Claims
- 1. A catalyst component for the polymerization of olefins, comprising a magnesium halide in active form, and, supported thereon, a titanium halide or titanium halogen alcoholate and diamine of formula ##STR4## wherein the radicals R.sub.1 to R.sub.10 are the same or different and are hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.18 linear or branched alkyl radicals, C.sub.3 -C.sub.18 cycloalkyl radicals, C.sub.6 -C.sub.18 aryl radicals, C.sub.7 -C.sub.18 alkaryl or aralkyl radicals, with the proviso that at least one of the R.sub.7 and R.sub.8 radicals and at least one of the R.sub.9 and R.sub.10 radicals are not hydrogen, and wherein at least one of the R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 radicals is selected from the group consisting of methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, isobutyl, sec-butyl, tert-butyl, cyclohexyl, cyclohexenyl, cyclohexylmethyl, phenyl and benzyl.
- 2. The catalyst component of claim 1, wherein the radicals R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, isobutyl, sec-butyl, tert-butyl, cyclohexyl, cyclohexenyl, cyclohexylmethyl, phenyl and benzyl.
- 3. The catalyst component of claim 1, wherein the radicals R.sub.7 to R.sub.10 are selected from the group consisting of C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyls and C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 cycloalkyls.
- 4. The catalyst component of claim 1, wherein the magnesium halide is MgCl.sub.2 and the titanium halide is TiCl.sub.4.
- 5. A catalyst for the polymerization of olefins comprising the reaction product of:
- A) a catalyst component as defined in claim 1;
- B) an Al-alkyl compound; and optionally
- C) an electron donor compound.
- 6. The catalyst of claim 5, wherein the Al-alkyl compound (B) is an Al-trialkyl compound.
- 7. The catalyst of claim 5, wherein the electron-donor compound (C) is selected from the compounds of formula:
- R.sub.m SiY.sub.n X.sub.p
- wherein:
- R is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 alkyl, C.sub.2 -C.sub.20 alkenyl, C.sub.6 -C.sub.20 aryl, C.sub.7 -C.sub.20 aralkyl, or C.sub.3 -C.sub.20 cycloalkyl;
- Y is an --OR', --OCOR', --NR'.sub.2 radical wherein R' is the same or different from R and has the same meaning as R;
- X is a halogen or hydrogen atom or an --OCOR" or --NR".sub.2 group, wherein R" is the same or different from R', and has the same meaning as R'; m is a number from 0 to 3, n is a number from 1 to 4, p is a number from 0 to 1 and m+n+p is equal to 4.
- 8. A catalyst for the polymerization of olefins comprising the product of the reaction of an Al-alkyl compound and a diamine of the formula of claim 1 with a solid component comprising a magnesium halide in active form, a titanium halide or titanium halogen alcoholate, and an electron-donor compound extractable with Al-triethyl for at least 70% in moles under standard extraction conditions, said solid component having a surface area greater than 20 m.sup.2 /g after extraction.
- 9. The catalyst of claim 8 wherein the electron-donor compound present in the solid component is a phthalic acid ester.
