Claims
- 1. In an occupant protection system of the type comprising a first crash sensor for sensing a vehicular crash and thereupon completing an electrical firing circuit; the improvement comprising,
- said first crash sensor incorporating resistance sensing means for determining if the resistance of said electrical firing circuit is between predetermined limits.
- 2. The invention as defined by claim 1 including a second crash sensor connected in parallel with said first crash sensor.
- 3. The invention as defined by claim 1 including means adapted for communicating information about the condition of said electrical firing circuit by transmitting electrical signals on a conductor of said electrical firing circuit.
- 4. The invention as defined by claim 1 wherein said resistance sensing means periodically applies substantially the full voltage supplied it by the vehicle electrical system to said electrical firing circuit and measures the resistance of said electrical firing circuit while applying said full voltage.
- 5. The invention as defined by claim 4 including means adapted for communicating information about the condition of said electrical firing circuit by transmitting electrical signals on a conductor of said electrical firing circuit.
- 6. The invention as defined by claim 5 wherein said means adapted for communicating information comprises means for controlling the timing of said application of said full voltage to said electrical firing circuit.
- 7. In an occupant protection system of the type including a first crash sensing means adapted for closing a first switch upon sensing a crash and also including a second crash sensing means adapted for closing a second switch upon sensing a crash for initiating deployment of occupant protection equipment, said first and said second switches being connected in series so that both of said switches must be closed to initiate deployment of said occupant protection equipment, the improvement comprising:
- electrical resistance means connected in parallel with one of said switches and adapted to cease conducting electricity when voltage is applied to it for more than a predetermined time period, and
- means responsive to a malfunction in said system for applying said voltage to said electrical resistance means for more than said predetermined time period.
- 8. The invention as defined by claim 7 wherein said brief time is between 0.01 second and 1000 seconds in duration.
- 9. An occupant protection system for a vehicle of the type comprising a first crash sensor for sensing a crash of said vehicle, said first crash sensor being connected with other elements of said occupant protection system by exactly two electrical conductors wherein:
- said first crash sensor includes means for detecting a fault in said occupant protection system, and
- means for transmitting information about said fault to another element of said occupant protection system by broadcasting said information on one of said two electrical conductors.
- 10. The invention as defined by claim 9 wherein said two electrical conductors provide a constant direct current voltage to said first crash sensor and said means for transmitting information comprises means for adding an intermittent voltage to said direct current voltage.
- 11. The invention as defined by claim 9 wherein said means for detecting a fault in said occupant protection system comprises resistance sensing means.
- 12. The invention as defined by claim 9 wherein said resistance sensing means periodically reduces said direct current voltage provided to said first crash sensor to near zero voltage and said resistance sensing means senses resistance while said direct current voltage is approximately zero.
- 13. The invention as defined by claim 9 including a second crash sensor connected in series with said first crash sensor.
- 14. The invention as defined by claim 9 wherein one of said conductors is the metal structure of the vehicle.
- 15. The invention as defined by claim 9 and including a diagnostic circuit for interpreting said transmitted information about said fault.
- 16. The invention as defined by claim 10 including an operator warning lamp and wherein said diagnostic circuit turns on said operator warning lamp upon receipt of certain transmitted information and not upon receipt of different transmitted information.
