Claims
- 1. A hole making and threading tool for use in a machine tool which is adapted to simultaneously rotate a cutting tool about its axis, move said cutting tool axially to form a hole in an imperforate surface of a solid portion of a workpiece, and thereafter concurrently move said axis axially and orbitally to form a thread, said tool comprising:
- a body having a shank at one end, a hole making means at the other end for making said hole in said imperforate surface of said solid portion of said workpiece, said hole having a wall, and a thread making means intermediate said one end and said other end, said thread making means having a maximum diameter which is no greater than the maximum diameter of said hole making means; and at least one chip removal passage extending from said other end through said thread making means, whereby said thread making means can enter said hole made by said hole making means in said imperforate surface of said solid portion of said workpiece without interference with said wall of said hole to thereafter form said thread in said wall, said hole making means comprising an end mill.
- 2. A hole making and threading tool for use in a machine tool which is adapted to simultaneously rotate a cutting tool about its axis, move said cutting tool axially to form a hole in an imperforate surface of a solid portion of a workpiece, and thereafter concurrently move said axis axially and orbitally to form a thread, said tool comprising:
- a body having a shank at one end, a hole making means at an other end for making said hole in said imperforate surface of said solid portion of said workpiece, said hole having a wall, and a thread making means intermediate said one end and said other end, said thread making means having a maximum diameter which is no greater than the maximum diameter of said hole making means; and at least one chip removal passage extending from said other end through said thread making means, whereby said thread making means can enter said hole made by said hole making means in said imperforate surface of said solid portion of said workpiece without interference with said wall of said hole to thereafter form said thread in said wall, said hole making means comprising a hollow drill point.
- 3. A hole making and threading tool for use in a machine tool which is adapted to simultaneously rotate a cutting tool about its axis, move said cutting tool axially to form a hole in an imperforate surface of a solid portion of a workpiece, and thereafter concurrently move said axis axially and orbitally to form a thread, said tool comprising:
- a body having a shank at one end, a hole making means at an other end for making said hole in said imperforate surface of said solid portion of said workpiece, said hole having a wall, a thread making means intermediate said one end and said other end; at least one chip removal passage extending from said other end through said thread making means; and chamfer cutting means disposed adjacent said thread making means; and
- said thread making means having a maximum diameter which is no greater than the maximum diameter of said hole making means whereby said thread making means can enter said hole made by said hole making means in said imperforate surface of said solid portion of said workpiece without interference with said wall of said hole to thereafter form said thread in said wall.
- 4. A hole making and threading tool for use in a machine tool which is adapted to simultaneously rotate a cutting tool about its axis, move said cutting tool axially to form a hole in an imperforate surface of a solid portion of a workpiece, and thereafter concurrently move said axis axially and orbitally to form a thread, said tool comprising:
- a body having a shank at one end, a hole making means at an other end for making said hole in said imperforate surface of said solid portion of said workpiece, said hole having a wall, and a thread making means intermediate said one end and said other end;
- at least one chip removal passage integral with said body, said at least one chip removal passage extending from said hole making means through said thread making means, said at least one chip removal passage comprising at least one spiral flute; and
- said thread making means having a maximum diameter which is no greater than the maximum diameter of said hole making means whereby said thread making means can enter said hole made by said hole making means in said imperforate surface of said solid portion of said workpiece without interference with said wall of said hole to thereafter form said thread in said wall.
- 5. A hole making and threading tool for use in a machine tool which is adapted to simultaneously rotate a cutting tool about its axis, move said cutting tool axially to form a hole in an imperforate surface of a solid portion of a workpiece, and thereafter concurrently move said axis axially and orbitally to form a thread, said tool comprising:
- a body having a shank at one end, a hole making means comprising an end mill at an other end for making said hole in said imperforate surface of said solid portion of said workpiece, said hole having a wall; a thread milling means intermediate said one end and said other end; and
- at least one chip removal passage extending from said hole making means through said thread milling means, said thread milling means having a maximum diameter no greater than the maximum diameter of said end mill in said imperforate surface of said solid portion of said workpiece whereby said thread milling means can enter a hole made by said end mill without interference with said wall of said hole to thereafter form said thread in said wall.
- 6. The invention as claimed in claim 4, further comprising a main fluid passage extending through said shank and said thread making means to a point adjacent said hole making means, and at least one branch passage extending from said main fluid passage to the surface of said at least one spiral flute, adjacent said hole making means.
- 7. The invention as claimed in claim 2, wherein said hollow drill point comprises a recess between the cutting edges of said hole making means said recess being centered on the rotational axis of said tool.
- 8. The invention as claimed in claim 3 or 4, wherein said hole making means comprises a drill point and said thread making means comprises a thread-form mill.
