Claims
- 1. An apparatus for mowing grass comprising:
a lower unit assembly; and an upper handle assembly coupled to said lower unit assembly, said handle assembly being securable in two or more positions, a first of said two or more positions intended to effect a grass mowing operation, said lower unit comprising a rear driving assembly, a front roller assembly, a grass-cutting assembly interposed between the front roller assembly and the rear driving assembly, and a drive-train gear assembly coupling the rear driving assembly to the grass-cutting assembly for rotatingly driving said grass-cutting assembly during forward movement of the apparatus.
- 2. The apparatus as in claim 1 wherein said grass-cutting assembly is secured to a first drive shaft, and wherein said drive-train gear assembly comprises:
a first drive gear; a second transducer gear; a drive shaft; and a third gear secured to said first drive shaft, whereupon movement of the apparatus drives said first drive gear which in turn drives said second gear, said second gear in turn driving said third gear and said first drive shaft, thereby driving said grass-cutting assembly.
- 3. The apparatus as in claim 2 further comprising a second drive shaft, said rear driving assembly and said first gear being fixedly secured to said second drive shaft such that rolling movement of the apparatus rotatingly drives said second drive shaft, which in turn drives said first gear.
- 4. The apparatus as in claim 2 further comprising a third drive shaft arranged between said first and second drive shafts, said second gear rotating freely about said third drive shaft.
- 5. The apparatus as in claim 4 further comprising a brushing attached to said third drive shaft, said second gear being adapted to rotate freely about said brushing.
- 6. The apparatus as in claim 2 wherein said second gear comprises a first portion and a second portion, said first and second portions being affixed to each other such that they turn in unison, the first portion of said second gear engaging said first gear and the second portion of said second gear engaging said third gear.
- 7. The apparatus as in claim 1 further comprising a bed knife arranged generally forward of, below and parallel to the drive shaft of said grass-cutting assembly.
- 8. The apparatus as in claim 7 further comprising biasing means to continuously urge the drive shaft carrying said grass-cutting assembly upwardly away from said bed knife to maintain a distance therebetween.
- 9. The apparatus as in claim 1 wherein said rear driving assembly comprises first and second roller sub-assemblies positioned adjacent one another along said first drive shaft.
- 10. The apparatus as in claim 2 further comprising a clutch allowing the rear driving assembly to move in the both forward and reverse directions while continuing to provide unidirectional driving force to said grass-cutting assembly.
- 11. The apparatus as in claim 1 wherein said front roller assembly comprises a roller and a drive shaft, said drive shaft being arranged substantially parallel to the first drive shaft of said rear driving assembly, said roller rotating freely about said roller drive shaft.
- 12. The apparatus as in claim 1 further comprising adjustment means to lower or raise the height at which the grass is cut.
- 13. The apparatus as in claim 1 further comprising a grass-catching assembly arranged adjacent said grass-cutting assembly.
- 14. The apparatus as in claim 13 further comprising a grass deflector for deflecting grass cut by said grass-cutting assembly to said grass-catching assembly.
- 15. The apparatus as in claim 13 wherein said grass-cutting assemby is releasably secured to the apparatus adjacent said front roller assembly.
- 16. The apparatus as in claim 1 further comprising blade sharpening means.
- 17. The apparatus as in claim 1 wherein said upper handle assembly comprises a U-shaped member having an open end, a closed end and two lateral portions, and a height-adjusting cross member extending between the two lateral portions of said U-shaped member, the opposing ends of said cross member being slidably received within the lateral portions of said handle, the closed end of said handle defining an upper end when the apparatus is in use and the open end being pivotally secured to said lower unit.
- 18. The apparatus as in claim 17 wherein said upper handle assembly is movable between a first position and a second position.
- 19. The apparatus as in claim 18 wherein said lower unit assembly includes means allowing for said handle to be releasably positioned in a plurality of positions while said apparatus is still in a grass-mowing mode.
- 20. The apparatus as in claim 19 wherein said lower unit assembly including two or more slots for slidably receiving an end of the cross member of said upper handle assembly to releasably secure the upper handle assembly in the first position.
- 21. The apparatus as in claim 18 wherein said lower unit assembly including means allowing for said handle to be releasably secured in the second position after the handle has been moved from the first position to the second position.
- 22. The apparatus as in claim 21 wherein said lower unit assembly includes at least one slot for slidably receiving an end of the cross member of said upper handle assembly to releasably secure the upper handle assembly in the second position.
- 23. The apparatus as in claim 18 wherein the front roller assembly of said apparatus is adapted to engage the ground surface upon which the apparatus travels when the upper handle assembly is in the first position and the apparatus moves in a first grass mowing direction.
- 24. The apparatus as in claim 23 wherein the front roller assembly of said apparatus is adjusted to be disposed a slight distance from and to avoid engagement of the ground surface upon which the apparatus travels when the upper handle assembly is in the second position and the apparatus moves in a second rolling direction, said second rolling direction being opposite from the first grass mowing direction.
- 25. An apparatus for mowing and rolling grass comprising:
a lower mowing-rolling unit; a handle coupled to said mowing rolling unit and securable in two or more positions, a first of said two or more positions for performing grass mowing operations, a second of said two or more positions for performing grass rolling operations, said lower unit comprising a rear driving assembly, a front roller assembly, a grass-cutting assembly interposed between the front roller assembly and the rear driving assembly, and a drive-train gear assembly coupling the rear driving assembly to the grass-cutting assembly for rotatingly driving said grass-cutting assembly during forward movement of the apparatus, said drive-train gear assembly comprising a first drive gear, a second transducer gear, a drive shaft and a third gear secured to said first drive shaft, whereupon forward movement of the apparatus drives said first drive gear which in turn drives said second gear, said second gear in turn driving said third gear and said first drive shaft, thereby driving said grass-cutting assembly.
