Claims
- 1. A method for treating a patient by open surgery, comprising the steps of:
inserting a medical device into the patient, the medical device comprising an elongate instrument having a plurality of flexible lines and a plurality of struts arranged circumferentially around the instrument, each strut having an end that pivots away from the instrument, each flexible line having a proximal end and a distal end that passes slideably through and beyond the end of the strut that carries it and is attached to the strut immediately adjacent the strut that carries it; pushing the flexible lines distally to expand the struts radially outward; pulling the flexible lines proximally to contract the struts radially inward; and removing the medical device from the patient.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the medical device is inserted into the patient through an incision.
- 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the elongate instrument further comprises a filter mesh disposed over the struts and expandable by operation of the flexible lines, wherein during use the filter captures embolic material.
- 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the medical device is inserted into an artery of the patient.
- 5. The method of claim 4, wherein the artery is the aorta.
- 6. The method of claim 5, further comprising the steps of performing cardiopulmonary bypass.
- 7. The method of claim 5, further comprising the steps of performing valve repair surgery.
- 8. The method of claim 1, wherein the instrument is a cannula.
- 9. The method of claim 4, wherein the artery is a carotid artery.
- 10. The method of claim 9, further comprising the steps of performing carotid endarterectomy.
- 11. The method of claim 1, wherein one flexible line is carried by each strut, each flexible line has a proximal end and a distal end that slideably engages the end of the strut that carries it, the distal end of each line is attached to the strut immediately adjacent the strut that carries it, and each line passes proximally beyond the first end of the strut that carries it.
- 12. The method of claim 1, wherein each strut comprises a tubular member having a lumen and each flexible line is carried by the lumen of each tubular strut.
- 13. The method of claim 1, wherein the second end of each strut curves toward the immediately adjacent strut.
- 14. The method of claim 1, wherein the flexible lines comprise pull wires.
- 15. The method of claim 1, wherein the elongate instrument comprises a blood filtration cannula.
- 16. The method of claim 1, wherein the catheter further comprises a balloon occluder.
- 17. The method of claim 1, wherein the balloon occluder is mounted proximal the struts.
- 18. The method of claim 1, wherein the medical device is inserted into a vein of the patient.
- 19. The method of claim 4, wherein the flexible lines are pushed distally until the operator is able to feel that the ends of the struts have made contact with the endoluminal surface of the artery.
- 20. The method of claim 6, wherein the elongate instrument has a lumen that extends between a proximal end and a distal end, and wherein the method further comprises the step of infusing blood through the lumen.