- 9. The invention as claimed in claim 3 or 4, wherein said hole making means comprises an end mill and said thread making means comprises a thread-form mill.
- 10. The invention as defined in claim 1, 2 or 3 further comprising a main fluid passage extending through said shank and said thread making means to a point adjacent said hole making means.
- 11. The invention as claimed in claim 8, wherein said drill point is a hollow drill point.
- 12. The invention as claimed in claim 11, wherein said hollow drill point comprises a recess between the cutting edges of said hole making means, said recess being centered on the rotational axis of said tool.
- 13. The invention as claimed in claim 1, 2 or 4 further comprising a chamfer cutting bit disposed between said thread making means and said shank.
- 14. The invention as claimed in claim 10, further comprising a branch passage extending from said main fluid passage to the surface of said at least one chip removal passage, adjacent said hole making means.
- 15. The invention as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein said thread making means comprises a thread-form mill.
- 16. A method for producing a threaded hole in an imperforate surface of a solid portion of a workpiece comprising the steps of:
- providing an elongated tool having an axis of rotation, a hole making means at one end, a thread making means on the side thereof, said thread making means having a maximum diameter which is no greater than said hole making means, and chamfer cutting means disposed adjacent said thread making means;
- rotating said tool about said axis of rotation while shifting it axially to move said hole making means against and into said imperforate surface of said solid portion of said workpiece to form a hole in said imperforate surface of said solid portion of said workpiece, said hole having a wall therein;
- while continuing to rotate said tool, shifting said tool further axially to move said chamfer cutting means into said imperforate surface of said solid portion of said workpiece to form a chamfer on said hole made by said hole making means;
- while continuing to rotate said tool, concurrently moving said axis of rotation orbitally around said hole and axially along said hole to produce threads in said wall of said hole;
- displacing said axis of rotation back to the center of said hole; and
- retracting said tool from said hole.
- 17. A method for producing a threaded hole in an imperforate surface of a solid portion of a workpiece comprising the steps of:
- providing an elongated tool having an axis of rotation, an end mill at one end and a thread making means on the side thereof, said thread making means having a maximum diameter which is no greater than said end mill diameter;
- rotating said tool about said axis of rotation while shifting it axially to move said end mill against and into said imperforate surface of said solid portion of said workpiece to form a hole in said imperforate surface of said solid portion of said workpiece, said hole having a wall therein;
- while continuing to rotate said tool, concurrently moving said axis of rotation orbitally around said hole and axially along said hole to produce threads in said wall of said hole;
- displacing said axis of rotation radially back to the center of said hole; and
- retracting said tool from said hole.
- 18. The method as claimed in claim 16 wherein prior to said step of concurrently moving said axis of rotation orbitally and axially said tool is moved axially out of said hole to provide a clearance at the bottom of said hole for said hole making means.
- 19. The method as claimed in claim 16 or 17, wherein said tool is shifted axially one thread pitch during orbital movement to produce helical threads in the wall of said hole.
- 20. The method as claimed in claim 19, wherein said axis of rotation of said tool is moved orbitally at least three hundred sixty degrees around said hole.
- 21. The method as claimed in claim 16 or 17 further comprising the step of introducing a fluid under pressure along a passage through said tool into said hole adjacent the bottom thereof and causing said fluid to flow along the outer periphery of said tool toward the mouth of said hole to scavenge waste material from said hole.
- 22. The method as claimed in claim 16 or 17, wherein said thread making means is a thread milling means.
- 23. The method as claimed in claim 17 wherein prior to said step of concurrently moving said axis of rotation orbitally and axially said tool is moved axially out of said hole to provide a clearance at the bottom of said hole for said end mill.
- 24. In combination with a machine tool of the type having a spindle adapted to simultaneously rotate a cutting tool about its axis and feed said cutting tool axially for cutting a hole in an imperforate surface of a solid portion of a workpiece and thereafter concurrently move said axis in an orbital path and axially whereby a point on said cutting tool defines a helical path, the improvement comprising a hole making and threading tool having:
- an elongated straight body having a shank at one end; a hole making means at the other end for making said hole in said imperforate surface of said solid portion of said workpiece, said hole having a wall; and a thread making means intermediate said one end and said other end; and
- at least one chip removal passage extending from said hole making means through said thread making means; and
- said thread making means having a maximum diameter which is no greater than the maximum diameter of said hole making means whereby said thread making means can enter said hole made by said hole making means in said imperforate surface of said solid portion of said workpiece without interference with said wall of said hole to thereafter form a thread in said wall, said hole making means comprising an end mill.
