Claims
- 1. In a television system including a source of an intermediate frequency (IF) signal including an IF picture carrier with vestigial sideband amplitude modulation in accordance with a baseband luminance signal and an amplitude-modulated subcarrier that is completely included in one sideband of said IF picture carrier, a combination of apparatus comprising:
- an in-phase synchronous demodulator responsive to said IF signal for recovering said baseband luminance component as an in-phase synchronous demodulator response;
- a quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator for recovering said amplitude-modulated subcarrier without substantial accompanying baseband luminance component as a quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response;
- subcarrier demodulation circuitry for synchronously demodulating said amplitude-modulated subcarrier as taken from said quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response, to recover at least one modulating signal from said amplitude-modulated subcarrier:
- an impulse noise detector of a type for generating an output control signal responsive to said quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response, said output control signal being indicative of whether or not an appreciable amount of detected impulse noise occurs in said quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response:
- a delay line responsive to said quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response for supplying a delayed quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response; and
- amplitude-modulated subcarrier output means controlled by said output control signal, for applying said delayed quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response to said subcarrier demodulation circuitry for demodulating said amplitude-modulated subcarrier therein, when said output control signal indicates there is not an appreciable amount of detected impulse noise currently occurring in said quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response, and for substituting for a current value of said delayed quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response supplied to said subcarrier demodulation circuitry, a continuing previous value of said delayed quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response, when said output control signal indicates there is an appreciable amount of detected impulse noise currently occurring in said quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response, wherein said amplitude-modulated subcarrier output means includes:
- means for temporarily storing said quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response; and
- means for determining, from the temporarily stored quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response, the continuing previous value of said delayed quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response for substituting for said current value of said delayed quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response supplied to said subcarrier demodulation circuitry.
- 2. A combination of apparatus as set forth in claim 1, wherein said combination of apparatus is included in said television system with said source of IF signal being of a type tending to respond to impulse noise with ringing at a natural frequency that is detected as midband video frequency response by said in-phase and quadrature-phase synchronous demodulators; and wherein said delay line provides the delayed quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response after a delay of about half a cycle of said midband video frequency.
- 3. In a television system including a source of an intermediate frequency (IF) signal including an IF picture carrier with vestigial sideband amplitude modulation in accordance with a baseband luminance signal and an amplitude-modulated subcarrier that is completely included in one sideband of said IF picture carrier, said source of IF signal being of a type tending to respond to impulse noise with ringing at a natural frequency that is detected as midband video frequency response by said in-phase and quadrature-phase synchronous demodulators a combination of apparatus comprising:
- an in-phase synchronous demodulator responsive to said IF signal for recovering said baseband luminance component as an in-phase synchronous demodulator response;
- a quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator for recovering said amplitude-modulated subcarrier without substantial accompanying baseband luminance component as a quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response;
- subcarrier demodulation circuitry for synchronously demodulating said amplitude-modulated subcarrier as taken from said quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response, to recover at least one modulating signal from said amplitude-modulated subcarrier;
- an impulse noise detector of a type for generating an output control signal responsive to said quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response, said output control signal being indicative of whether or not an appreciable amount of detected impulse noise occurs in said quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response;
- a delay line responsive to said quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response for supplying a delayed quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response after a delay of about half a cycle of said midband video frequency; and
- amplitude-modulated subcarrier output means controlled by said output control signal, for applying said delayed quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response to said subcarrier demodulation circuitry for demodulating said amplitude-modulated subcarrier therein, when said output control signal indicates there is not an appreciable amount of detected impulse noise currently occurring in said quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response, and for substituting for a current value of said delayed quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response supplied to said subcarrier demodulation circuitry a continuing previous value of said delayed quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response, when said output control signal indicates there is an appreciable amount of detected impulse noise currently occurring in said quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response, wherein said amplitude-modulated subcarrier output means includes:
- pulse stretching means having an input connection to which the output control signal from said impulse noise detector is supplied and having an output connection from which a stretched pulse response to said output control signal is supplied, the stretched pulse response having a given amount of stretch time somewhat longer than one cycle of said natural frequency; and
- a track-and-hold circuit having an input for receiving from said output of said delay line said delayed quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response, a control terminal for receiving said stretched pulse response from said output connection of said pulse stretching means, and an output for supplying the current value of said delayed quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response when said stretched pulse response is to an output control signal that indicates there is not an appreciable amount of said detected impulse noise accompanying said quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response and for supplying a held value of said delayed quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response when said stretched pulse response is to an output control signal that indicates there is an appreciable amount of said detected impulse noise accompanying said delayed quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response.
- 4. A combination of apparatus as set forth in claim 3 wherein said given amount of stretch time is between 600 and 800 nanoseconds.
