- (c) a trigger member substantially covering said opening and being at least partially positioned within said opening, said trigger member attached to said sidewall of said shield by a hinge, said trigger member being pivotally movable about said hinge from a rest position where said trigger member lies flush with said sidewall of said shield and with said opening to an inward position where said trigger member extends into the interior of said shield, said trigger member being shaped so that when said trigger member is in said inward position said trigger member at least partially projects inwardly from said distal portion of said shield to limit access to said needle through said distal end of said shield.
- 10. The combination of claim 9, wherein said shield includes an inwardly directed key longitudinally extending therealong on the inner surface thereof; and
- a collar attached to said distal end of said barrel wherein said collar includes a keyway thereon for the movement of said key therethrough as said shield is moved between said retracted and extended positions.
- 11. The combination of claim 9 wherein a portion of said trigger member lies generally flush with said sidewall of said shield when said trigger member is in said inward position.
- 12. The combination of claim 9 wherein said shield includes locking means thereon to retain said trigger member in said inward position.
- 13. In combination,
- (a) a syringe comprising a barrel having distal and proximal ends, a plunger slidable within the barrel, and a needle attached adjacent to the distal end of the barrel
- (b) a collar operatively associated with said distal end of said barrel and including a key thereon which radially projects outwardly from the outer surface of said collar
- (c) an elongated needle shield movable over said barrel and said collar between a retracted position in which said needle is exposed and an extended position wherein said shield protects said needle, said shield including a channel disposed along the inner surface thereof which slidably contacts said key member and further includes a locking tab having a locking edge thereon wherein said locking tab is movable between a first position wherein said locking edge is adjacent said inner surface of said shield and a second position wherein said locking edge extends inwardly from said inner surface of said shield to engage said collar.
- 14. The combination of claim 13 wherein said channel further includes a positioning means extending therein to selectively engage said key to prevent longitudinal movement of said key in said channel when said locking edge of said locking tab engages said collar.
- 15. The combination of claim 13 wherein said locking edge is manually pivotable to said second position when said shield is in said extended position.
- 16. The combination of claim 13 wherein movement of said locking edge to said second position is prevented when said shield is in said retracted position.
- 17. A needle shielding device for use with a barrel having proximal and distal ends, wherein a needle may be attached to the distal end of the barrel member, the improvement comprising:
- shield retaining means operatively associated with the barrel and including an outer surface thereon;
- a tubular needle shield longitudinally movable over the barrel and said shield retaining means between a retracted position wherein the needle is exposed and an extended position wherein the needle is protected by said shield and wherein said shield includes an inner surface and sidewall and distal and proximal portions;
- movement limiting means on said shield wherein said movement limiting means is movable between a first position wherein a first portion of said movement limiting means is aligned with said sidewall of said shield and a second position wherein said first portion of said movement limiting means extends inwardly from said sidewall of said shield, and wherein movement of said shield to said retracted position is prevented when said movement limiting means is in said second position.
