Claims
- 1. A collection device comprising:
a vessel for holding a fluid substance, wherein the vessel comprises an open end, a closed end and a side wall having an inner surface; and a cap having means for positioning a specimen retrieval device along the inner surface of the vessel when the cap is fixedly associated with the vessel.
- 2. The collection device of claim 1, wherein the specimen retrieval device is a swab having a handle member.
- 3. The collection device of claim 2, wherein the handle member includes a score line to facilitate removing a portion of the handle prior to fixedly associating the cap with the vessel.
- 4. The collection device of claim 1, wherein the cap includes a penetrable portion that can be penetrated by a fluid transfer device.
- 5. The collection device of claim 4, wherein the fluid transfer device is a plastic pipette tip.
- 6. The collection device of claim 5, wherein the penetrable portion of the cap can be penetrated by the pipette tip with the application of less than 8 pounds force.
- 7. The collection device of claim 4 further comprising a wick for inhibiting the release of an aerosol or bubbles from the collection device.
- 8. The collection device of claim 7, wherein the wick is a pile fabric.
- 9. The collection device of claim 7, wherein the cap includes a seal for retaining the wick within the cap.
- 10. The collection device of claim 4, wherein the penetrable portion of the cap includes a plurality of radially extending striations.
- 11. The collection device of claim 1, wherein the cap and the vessel include mated threads and the cap is screwed onto the vessel.
- 12. The collection device of claim 11 further comprising the specimen retrieval device contained therein.
- 13. The collection device of claim 1, wherein the cap and the vessel are each formed from a plastic resin.
- 14. A kit comprising the collection device of claim 1 in packaged combination with a specimen retrieval device.
- 15. The kit of claim 14, wherein the specimen retrieval device is a swab having a handle member.
- 16. The kit of claim 15, wherein the handle member includes a score line to facilitate removing a portion of the handle prior to fixedly associating the cap with the vessel.
- 17. The kit of claim 14, wherein the cap includes a penetrable portion that can be penetrated by a fluid transfer device.
- 18. The kit of claim 17, wherein the fluid transfer device is a plastic pipette tip.
- 19. The kit of claim 18, wherein the penetrable portion of the cap can be penetrated by the pipette tip with the application of less than 8 pounds force.
- 20. The kit of claim 17 further comprising a wick for inhibiting the release of an aerosol or bubbles from the kit.
- 21. The kit of claim 20, wherein the wick is a pile fabric.
- 22. The kit of claim 20, wherein the cap includes a seal for retaining the wick within the cap.
- 23. The kit of claim 17, wherein the penetrable portion of the cap includes a plurality of radially extending striations.
- 24. The kit of claim 14, wherein the cap and the vessel include mated threads and the cap is screwed onto the vessel.
- 25. The collection device of claim 14, wherein the cap and the vessel are each formed from a plastic resin.
