Claims
- 1. A color correcting polarizer comprising:
a polarizer layer; and at least one discotic film layer, wherein the discotic film layer is optically transparent within the range of visible wavelength, and works as a polarizer in the wavelength ranges at least from 380 to 500 nm and/or from 600 to 780 nm.
- 2. The color correcting polarizer according to claim 1, wherein the discotic film layer has an absorption peak in the wavelength range between 380 and 500 nm.
- 3. The color correcting polarizer according to claim 1, wherein the discotic film layer has an absorption peak in the wavelength range between 600 and 780 nm.
- 4. The color correcting polarizer according to claim 1, wherein the polarizer layer and the at least one discotic film layer have parallel or perpendicular transmission axes.
- 5. The color correcting polarizer according to claim 1, wherein the discotic film layer is formed from a lyotropic liquid crystal based on discotic dichroic dye molecules.
- 6. The color correcting polarizer according to claim 1, wherein the discotic film layer works as an E-type polarizer.
- 7. The color correcting polarizer according to claim 6, wherein the E-type polarizer layer has negative birefringence.
- 8. The color correcting polarizer according to claim 1, wherein the discotic film layer is a thin crystal film polarizer.
- 9. The color correcting polarizer according to claim 1, wherein the polarizer layer is a thin crystal film polarizer.
- 10. The color correcting polarizer according to claim 2, wherein the discotic film layer is made of the sulfonic derivatives of phenanthro-9′,10′:2,3-quinoxaline of the general structural formula.
- 11. The color correcting polarizer according to claim 2, wherein the discotic film layer is made of a sulfonic derivative of phenanthro-9′, 10′:2,3-quinoxaline of at least one of the structural formulas I-VIII:
- 12. The color correcting polarizer according to claim 1 further comprises at least one layer of an adhesive material and at least one substrate.
- 13. The color correcting polarizer according to claim 12 wherein the substrate is birefringent.
- 14. The color correcting polarizer according to claim 12 wherein the substrate is non-birefringent.
- 15. The color correcting polarizer according to claim 1, further comprises a protective layer.
- 16. The color correcting polarizer according to claim 1 further comprises an antireflective layer.
- 17. The color correcting polarizer according to claim 1 further comprises an antiglare layer.
- 18. A liquid crystal cell comprising:
a front panel; a rear panel; liquid crystal placed between the front and rear panels; and a color correcting polarizer, wherein the color correcting polarizer comprises at least one polarizer layer and at least one discotic film layer, said discotic film layer is optically transparent within the range of visible wavelength and works as a polarizer in the wavelength ranges at least from 380 to 500 nm and/or from 600 to 780 nm.
- 19. The liquid crystal cell according to claim 18, wherein the polarizer layer and at least one discotic film layer have parallel or perpendicular transmission axes.
- 20. The liquid crystal cell according to claim 18, wherein the discotic film polarizer layer is also a polarizer in the visible wavelength range.
- 21. The liquid crystal cell according to claim 20, wherein the discotic film layer has the predetermined transmission spectrum which is a combination of spectra of a neutral polarizer and a color correcting polarizer.
- 22. The liquid crystal cell according to claim 18, wherein the discotic film layer has an absorption peak between 380 and 500 nm.
- 23. The liquid crystal cell according to claim 18, wherein the discotic film layer has an absorption peak in the wavelength region between 600 and 780 nm.
- 24. The liquid crystal cell according to claim 18, wherein at least one polarizer layer is O-type polarizer.
- 25. The liquid crystal cell according to claim 24 wherein the O-type polarizer is an iodine-based polymer polarizer.
- 26. The liquid crystal cell according to claim 18, wherein at least one polarizer layer is E-type polarizer.
- 27. The liquid crystal cell according to claim 26 wherein the E-type polarizer is formed from a lyotropic crystal based on discotic dichroic dye molecules.
- 28. The liquid crystal cell according to claim 18, wherein the discotic film layer works as an E-type polarizer.
- 29. The liquid crystal cell according to claim 28, wherein the discotic film layer is formed from lyotropic liquid crystal based on discotic dichroic dye molecules.
- 30. The liquid crystal cell according to claim 28, wherein the E-type polarizer layer has negative birefringence.
- 31. The liquid crystal cell according to claim 18, wherein the discotic film layer is a thin crystal film polarizer.
- 32. The liquid crystal cell according to claim 18, wherein the polarizer layer is a thin crystal film.
- 33. The liquid crystal cell according to claim 22, wherein the E-type polarizer layer is made from sulfonic derivatives of phenanthro-9′, 10′:2,3-quinoxaline of the general structural formula:
- 34. The liquid crystal cell according to claim 22, wherein the E-type polarizer layer is made of a sulfonic derivative of phenanthro-9′,10′:2,3-quinoxaline of at least one of the structural formulas I-VIII,
- 35. The liquid crystal cell according to claim 18, further comprises an antiglare or antireflection coating placed onto an outer surface of the liquid crystal cell.
- 36. The liquid crystal cell according to claim 18, further comprises a reflective layer.
- 37. The liquid crystal cell according to claim 36, wherein at least part of the reflective layer possesses specular reflective properties.
- 38. The liquid crystal cell according to claim 36, wherein at least part of the reflective layer possesses diffusive reflective properties.
- 39. The liquid crystal cell according to claim 36, wherein at least part of the reflective layer is transmissive.
- 40. The liquid crystal cell according to claim 18, wherein the discotic film layer functions as a retarder, or a color filter, or a combination of thereof.
- 41. The liquid crystal cell according to claim 18, wherein the discotic film layer is applied onto the polarizer inside the cell.