- 5. In a television system including a source of an intermediate frequency (IF) signal including an IF picture carrier with vestigial sideband amplitude modulation in accordance with a baseband luminance signal and an amplitude-modulated subcarrier that is completely included in one sideband of said IF picture carrier, a combination of apparatus comprising:
- an in-phase synchronous demodulator responsive to said IF signal for recovering said baseband luminance component as an in-phase synchronous demodulator response;
- a quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator for recovering said amplitude-modulated subcarrier without substantial accompanying baseband luminance component as a quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response;
- subcarrier demodulation circuitry for synchronously demodulating said amplitude-modulated subcarrier as taken from said quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response, to recover at least one modulating signal from said amplitude-modulated subcarrier;
- an impulse noise detector of a type for generating an output control signal responsive to said in-phase synchronous demodulator response and to said quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response, said output control signal being indicative of whether or not an appreciable amount of detected impulse noise occurs in said quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response;
- a delay line responsive to said quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response for supplying a delayed quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response; and
- amplitude-modulated subcarrier output means controlled by said output control signal, for applying said delayed quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response to said subcarrier demodulation circuitry for demodulating said amplitude-modulated subcarrier therein, when said output control signal indicates there is not an appreciable amount of detected impulse noise currently occuring in said quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response, and for substituting for a current value of said delayed quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response supplied to said subcarrier demodulation circuitry a continuing previous value of said delayed quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response, when said output control signal indicates there is an appreciable amount of detected impulse noise currently occurring in said quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response, wherein said amplitude-modulated subcarrier output means includes:
- means for temporarily storing said quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response; and
- means for determining, from the temporarily stored quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response, the continuing previous value of said delayed quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response for substituting for said current value of said delayed quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response supplied to said subcarrier demodulation circuitry.
- 6. A combination of apparatus as set forth in claim 5, wherein said combination of apparatus is included in said television system with said source of IF signal being of a type tending to respond to impulse noise with ringing at a natural frequency that is detected as midband video frequency response by said in-phase and quadrature-phase synchronous demodulators and wherein said delay line provides the delayed quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response after a delay of about half a cycle of said midband video frequency.
- 7. In a television system including a source of an intermediate frequency (IF) signal including an IF picture carrier with vestigial sideband amplitude modulation in accordance with a baseband luminance signal and an amplitude-modulated subcarrier that is completely included in one sideband of said IF picture carrier, said source of IF signal being of a type tending to respond to impulse noise with ringing at a natural frequency that is detected as midband video frequency response by said in-phase and quadrature-phase synchronous demodulators, a combination of apparatus comprising:
- an in-phase synchronous demodulator responsive to said IF signal for recovering said baseband luminance component as an in-phase synchronous demodulator response:
- a quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator for recovering said amplitude-modulated subcarrier without substantial accompanying baseband luminance component as a quadrature,phase synchronous demodulator response;
- subcarrier demodulation circuitry for synchronously demodulating said amplitude-modulated subcarrier as taken from said quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response, to recover at least one modulating signal from said amplitude-modulated subcarrier;
- an impulse noise detector of a type for generating an output control signal responsive to said quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response, said output control signal being indicative of whether or not an appreciable amount of detected impulse noise occurs in said quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response;
- an impulse noise detector of a type for generating an output control signal responsive to said in-phase synchronous demodulator response and to said quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response, said output control signal being indicative of whether or not an appreciable amount of detected impulse noise occurs in said quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response;
- a delay line responsive to said quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response for supplying a delayed quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response after a delay of about half a cycle of said midband video frequency; and
- amplitude-modulated subcarrier output means controlled by said output control signal, for applying said delayed quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response to said subcarrier demodulation circuitry for demodulating said amplitude-modulated subcarrier therein, when said output control signal indicates there is not an appreciable amount of detected impulse noise currently occurring in said quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response, and for substituting for a current value of said delayed quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response supplied to said subcarrier demodulation circuitry a continuing previous value of said delayed quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response, when said output control signal indicates there is an appreciable amount of detected impulse noise currently occurring in said quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response, wherein said amplitude-modulated subcarrier output means includes:
- pulse stretching means having an input connection to which the output control signal from said impulse noise detector is supplied and having an output connection from which a stretched pulse response to said output control signal is supplied, the stretched pulse response having a given amount of stretch time somewhat longer than one cycle of said natural frequency; and
- a track-and-hold circuit having an input for receiving from said output of said delay line said delayed quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response, a control terminal for receiving said stretched pulse response from said output connection of said pulse stretching means, and an output for supplying the current value of said delayed quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response when said stretched pulse response is to an output control signal that indicates there is not an appreciable amount of said detected impulse noise accompanying said quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response and for supplying a held value of said delayed quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response when said stretched pulse response is to an output control signal that indicates there is an appreciable amount of said detected impulse noise accompanying said delayed quadrature-phase synchronous demodulator response.
