechanism.
In one embodiment, the board includes a first portion that is slidably associated with a second portion such that the board is expandable in length. In a collapsed configuration the board is shaped to fit within one of the opposing pockets and in an expanded configuration the board is shaped to fit within at least part of each of the pair of opposing pockets and across the slit.
In another embodiment, the closure mechanism includes a zipper formed around a rim of the exterior portion of the bottom wall.
In yet another embodiment, the cover further includes a zipper for securing the cover over the top opening of the collapsible carrier.
In one embodiment, the pet carrier includes a mesh window formed on one of the opposing end walls. In another embodiment, the pet carrier includes a mesh window formed on one of the opposing side walls.
In yet another embodiment, the pet carrier includes a movable cover located adjacent to an edge of the mesh window, the movable cover secured in an open position with a closure mechanism.
In one embodiment, the pet carrier includes a poop bag dispenser located on a lower region of one of the side walls.
In a second aspect, a collapsible pet carrier is provided having: an interior space defined between opposing side walls, opposing end walls, and a bottom wall; one or more straps attached to one of the opposing side walls and opposing end walls; a cover movably attached over a top opening of the collapsible carrier; a pair of opposing pockets located on an exterior portion of the bottom wall, the pair of opposing pockets separated by a slit; a board shaped to fit at least partially within the paid of opposing pockets and across the slit comprising a first portion that is slidably associated with a second portion such that the board is expandable in length; and a closure mechanism formed along an edge of the exterior portion of the bottom wall.
In a third aspect, a collapsible pet carrier is provided having: an interior space defined between opposing side walls, opposing end walls, and a bottom wall; one or more straps attached to one of the opposing side walls and opposing end walls; a cover movably attached over a top opening of the collapsible carrier; a pair of opposing pockets located on an exterior portion of the bottom wall, the pair of opposing pockets separated by a slit; a board shaped to fit at least partially within the paid of opposing pockets and across the slit comprising a first portion that is slidably associated with a second portion such that the board is expandable in length; and a zipper formed around a rim of the exterior portion of the bottom wall. In an expanded configuration the board is located at least partially within both of the pair of opposing pockets of the bottom wall. In a collapsed configuration the opposing side walls, opposing end walls, straps, and cover are folded towards the bottom wall and the bottom wall is folded along a center of the bottom wall and secured closed with the zipper.

The pet carrier further includes a handle(s) and/or strap(s) 20, e.g., shoulder straps, for carrying the pet carrier 10 and additionally for providing stability for the pet. The shoulder strap(s) 20 is secured to one of the side walls 14A and 14B or end walls 16A and 16B of the pet carrier 10, according to the embodiment in which the pet carrier includes side walls and end walls, or is secured to the curved wall(s) of the described alternative embodiments.
The pet carrier 10 includes a cover 22, such as a flap, by which the top opening can be covered. For example,
Walls of the pet carrier 10 are preferably made of a canvas material, and, as will be discussed below, in an example embodiment contains various accessories attached to the canvas material. In an example embodiment, one or more of the accessories forms a respective portion of a respective one of the walls of the pet carrier, e.g., taking the place of the canvas material otherwise forming the respective wall. According to an alternative example embodiment, the walls of the pet carrier are instead made of a different material.
In an example embodiment of the present invention, the pet carrier 10 includes a mesh material releasably attached to an upper portion 24 (
The pet carrier 10 may include, in one of the side walls 14A and 14B, a mesh/ventilation window 28, as shown in
Also, in an example embodiment and as shown in
In an example embodiment of the present invention, one or both of the end walls 16A and 16B includes a second mesh window 46, e.g., as shown in
The pet carrier 10 includes a firm sheet or board 52, e.g., as shown in
Referring to
In an example embodiment of the present disclosure, the bottom wall 18 has an interior portion and an exterior portion.
The pet carrier 10 is configured for the sheet or board 52 to be slid from the position shown in
For the pet carrier 10 to be in the expanded state, e.g., when a pet is to be housed in the interior space, the sheet/board 52 is inserted at least partially into each of the pockets 54A and 54B and traverses the slit 56. For the pet carrier 10 to be in the collapsed state, e.g., when the pet carrier is not in use and is to be folded over and collapsed, the sheet/board 52 can be placed entirely into one of the pockets 54A or 54B (or mostly in one of the pocket, but without extending into the other one of the pockets) or can be removed altogether from the bottom wall 18.
When the pet carrier 10 is in the collapsed state, the two side walls 14A and 14B, two end walls 16A and 16B, cover 22, strap 20, and any other accessory attached thereto can be folded into the interior space 12 and toward the bottom wall 18, as shown in
The pet carrier 10 of the present disclosure is lightweight, and is used for transporting small pets (e.g., under 20 lbs) within transit systems, protecting the pet within stores and buildings, and for veterinary visits. Further, the pet carrier 10 is readily convertible between a small pouch and an expanded pet carrier such that a user may easily carry the pet carrier 10 when a pet is not contained in the carrier, and such that the pet carrier may readily accept a pet within the carrier 10 when desired by a user.
