Claims
- 1. A process for collating a plurality of folded sheet products into a complete product, each of said plurality of folded product being folded along a fold into a least two folded portions, said process comprising the steps of:
- conveying a first plurality of folded product from a first storage means to a first orientation unit on a first conveying means;
- orienting said first plurality of folded product in said first orientation unit with the fold of each of said first plurality of folded product being in a first predetermined direction perpendicular to said conveying direction;
- feeding each of said first plurality of folded product into a first delivery drum;
- moving a plurality of interspaced driver bars and holder bars of said first conveyor means in said conveying direction towards a turn-round end, said plurality of driver and holder bars disposed between two continuous drive elements;
- delivering each of said first plurality of folded product with said first delivery drum from said first orientation unit onto said plurality of driver bars with the fold of each of said first plurality of folded product leading in the conveying direction and one of the folded portions of each of said plurality of folded product supported by one of said driver bars and one of said holder bars;
- conveying at least one additional plurality of folded product from at least one additional storage means to at least one additional orientation unit;
- orienting said at least one additional plurality of folded product in said at least one additional orientation unit with the fold of each of said at least one additional plurality of folded product being in said first predetermined direction perpendicular to said conveying direction;
- feeding each of said at least one additional plurality of folded product onto at least one additional delivery drum located down stream of said first delivery drum in said conveying direction;
- delivering each of said at least one additional plurality of folded product with said at least one additional delivery drum from said at least one additional orientation unit onto said plurality of driver bars in timed relationship to said first delivery drum, each of said one additional plurality of folded product nested over one of said first plurality of folded product, previously delivered to said driver bar by said first delivery drum to form a nested product;
- conveying said nested product with said first conveyor means from said first and at least one additional delivery drum to a stitching station having a first member disposed adjacent to the turn-round end of said first conveyor means and a second member juxtaposed said turn-round end of said first conveyor means, one of said first and second members being a stitching member and the other being a counterpiece;
- translating said second member in a direction parallel to said conveying direction to pass between the folded portions of said nested product to press the fold of said nested first and at least one additional plurality of folded product between said first and second members after said driver bar has passed the first member of said stitching station; and
- stitching the fold of said nested product to produce a completed product and depositing said completed product onto a second conveyor, said completed product maintaining the fold of said first and said at least one additional plurality of folded product perpendicular to said conveying direction.
- 2. A collating machine for gathering a plurality of folded sheet product into a complete product, each of said plurality of folded product being folded along a fold into folded portions, said collating machine comprising:
- a frame;
- conveying means mounted to said frame for carrying said folded sheet product in only one predetermined conveying direction, said conveying means having two continuous drive elements mounted to said frame and a forward turn-around end, said drive elements moving in spaced vertical drive planes, respectively;
- a plurality of driver bars spaced between said two continuous drive elements, said plurality of driver bars extending perpendicular to said conveying direction and perpendicular to the drive planes of said continuous drive elements to carry said folded sheet product in said predetermined conveying direction;
- means for mounting said two continuous drive elements to said frame;
- means for stitching said completed product mounted adjacent to said forward turn-around end of said conveying means, said stitching means further comprising a counterpiece member and a stitching member located adjacent to said counterpiece member, a first one of said counterpiece and stitching members disposed adjacent to the forward turn-around end and the other member juxtaposed said forward turn-around end and spaced apart from the first member to permit the driver bars to pass between said counterpiece member and said stitching member, said stitching member and counterpiece member further being movable relative to one another, said other member disposed internal to said forward turn-around end of said drive elements, and means for moving said first member into said folded sheet product and operative to carry said folded sheet product towards the other of said members;
- first means for delivering a plurality of said folded sheet product to said driver bars, said first delivery means mounted above said conveying means and having an axis of orientation extending substantially horizontal and perpendicular to said conveying direction, said first means including means for depositing said folded sheet product on one of said plurality of driver bars with the fold leading in the conveying direction and with one of folded portions of the folded product supported by another of said plurality of driver bars; and
- at least one additional means for delivering a plurality of said folded sheet product to said driver bars, said at least one additional delivery means mounted above said conveying means, each of said at least one additional delivering means having an axis of orientation extending substantially horizontal and perpendicular to said conveying direction, said at least one additional delivery means including means for depositing said folded sheet product over the folded sheet product delivered by said first delivery means in timed relationship to said first delivery means, said folded sheet product of said at least one additional delivering means being deposited over said folded sheet product of said first delivery means with the fold leading in the conveying direction and with said folded sheet product surrounding the folded sheet product previously delivered by said first delivery means, said conveying means gathers said folded sheet product into a complete nested product, which is stitched by said means for stitching at said forward turn-around end of the conveyor means.
- 3. The collating machine as claimed in claim 2 wherein said means for stitching comprises a wire stitching head.
