Claims
- 1. An electronic compass suitable for use in a vehicle,
- said electronic compass comprising first and second sensors responsive to an external magnetic field for developing first and second electronic sensor signals respectively representative of said external magnetic field, said external magnetic field being a combination of the earth magnetic field and a deviating field of the vehicle;
- said first and second sensors being oriented in a predetermined angular relation with each other and being aligned in a predetermined angular relation with respective axes of said vehicle;
- an electronic circuit for measuring said sensor signals for developing signals indicative of the direction of said vehicle; and
- a digital lag filter operating on said sensor signals to reduce the noise in said sensor signals.
- 2. The electronic compass of claim 1 wherein said digital lag filter has transfer function of the form:
- X.sub.f (t)=X.sub.f (t-1)+K*(X.sub.u (t)-X.sub.f (t-1)),
- where X.sub.f (t) is the filtered value at time (t), X.sub.f (t-1) is the filtered value at time (t-1), X.sub.u (t) is the unfiltered value at time (t), and where K has a numerical value less than 1.
- 3. The electronic compass of claim 2 wherein K has the form: ##EQU3## if initial deviation compensation of said electronic compass is being performed.
- 4. The electronic compass of claim 2 wherein K has the form: ##EQU4## if updating deviation compensation of said electronic compass is being performed.
- 5. The electronic compass of claim 1 further comprises an electronic display coupled with said electronic circuit for displaying said direction.
- 6. The electronic compass of claim 5 wherein said electronic display comprises an octant display representing one of the eight principal compass points.
- 7. The electronic compass of claim 6 further comprising display time dampening.
- 8. The electronic compass of claim 7 wherein said display time dampening prevents display of a new octant until display of an existing octant has persisted for a predetermined time duration.
- 9. The electronic compass of claim 8 wherein said time duration is at least 1.5 seconds.
- 10. An electronic compass suitable for use in a vehicle,
- said electronic compass comprising first and second sensors responsive to an external magnitude field for developing first and second electronic sensor signals respectively representative of said external magnetic field, said external magnetic field being a combination of the earth magnetic field and a deviating field of the vehicle;
- said first and second sensors being oriented in a predetermined angular relation with each other and being aligned in a predetermined angular relation with respective axes of said vehicle;
- an electronic circuit for measuring said sensor signals for developing signals indicative of the direction of said vehicle;
- a digital lag filter operating on said sensor signals to reduce the noise in said sensor signals;
- and an electronic display coupled with said electronic circuit for displaying said direction, said electronic display comprising an octant display representing one of the eight principal compass points and comprising display time dampening with progressive time dampening wherein said time dampening progressively increases in correspondence to the number of octants by which a new octant display differs from an existing octant display.
