- 3. The interface circuit of any one of claims 1 or 2 wherein the communication line is a transmit line and the predetermined characteristic of the communication line comprises a load on the communication line.
- 4. The interface circuit of claim 1 wherein the predetermined characteristic of the communication line comprises a communication line signal of a predetermined signal characteristic.
- 5. The interface circuit of claim 4 wherein the predetermined signal characteristic is a signal which does not dwell in a limited voltage range around ground voltage.
- 6. The interface circuit of claim 4 wherein the predetermined signal characteristic is a signal which frequently transitions between signal states.
- 7. The interface circuit of either of claims 4, 5 or 6 wherein the first circuit is a circuit for connection to a receive communication line.
- 8. The interface circuit of claim 1 further comprised of a third circuit coupled to the first circuit and the second circuit, the third circuit detecting a change in level of a transmitter signal, the second circuit also responding to the transmitter signal to provide the control signal indicative of the detection or lack of detection of either the predetermined characteristic of the communication line or a change in level of the transmitter signal.
- 9. An interface circuit for connection to standard communication lines comprising:
- a first circuit including a line driver for connection to a communication line, the first circuit being a circuit for detecting the presence or absence of a load on the line driver when the line driver is powered on; and,
- a second circuit coupled to the first circuit, the second circuit providing a control signal indicative of the presence or absence of a load on the line driver and turning off the line driver upon the detection of the absence of the load on the line driver.
- 10. The interface circuit of claim 9 further comprised of a third circuit for periodically turning on the line driver when the line driver is otherwise off in order to update the control signal if the presence or absence of the load has changed.
- 11. A method comprising the steps of:
- (a) monitoring a communication line connection to detect a presence or absence of a predetermined characteristic of a communication line connected to the communication line connection;
- (b) providing a control signal indicative of the detection or lack of detection of the predetermined characteristic of the communication line;
- (c) deactivating associated circuitry to reduce cower consumption thereof responsive to the lack of detection of the predetermined characteristic of the communication line; and
- (d) reactivating the associated circuitry at a selected periodic rate to again attempt to detect the predetermined characteristic of the communication line.
- 12. The method of claim 11 wherein the communication line is a transmit line and the predetermined characteristic of the communication line comprises an impedance indicative of a load on the communication line.
- 13. The method of claim 11 wherein the predetermined characteristic of the communication line comprises a communication line signal of a predetermined signal characteristic.
- 14. The method of claim 13 wherein the predetermined signal characteristic is a signal which does not dwell in a limited voltage range around ground voltage.
- 15. The method of claim 13 wherein the predetermined signal characteristic is a signal which frequently transitions between signal states.
- 16. The method of any one of claims 13, 14 or 15 wherein step (a) monitors a communication line connection for connecting to a receive communication line.
- 17. The method of claim 11 further comprised of the step of detecting a change in level of a transmitter signal, and wherein step (b) comprises the step of providing a control signal indicative of the detection of either the predetermined characteristic of a communication line or a change in level of a transmitter signal.
- 18. A method of monitoring a connection for connecting to a standard communication line comprising the steps of:
- (a) monitoring a line driver coupled to the connection to detect the presence or absence of a load on the line driver when the line driver is powered on;
- (b) providing a control signal indicative of the presence or absence of a load on the line driver; and
- (c) updating the control signal by periodically placing the line driver from a powered off state to a powered on state.
- 19. The method of claim 18, wherein prior to step (c), the method further comprised of the step of turning off the line driver upon the detection of the absence of the load on the line driver.
