Claims
- 1. A television system which uses a standard television channel bandwidth for transmitting and receiving an extended definition television broadcast signal comprising:
- a) means for producing a television signal having a first picture with a first aspect ratio and at least one horizontal border comprising enhancement information and disposed adjacent to said first picture to produce a second picture with a second aspect ratio which is lower than said first aspect ratio;
- b) means for transmitting said television signal so that a standard television receiver will receive and display said second picture;
- c) receiving means for receiving said television signal and further comprising:
- i. display means for displaying a television image having said first aspect ratio;
- ii. means for combining said first picture with said enhancement signals so as to form an enhanced picture having said first aspect ratio and a higher vertical resolution than said first picture; and
- iii. means for displaying said enhanced picture on said display means
- wherein said first picture is composed of a plurality of sets of scan lines and wherein said receiving means further comprises:
- input means for producing an output picture signal comprising for each of said sets of scan lines, one null scan line; and
- output means for receiving said output picture signal from said input means and for producing sets of output lines that are each weighted combinations of a set of scan lines and a null scan line.
- 2. The system of claim 1 wherein said output means produces four output lines comprised of Y, 3/4Y+1/4X, 1/2Y+1/2Z, and 3/4Z+1/4X where X, Y and Z are three scan lines produced by said input means and received by said output means.
- 3. An extended definition television system which uses a standard television channel bandwidth wherein there is a means for transmitting a broadcast signal with an in-phase component and a quadrature component and a receiving means for receiving said broadcast signal, said system comprising:
- means for producing a source image having a picture and a border, said picture having a particular aspect ratio and said border being of a size to give said source image an aspect ratio compatible with a standard television broadcast;
- means for progressively scanning said source image to produce a scanned image, said scanned image comprising a plurality of horizontally scanned video lines;
- means for selecting alternate horizontally scanned video lines to produce a main scan signal having a picture and a border;
- a differential circuit for producing a differential scan signal corresponding to a difference between every other video line and at least one adjacent video line;
- means for inserting a first part of said differential scan signal into said border of said main scan signal producing a modified scan signal;
- a quadrature modulator for modulating a second part of said differential scan signal onto said quadrature component of said broadcast signal;
- an in-phase modulator for modulating said modified scan signal onto said in-phase component of said broadcast signal;
- a quadrature demodulator in the receiving means for demodulating said quadrature component of said broadcast signal producing said second part of said differential scan signal;
- means for extracting said first part of said differential scan signal from said border of said modified main scan signal reproducing said main scan signal and said first part of said differential scan signal;
- means for combining said first part with said second part of said differential scan signal reproducing said differential scan signal;
- means for reconstructing said scanned image from said main scan signal and said differential scan signal to produce a display image having said particular aspect ratio; and
- a display device for displaying said display image.
- 4. The system of claim 3 further comprising:
- a motion detector for producing a motion signal to indicate motion in said picture; and
- means for blanking said inserting means when the motion signal indicates motion in the picture.
- 5. The system of claim 3 wherein said differential circuit generates a difference between an average signal of two video lines separated by one video line and said one video line.
- 6. A method for generating an encoded television signal adapted to generate a first display on a standard television receiver and an enhanced display on a non-standard receiver, comprising the steps of:
- generating a source image signal having a picture signal defining a picture having a predetermined aspect ratio and a border signal defining a boarder, said picture signal and said border signal comprising a plurality of horizontal video line signals;
- selecting alternate ones of said horizontal video line signals, thereby generating a main scan signal having a main picture signal and a main border signal;
- generating an enhancement signal in response to selected ones of said horizontal line signals;
- combining a first part of said enhancement signal with said main border signal, thereby producing a modified scan signal;
- generating a carrier signal;
- modulating said modified scan signal onto said carrier signal;
- and modulating a second part of said enhancement signal onto said carrier signal in quadrature with said modified scan signal, thereby generating said encoded television signal.
- 7. A method as set forth in claim 6, further comprising the steps of:
- generating a masking signal; and
- combining said masking signal and said border signal, thereby producing a combined border signal.
- 8. Apparatus for decoding a received television signal comprising a first picture having a standard aspect ratio and comprising a contiguous second picture having a wide aspect ratio, said signal having an in-phase component and a quadrature component, said apparatus comprising:
- in-phase demodulator means for demodulating said in-phase component of said received television signal, thereby reproducing a modified scan signal having a picture signal with said wide aspect ratio, a horizontal border signal and a first part of an enhancement signal;
- quadrature demodulator means for demodulating said quadrature component of said received television signal, thereby reproducing a second part of said enhancement signal;
- means for separating said first part of said enhancement signal from said horizontal border signal;
- means for combining said first part of said enhancement signal with said second part of said enhancement signal, thereby reproducing a combined enhancement signal;
- means for combining said picture signal with said combined enhancement signal thereby generating an enhanced picture signal.
- 9. Apparatus for decoding a television signal having a first aspect ratio and having border signals defining a border, first picture signals defining a first picture having a second aspect ratio which is wider than said first aspect ratio adjacent said border, enhancement signals combined with said border signals, and a masking signal combined with said border signals, said apparatus comprising:
- separating means for separating said enhancement signals from said border signals; and
- means for combining said first picture signals with said enhancement signals to provide an enhanced television picture.
- 10. A television system for transmitting and receiving an extended definition television signal, comprising:
- a) means for producing a television signal having a picture and at least one horizontal border disposed adjacent to said picture to produce an overall image, said producing means comprising means for scanning said overall image to produce a scanned image of scanned video lines and means for producing a first signal having a border portion and a picture portion and comprising selected scanned video lines, and a second signal having a border portion and a picture portion and corresponding to the remaining video lines;
- b) coding means for coding the border of the first signal with information from the picture portion of the second signal to produce a coded first signal and for coding the border of the second signal with information from the picture portion of the second signal to produce a coded second signal, said coding means providing a coded television signal;
- c) means for transmitting said coded television signal; and
- d) receiving means for receiving the coded television signal, further comprising:
- (i) display means having a screen for displaying a television image;
- (ii) decoding means for decoding a coded television signal to produce picture information and extended picture information; and
- (iii) means for displaying said picture information and said extended picture information on said screen as part of a single picture.
- 11. The system of claim 10 wherein the picture portion of the second signal has luminance and color portions and wherein said coding means further comprises:
- means for band filtering the luminance and color portions of the second signal picture to produce at least high pass and low pass luminance portions and low pass color portions;
- means for coding the border of the first signal with the high pass luminance portion of the second signal to produce the coded first signal; and
- means for coding the border of the second signal with the low pass color portion of the second signal and for coding the picture portion of the second signal with the low pass luminance portion of the second signal to produce the coded second signal.
- 12. The system of claim 10 wherein the picture portion of the second signal has luminance and color portions and wherein said coding means further comprises:
- means for band filtering the luminance portion of the second signal picture portion to produce a low pass luminance portion; and wherein said transmitting means further comprises:
- means for producing a carrier signal;
- means for modulating an in-phase portion of the carrier signal with said first signal;
- means for modulating a quadrature portion of the carrier signal with said low pass luminance portion of said second signal; and wherein said receiving means further comprises:
- means for demodulating said in-phase portion of said carrier signal reproducing said first signal;
- means for demodulating said quadrature portion of said carrier signal reproducing said low pass luminance portion of said second signal and wherein said decoding means further comprises:
- means for combining said first signal and said low pass luminance portion of said second signal and said low pass luminance portion of said second signal to produce picture information.
