Claims
- 1. A portable communication device for communicating with an electronic price label (EPL) computer utilizing existing EPL communication system infrastructure by reflectively modulating signals received from the EPL computer, the portable communication device comprising:a control processor; a data entry mechanism coupled to the control processor for user input; and communication circuitry internal to the portal communication device to transmit data to the EPL computer utilizing EPL communication system infrastructure external to the portable communication device, the communication circuitry reflectively modulating signals received from the EPL computer and transmitted by the EPL communication system infrastructure, said EPL communication system infrastructure also being utilized by the EPL computer to communicate with EPLs.
- 2. The portable communication device of claim 1 wherein the communication circuitry further comprises handshake communication circuitry which transfers commands to the EPL computer and receives acknowledgements from the EPL computer.
- 3. The portable communication device of claim 1 wherein the communication circuitry further comprises at least a first send switch whose state is polled by the EPL computer to initiate data communication.
- 4. The portable communication device of claim 1 wherein the communication circuitry further comprises at least a first receive switch which receives an acknowledgment signal from the EPL computer.
- 5. The portable communication device of claim 1 wherein the communication circuitry further comprises:at least one data switch for transmitting the data to the EPL computer, the at least one data switch including a first portion and a second portion which transmit data by either acknowledging or not acknowledging a polling message from the EPL computer.
- 6. The portable communication device of claim 1 wherein the EPL computer communicates with a plurality of EPLs operating within a predetermined frequency range; andwherein the portable communication device operates within the predetermined frequency range to transmit data to the EPL computer.
- 7. The portable communication device of claim 1 wherein the communication circuitry is identified by at least one unique EPL identification number.
- 8. The portable communication device of claim 1 wherein the communication device is handheld and portable.
- 9. The portable communication device of claim 1 wherein the data transmitted to the EPL computer includes a function to be executed by the EPL computer from a list of functions maintained by the EPL computer.
- 10. The portable communication device of claim 9 wherein the function to be executed includes a command to begin a promotion of an item.
- 11. The portable communication device of claim 9 wherein the function to be executed includes a command to begin a diagnostic test.
- 12. The portable communication device of claim 9 wherein the function to be executed includes a command to change a displayed price of an item.
- 13. The portable communication device of claim 1 wherein the EPL computer includes an EPL data file which stores EPL identification information and communication circuitry status information.
- 14. The portable communication device of claim 1 wherein the data transmitted to the EPL computer by the communication device allows an operator of the communication device to remotely control the EPL computer.
- 15. An electronic price label (EPL) system comprising:a plurality of EPLs, each of the plurality of EPLs identified by a unique EPL identifier; a remote control device comprising a control processor, a data entry mechanism coupled to the control processor for user input, communication circuitry coupled to the control processor for transmitting and receiving data; and a computer which transmits data, utilizing EPL communication system infrastructure, to the plurality of EPLs and the remote control device, and receives data from the communication device utilizing said EPL communication system infrastructure; wherein the remote control device transmits data to the computer by reflectively modulating signals received from the computer.
- 16. The system of claim 15 wherein the remote control device is identified by at least one EPL identification number.