- 8. In a television system including a source of an intermediate frequency (IF) signal including an IF picture carrier amplitude modulated with video information, a combination of apparatus comprising:
- synchronous demodulator means responsive to said IF signal for providing an in-phase first output video signal that has both luminance and chrominance components and for providing a quadrature-phase second output video signal that has a chrominance component but substantially no luminance component; and
- chroma circuitry responsive to said quadrature-phase second output video signal for generating first and second color-difference signals.
- 9. A combination of apparatus as set forth in claim 8 further comprising:
- an impulse noise detector of a type for generating an output control signal responsive to said second output video signal, said output control signal being indicative of whether or not an appreciable amount of detected impulse noise occurs in said second output video signal;
- a delay line responsive to said second output video signal for supplying a delayed second output video signal; and
- second output video signal output means controlled by said output control signal, for applying said delayed second output video signal to said chroma circuitry as an input signal thereto, when said output control signal indicates there is not an appreciable amount of detected impulse noise currently occurring in said second output video signal, and for substituting for a current value of said delayed second output video signal a continuing previous value of said delayed second output video signal for application to said chroma circuitry as an alternative input signal thereto, when said output control signal indicates there is an appreciable amount of detected impulse noise currently occurring in said second output video signal.
- 10. A combination of apparatus as set forth in claim 9 further comprising:
- means for temporarily storing said second output video signal; and
- means for determining, from the temporarily stored second output video signal, the continuing previous value of said delayed second output video signal for substituting for said current value of said second output video signal supplied to said subcarrier demodulation circuitry as said alternative input signal thereto.
- 11. A combination of apparatus as set forth in claim 10, wherein said combination of apparatus is included in said television system with said source of IF signal being of a type tending to respond to impulse noise with ringing at a natural frequency that is detected as midband video frequency response by said synchronous demodulator means; and wherein said delay line provides the delayed second output video signal after a delay of about half a cycle of said midband video frequency.
- 12. A combination of apparatus as set forth in claim 11 wherein said amplitude-modulated subcarrier output means includes:
- pulse stretching means having an input connection to which the output control signal from said impulse noise detector is supplied and having an output connection from which a stretched pulse response to said output control signal is supplied, the stretched pulse response having a given amount of stretch time somewhat longer than one cycle of said natural frequency; and
- a track-and-hold circuit having an input for receiving from said output of said delay line said second output video signal, a control terminal for receiving said stretched pulse response from said output connection of said pulse stretching means, and an output for supplying the current value of said delayed second output video signal when said stretched pulse response is to an output control signal that indicates there is not an appreciable amount of said detected impulse noise accompanying said second output video signal and for supplying a held value of said delayed second output video signal when said stretched pulse response is to an output control signal that indicates there is an appreciable amount of said detected impulse noise accompanying said delayed second output video signal.
- 13. A combination of apparatus as set forth in claim 8 further comprising:
- an impulse noise detector of a type for generating an output control signal responsive to said first output video signal and to said second output video signal, said output control signal being indicative of whether or not an appreciable amount of detected impulse noise occurs in said first output video signal or said second output video signal;
- a delay line responsive to said second output video signal for supplying a delayed second output video signal; and
- second output video signal output means controlled by said output control signal, for applying said delayed second output video signal to said chroma circuitry as an input signal thereto, when said output control signal indicates there is not an appreciable amount of detected impulse noise currently occurring in said second output video signal, and for substituting for a current value of said delayed second output video signal a continuing previous value of said delayed second output video signal for application to said chroma circuitry as an alternative input signal thereto, when said output control signal indicates there is an appreciable amount of detected impulse noise currently occurring in said second output video signal.
- 14. A combination of apparatus as set forth in claim 13 further comprising:
- means for temporarily storing said second output video signal; and
- means for determining, from the temporarily stored second output video signal, the continuing previous value of said delayed second output video signal for substituting for said current value of said second output video signal supplied to said subcarrier demodulation circuitry as said alternative input signal thereto.
- 15. A combination of apparatus as set forth in claim 14, wherein said combination of apparatus is included in said television system with said source of IF signal being of a type tending to respond to impulse noise with ringing at a natural frequency that is detected as midband video frequency response by said synchronous demodulator means; and wherein said delay line provides the delayed second output video signal after a delay of about half a cycle of said midband video frequency.
- 16. A combination of apparatus as set forth in claim 15, wherein said amplitude-modulated subcarrier output means includes:
- pulse stretching means having an input connection to which the output control signal from said impulse noise detector is supplied and having an output connection from which a stretched pulse response to said output control signal is supplied, the stretched pulse response having a given amount of stretch time somewhat longer than one cycle of said natural frequency; and
- a track-and-hold circuit having an input for receiving from said output of said delay line said second output video signal, a control terminal for receiving said stretched pulse response from said output connection of said pulse stretching means, and an output for supplying the current value of said delayed second output video signal when said stretched pulse response is to an output control signal that indicates there is not an appreciable amount of said detected impulse noise accompanying said second output video signal and for supplying a held value of said delayed second output video signal when said stretched pulse response is to an output control signal that indicates there is an appreciable amount of said detected impulse noise accompanying said delayed second output video signal.
