Claims
- 1. A method for communicating errors to a head end of a telecommunications system, comprising:monitoring a downstream transmission channel at a service unit for transmission errors; generating a signal at the service unit that indicates errors in the downstream transmission; transmitting the signal to the head end on an associated upstream communication channel; and wherein generating a signal at the service unit that indicates errors comprises corrupting the parity bit for the upstream channel.
- 2. A communication system, comprising,a head end terminal; at least one service unit; a distribution network, coupled between the head end terminal and the at least one service unit; wherein the at least one service unit monitors a downstream transmission channel for transmission errors, when errors are detected the at least one service unit generates a signal that indicates errors in the downstream transmission and transmits the signal to the head end terminal on an associated upstream communication signal; and wherein the at least one service unit further samples the parity bit of each n-bit word of the downstream transmission channel, counts a number of parity errors detected in sampling the parity bit of each n-bit word, and determines a probable bit error rate for the channel from the counted number of parity errors.
- 3. A communication system, a head end terminal;at least one service unit; a distribution network, coupled between the head end terminal and the at least one service unit; wherein the at least one service unit monitors a downstream transmission channel for transmission errors, when errors are detected the at least one service unit generates a signal that indicates errors in the downstream transmission and transmits the signal to the head end terminal on an associated upstream communication signal; and wherein the at least one service unit further corrupts the parity bit for the upstream channel to indicate errors in the downstream transmission.
- 4. A communication system, comprising:a distribution network; a head end terminal adapted to transmit downstream control and telephony data in a first frequency bandwidth over the distribution network and adapted to receive upstream telephony and control data in a second frequency bandwidth over the distribution network; at least one service unit operatively connected to the distribution network for upstream transmission of the upstream telephony and control data in the second frequency bandwidth and for receipt of the downstream control and telephony data in the first frequency bandwidth; wherein the at least one service unit monitors a downstream transmission channel for transmission errors, when errors are detected the at least one service unit generates a signal that indicates errors in the downstream transmission and transmits the signal to the head end terminal on an associated upstream communication signal; and wherein the at least one service unit further samples the parity bit of each n-bit word of the downstream transmission channel, counts a number of parity errors detected in sampling the parity bit of each n-bit word, and determines a probable bit error rate for the channel from the counted number of parity errors.
- 5. A communication system, comprising:a distribution network; a head end terminal adapted to transmit downstream control and telephony data in a first frequency bandwidth over the distribution network and adapted to receive upstream telephony and control data in a second frequency bandwidth over the distribution network; at least one service unit operatively connected to the distribution network for upstream transmission of the upstream telephony and control data in the second frequency bandwidth and for receipt of the downstream control and telephony data in the first frequency bandwidth; wherein the at least one service unit monitors a downstream transmission channel for transmission errors, when errors are detected the at least one service unit generates a signal that indicates errors in the downstream transmission and transmits the signal to the head end terminal on an associated upstream communication signal; and wherein the at least one service unit further corrupts the parity bit for the upstream communication channel to indicate errors in the downstream transmission.
- 6. The method of claim 1, wherein monitoring a downstream transmission comprises determining a probable bit error rate for the channel from a parity bit of the transmission channel.