- 25. In combination with a machine tool of the type having a spindle adapted to simultaneously rotate a cutting tool about its axis and feed said cutting tool axially for cutting a hole in an imperforate surface of a solid portion of a workpiece and thereafter concurrently move said axis in an orbital path and axially whereby a point on said cutting tool defines a helical path, the improvement comprising a hole making and threading tool having:
- an elongated straight body having a shank at one end; a hole making means at the other end for making said hole in said imperforate surface of said solid portion of said workpiece, said hole having a wall; and a thread making means intermediate said one end and said other end;
- at least one chip removal passage extending from said hole making means through said thread making means; and
- said thread making means having a maximum diameter which is no greater than the maximum diameter of said hole making means whereby said thread making means can enter said hole made by said hole making means in said imperforate surface of said solid portion of said workpiece without interference with said wall of said hole to thereafter form a thread in said wall, said hole making means comprising a hollow drill point.
- 26. In combination with a machine tool of the type having a spindle adapted to simultaneously rotate a cutting tool about its axis and feed said cutting tool axially for cutting a hole in an imperforate surface of a solid portion of a workpiece and thereafter concurrently move said axis in an orbital path and axially whereby a point on said cutting tool defines a helical path, the improvement comprising a hole making and threading tool having:
- an elongated straight body having a shank at one end; a hole making means at the other end for making said hole in said imperforate surface of said solid portion of said workpiece, said hole having a wall; and a thread making means intermediate said one end and said other end;
- at least one chip removal passage extending from said hole making means through said thread making means; and chamfer cutting means disposed adjacent said thread making means; and
- said thread making means having a maximum diameter which is no greater than the maximum diameter of said hole making means whereby said thread making means can enter said hole made by said hole making means in said imperforate surface of said solid portion of said workpiece without interference with said wall of said hole to thereafter form a thread in said wall.
- 27. In combination with a machine tool of the type having a spindle adapted to simultaneously rotate a cutting tool about its axis and feed said cutting tool axially for cutting a hole in an imperforate surface of a solid portion of a workpiece and thereafter concurrently move said axis in an orbital path and axially whereby a point on said cutting tool defines a helical path, the improvement comprising a hole making and threading tool having:
- an elongated straight body having a shank at one end; a hole making means at the other end for making said hole in said imperforate surface of said solid portion of said workpiece, said hole having a wall; and a thread making means intermediate said one end and said other end;
- at least one chip removal passage extending from said hole making means through said thread making means, said at least one chip removal passage comprising at least one spiral flute; and
- said thread making means having a maximum diameter which is no greater than the maximum diameter of said hole making means whereby said thread making means can enter said hole made by said hole making means in said imperforate surface of said solid portion of said workpiece without interference with said wall of said hole to thereafter form a thread in said wall.
- 28. The combination as claimed in claim 26 or 27 wherein said hole making means comprises a drill point and said thread making means comprises a thread-form mill.
- 29. The combination as claimed in claim 28 wherein said drill point is a hollow drill point.
- 30. The combination as claimed in claim 24 further comprising means for moving said end mill along said axis such that said end mill forms a hole in said imperforate surface of said solid portion of said workpiece; and means for moving said tool axially along said axis of said tool concurrently with moving said axis in an orbital path such that as said tool moves axially and orbitally helical threads are formed in said hole.
- 31. The combination as claimed in claim 29 further comprising means for moving said hole making means along said axis of rotation such that said hole making means forms a hole in said imperforate surface of said solid portion of said workpiece; means for rotating said tool; and means for concurrently moving said tool axially along said axis of rotation and orbitally around said axis of rotation such that as said tool moves axially and orbitally helical threads are formed in said hole.
- 32. The combination as claimed in claim 24 further comprising means for moving said hole making means along said axis such that said hole making means forms a hole in said imperforate surface of said solid portion of said workpiece; and means for moving said tool axially along said axis of said tool concurrently with moving said axis in an orbital path such that as said tool moves axially and orbitally helical threads are formed in said hole.
- 33. The combination as claimed in claim 25 further comprising means for moving said hole making means along said axis such that said hole making means forms a hole in said imperforate surface of said solid portion of said workpiece; and means for moving said tool axially along said axis of said tool concurrently with moving said axis in an orbital path such that as said tool moves axially and orbitally helical threads are formed in said hole.
- 34. The combination as claimed in claim 26 further comprising means for moving said hole making means along said axis such that said hole making means forms a hole in said imperforate surface of said solid portion of said workpiece; and means for moving said tool axially along said axis of said tool concurrently with moving said axis in an orbital path such that as said tool moves axially and orbitally helical threads are formed in said hole.
- 35. The combination as claimed in claim 27 further comprising means for moving said hole making means along said axis such that said hole making means forms a hole in said imperforate surface of said solid portion of said workpiece; and means for moving said tool axially along said axis of said tool concurrently with moving said axis in an orbital path such that as said tool moves axially and orbitally helical threads are formed in said hole.
- 36. The method as claimed in claim 16, wherein said chamfer cutting means is a chamfer cutting bit.
