Claims
- 1. An anti-theft device for a vehicle, the anti-theft device being adapted to detachably engage a steering wheel rotatably mounted on a steering column, the steering wheel having a rim defining an outer perimeter of the steering wheel, the anti-theft device comprising:an elongated member having a first free end and a longitudinal surface, the elongated member being adapted to abut the steering column, the first free end extending generally radially outwardly away from the steering column past the outer perimeter of the steering wheel; at least one spoke engaging member disposed on the elongated member and adapted to engage the steering wheel and prevent rotation of the steering wheel relative to the elongated member; at least one column engaging member having a generally transverse part and at least one connecting part, the at least one column engaging member being adapted to detachably engage the elongated member to, in combination with the elongated member, substantially surround the steering column in an installed configuration in which the spoke engaging member is engaged with the steering wheel; and a locking mechanism adapted to detachably lock the anti-theft device in the installed configuration, wherein a portion of the longitudinal surface of the elongated member is in facing opposition with a portion of the transverse part of the at least one column engaging member.
- 2. The anti-theft device of claim 1, wherein the elongated member has a cross-sectional shape of one of a square, a rectangle, a circle, an ellipse, and a polygon.
- 3. The anti-theft device of claim 1, wherein the at least one spoke engaging member comprises at least one generally L-shaped beam having one leg that is adapted to overlay a side portion of the steering wheel.
- 4. The anti-theft device of claim 3, wherein the side portion of the steering wheel is a side generally parallel to the steering column of the at least one spoke of the steering wheel, the side facing generally away from the elongated member.
- 5. The anti-theft device of claim 1 wherein the at least one column engaging member, in combination with the elongated member, completely surrounds the steering column.
- 6. A combination anti-theft device and steering wheel for a vehicle, the anti-theft device being adapted to detachably engage the steering wheel, the combination comprising:the steering wheel being rotatably mounted on a steering column having a longitudinal axis, the steering having a hub with a plurality of spokes, each of the plurality of spokes having a rear side, which faces generally toward the steering column in a direction generally parallel to the longitudinal axis of the steering column, and a side portion, which is adjacent to the rear side and faces generally away from the steering column in a direction generally perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the steering column; an elongated member positioned to abut the steering column; at least one spoke engaging members disposed on the elongated member and adapted to engage the steering wheel, the at least one spoke engaging member being in close proximity to and overlying the rear side of one of the plurality of spokes and the side portion of the one of the plurality of spokes that faces generally away from the elongated member to reduce rotation of the steering wheel relative to the elongated member; at least one column engaging member having a generally transverse part and at least one connecting part, the at least one column engaging member being adapted to detachably engage the elongated member to, in combination with the elongated member, substantially surround the steering column in an installed configuration in which the spoke engaging member is engaged with the steering wheel; and a locking mechanism adapted to detachably lock the anti-theft device in the installed configuration, wherein a portion of each of the at least one spoke engaging members is positioned proximate to the side portion, which faces generally away from the elongated member, of one of the plurality of spokes to limit rotation of the steering wheel relative to the elongated member.
- 7. The combination of claim 6, wherein when the anti-theft device is in the installed configuration, a portion of a longitudinal surface of the elongated member is in facing opposition with a portion of the transverse part of the at least one column engaging member.
- 8. The combination of claim 6, wherein at least two spoke engaging members are disposed on the elongated member and are adapted to engage the steering wheel and limit rotation of the steering wheel relative to the elongated member, each of the at least two spoke engaging members overlying the rear side of one of the plurality of spokes and the side portion of the one of the plurality of spokes that faces generally away from the elongated member.
- 9. The combination of claim 8, wherein the at least two spoke engaging members are located on opposite sides of the hub of the steering wheel.
- 10. The combination of claim 9, wherein a portion of each of the at least two spoke engaging members abuts the side portion of a different one of the plurality of spokes.
- 11. The combination of claim 6, wherein each of the at least one spoke engaging members is configured to be located along and in close proximity to the rear side and a side portion of one of the plurality of spokes when the anti-theft device is in the installed configuration to substantially prevent the rotation of the steering wheel relative to the elongated member.
