Claims
- 1. A composition comprising a coating on a surface of a substrate, said composition comprising:
a substrate; a crack-free coating material comprising a graded concentration of two or more ceramic composites.
- 2. The composition of claim 1 wherein at least one of said ceramic composites comprises ceria or zirconia.
- 3. The composition of claim 1 wherein said coating comprises at least one element selected from the group consisting of Y, Zr, Al, Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm Eu, Gd, Th, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, 0, C, N, and Si.
- 4. The composition of claim 1 wherein said coating comprises an oxide, carbide, nitride or silicide selected from the group consisting of Zr, Y, La, a rare earth element of atomic number from 58 through 71, a transition element of atomic number from 21 through 30 and Al.
- 5. The composition of claim 1 wherein said coating material comprises an oxide.
- 6. The composition of claim 1 wherein said coating comprises a cross-section having a continuously graded concentration of said ceramic composites on said substrate.
- 7. The composition of claim 1 wherein said coating comprises a cross-section having a discontinuously graded concentration of said ceramic composites.
- 8. The composition of claim 1 wherein said coating comprises a thickness of greater than about 10 microns and has a density greater than that of said substrate.
- 9. The composition of claim 1 wherein said coating comprises a thickness of greater than about 20 microns.
- 10. The composition of claim 1 wherein said coating comprises a thickness of greater than about 40 microns.
- 11. The composition of claim 1 wherein said substrate is selected from the group consisting of gas turbine blades, sensors, and steam eletrolyzers.
- 12. The composition of claim 1 wherein said substrate is selected from the group consisting of glass, metal and ceramic.
- 13. The composition of claim 13 wherein said substrate is porous.
- 14. The composition of claim 14 wherein said coating comprises yttria-stabilized zirconia.
- 15. The composition of claim 13 wherein said coating comprises yttria-doped ceria.
- 16. The composition of claim 13 wherein said coating comprises a transition zone containing yttria-stabilized zirconia and yttria-doped ceria.
